Volkswagen Touran MPV (2003 - ) - Is 55k worth £2k? 3 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Looking at VW Tourans with the 2.0 TDI PD. The two leading contenders with the desired spec and colors are priced at £10k and £12k, with the former having 85k miles and the latter 30k. Both are single owner, FVWSH vehicles. The high miler is a trade in at a LR Stratstone franchise, and the lower one is at a VW main dealer, where it was originally bought and sold. -
Renault Scenic (1996 - 1998) - 1998 1.6 - misfire 17 Oct 2007 (Forum)
this started after the car went in for a service; the car seemed to be missing as I drove away. The mechanic said that there was a plug lead not fitted properly and all was OK until now (a few months ago)........the car starts and runs fine but after a normal run if I have to stop for a short time the car then misfires, as if its not running on all cylinders,,,,it smooth no pops or bangs but it only happens under the situation above, I was wondering if there could be a faulty plug fitted that was failing under high temperature..any ideas. -
Daewoo Lanos (1997 - 2002 ) - 98 1.6 Non-starter 3 Oct 2007 (Forum)
My daughter has a 1998 1.6sx which refuses to start - was going OK, but now isn't. Starter motor turns, camshafts move (so timing belt intact), checked HT leads for spark, disconnected fuel line, and petrol P's out when engine turns so pump etc OK (and yes it's petrol). Could it be the immobiliser cutting something else out that I haven't checked? If so how can I check? -
Ford C-MAX (2003 - 2010) - Vredestein tyres, recommended? 7 Sep 2007 (Forum)
The supplier said the contis were good, but Vredestein were better and cheaper. I'd never heard of the make before, but they're high rated by a leading car magazine. Anyone on here used that brand of tyre? -
2-stroke appreciation 31 Aug 2007 (Forum)
That's appreciation in both senses, as I have just discovered that new EU regs (groan) in force this year mean that new 2-stroke outboard motors cannot be sold any more, with the result that second-hand ones are holding their value rather well. I know this because I've just bought one, which leads me to a more motoring-related question: we've just had a bank holiday influx of scooterists, some of whose machines seemed to be burning something that smelled very like Castrol R. Any ideas what it could have been? -
Peugeot 406 (1996 - 1998) - Scoping the dwell on coil packs 21 Aug 2007 (Forum)
My friend has a bosch diagnostics terminal (smallish hand held green box of tricks that plugs into most cars about the size of a closed newspaper), this has a scope function and has 2 leads that plug in for the 'multimeter' functions it does. Guessing one is live and the other is negative. But no idea where to stick the wires etc. -
Jetski idiots on flooded roads. 9 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I saw a news item about people careering through flooded Gloucestershire on jetskis, intimidating people and in one case leading to a confrontation. It set me wondering about the legal status of jetskis on a flooded road. Clearly responsible use of a motor boat in a flood is acceptable and probably nobody even gives any thought to its legal status. -
The best way to dispose of...... 15 Jun 2007 (Forum)
SWMBO brother has left the country, but he has left behind a Triumph Spitfire (1300 with O/D I believe) in a lockup. He was in the process of restoring it before jetting off for pastures new. I am lead to believe that it is in pieces rather then complete and running, although the engine and gearbox are runners and the panels are all done!!!! The FIL and I are going to have a look at it in a couple of weeks time, but I am really after ideas of how to dispose of it. -
Pug 106 Uneven Tickover 3 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Hi My 1998 1.4 petrol (distributorless ignition and injection) 106's head gasket went a while ago. Had the head skimmed and new gasket. Also replaced Lambda sensor, plugs and HT leads. Am now experiencing an uneven tickover, seems worse when engine is hot and I sometimes think it misses a little at slow speeds around town. Any ideas what this could be? It recently passed its MOT so emissions seem to be ok (they are not adjustable anyway as the computer chip controls all the settings?) -
Daewoo 9 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The air inlet conduit is the large black flexi rubber tube about 80mm diameter. The Nexia has 2 plastic chambers leading off this conduit which don't go anywhere, or do anything, they are just empty boxes of plastic. The Nubira has something similar. What on Earth are these for? It seems Daewoo likes using them on their cars, I have never seen anything like them on any other car. -
crash-worthiness of pre-1997 cars 20 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I was struck by just how much improvement there has been in scores over the past 10 years - absolutely amazing that just 9 years ago a 3-series could be getting only two stars. My question is - how much did the crash-worthiness of cars improve in the (say) 30 years leading up to the establishment of NCAP. Were cars from the early 1990s at much the same level as cars from the 1960s, or had there been a significant over those years? -
ford 6000 external audio input 7 May 2006 (Forum)
I take it therefore, that this unit is capable of taking input from an external audio source. I know there's those FM transmitter things, but I was thinking of a simple lead from the back of the unit, ending in a standard 3.5mm audio plug. I have a set of prongs and I've popped the unit out from the fascia, but theres no specific markings on the back. Any ideas how I'd go about this ? -
Digital Tyre Pressure Gauges 18 Feb 2006 (Forum)
My motorcycle in particular is checked quite often as wrong pressures in its tyres could cause handling problems, which could in turn lead to more serious consequences. I have a couple of pencil type gauges, and have a cheap thing attached to the air line of my compressor. All read differently. I have read somewhere, that digital i.e electronic is the way to go. -
New VW Passat 9 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Hello, leading high street car mag describes New Passat as the best all round medium sized family car. What do fello back roomers think. My mate who works for a very large London based VW outfit regards VW products as expensive and overrated, hehimself drives a Toyota. -
Battery Advice 27 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I once sold a car to a chap (having previously warned him the battery was u/s) and when he came to pick it up, he had a spare battery and jump lead with him which he used to start it (without touching the installed one). Is there any point carrying a spare battery like that? Risks? I've also heard modern car electronics can be blown up with a jump start. -
1995 Ford TD Factory immobiliser/central 26 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Problem with the immobiliser/central locking fitted to my 1995 Escort TD. Whilst welding on a sill, I fried the electrics that lead to the NSR door, wires run up the 'B' piller and into rear door. The electrics power the central locking fitted to that door. I have replaced all the wires with a same age car with parts from the scrappies. -
Truvelo lines 3 Feb 2005 (Forum)
There is a Truvelo camera on the A56 leading into Manchester, on a slight downwards hill. Its sited just beyond a Fire Station on the opposite side of the road. Thing is, there are only three narrow white lines across the carriageway no more than 1ft apart. -
location of Clio coolant temp sensor 25 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I have a 2002 1.4 16V clio this is exhibiting all the problems that I have read about elsewhere in this forum which are resolved by replacing the coolant temperature sensor - namely uneven running for the first few minutes when the engine is totally cold, but thereafter all is well until the engine cools down overnight. But - where do I find this sensor - what colour are the leads connected to it? I have a Haynes manual covering all models up to 2001, but the layout for this newer engine has changed enough to make this manual useless. -
Seat Inca 1.9SDi glow plugs - where? 25 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Where are the glow plugs located on the Inca? How do I fault find them - stick a clampmeter on each of the pre-heater leads? If it is a glow plug fault would continuing driving it create bigger problems? I think it is quite near a service interval it is approx 23000 miles. Thanks, Frank -
Am i being silly- buying a E34 530 V8? 6 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I have seen a few last of the line 530 V8's advertised and selling for around £3k. These cars have the M60 Nikasil lined V8, which can lead to bore wear. How much of a concern should this be when contemplating a purchase? Will all those likely to fail have done so by now, and are problem cars easy to spot-how? I onlt intend to keep for about 6 months if i buy, and wondered what people here thought about the idea.
