  • Q Car Advice 12 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Thought I would cut my BR teeth by asking a question I couldn't see info for - namely advice on buying a Q Car. Ten years ago a Volvo T5 or dare I say it a Rover 620ti would have fit the bill, namely reasonably swift, understated (in comparison to an Impreza or an Evo), and not a body kitted version of an existing model (like a Mondeo S200 type).
  • S40 vs. C5 vs. Mercedes C Class 29 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Although I love the car, due to personal reasons, it is for sale now and would be grateful if you could let me know what would be a realistic price for a quick sale either from a dealer (Mercedes or third party?) or private sale. In its place, I am thinking of getting either the new Volvo S40 saloon or Citroen C5 HDi Exclusive or a secondhand Mercedes C or E class with a budget of £12,000. What would you suggest is the best option?
  • Car advice needed please 18 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Car is needed for short journeys to the station , town, and as I have to drive to work 5 days a month 5 x 150 mile round trips to London (clear run on the way in, traffic on the way out) And the occasional trips away whan I have time off. I'm currently driving an old Volvo 360- which on the London run costs £17 for the round trip. Before this I had an Astra diesel which would do that journey on about £10. I'd like to get closer to the £10 but would rather not be in something as slow as the astra.
  • 940 B200FT cutting out 17 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Friend has a 1992 volvo 940 B200FT. It keeps cutting out. The OBD 1 diagnostic unit causes the lambda light to come on and reports fault codes 1-4-4 (fault in or to bosch LH2.4 ecu). He has had a mobile tuning firm out and they suggested replacing the fuel pump relay (a common fault on these cars), this had no effect.
  • Vauxhall Omega reliable?? 3 Sep 2002 (Forum)
However, on looking around for a replacement, it struck me that Omegas are cheap relative to the "prestige" competition (Volvo V70, Audi A6 Avant, BWW 5 series Touring). I was very surprised to see in the latest the latest "Which" magazine reliability report that Omegas up to 2 years old came out near the top, ahead of all the "prestige" marques above.
  • Changing brakes 22 Jul 2002 (Forum)
As part of my ongoing quest for safety l am looking to upgrade my volvo 480 calipers for something approaching the Brembo standard. (I was thinking of using larger disks/calipers from a v40 along with the rims themselves but now l'm like..whole hog) Please feel free to laugh at me for a moment and then assume l am serious.
  • RAC/Vodaphone Traffic info 4 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Your are near ...............Liverpool" Actually I was in Llandudno, which is near Liverpool across the water, if you have a motor cruiser with the speed of Virgin Atlantic Challenger, but is 60 miles, or 1 hour 37 minutes away by road and ageing Volvo. They then proceeded to tell me about conditions on the M62. Is this a case of some young whizz kid being too clever, I wonder. Worked fine before; now it doesn't.
  • 'Over drive 'v' 5 or 6 speed boxes 27 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I know that many 60 / 70s cars had overdrive, some on both 3rd and 4th giving in effect 6 speeds. Indeed I can remember seeing adverts for manual Volvos from the 1990s, stating the gearboxes were 4 speeds with overdrive, as opposed to the largely ubiquitous 5 speed boxes. So what was 'overdrive' and why do we not see it anymore? Ta Some cars now have 6 speed manuals.
  • whineing punto 25 Sep 2001 (Forum)
The noise comes only when accelerating & stops after about five minutes. After this the car is fine. The comments about the whistling volvo (backroom 07-09-01) sounded like a similar problem. I took the car to the local fiat garage. They checked the car out and charged me sixty quid to say they couldn't find anything wrong - and that the air idle by pass mechanism was fine.
  • Build Quality 17 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Or is it just a case that you should never buy a brand new model - give them a year to start putting them together properly and iron out the glitches? In contrast the 'new' Passat, Volvo V70 and Rover 75 seemed very well put together from high quality materials.....surely the Rover or Passat is a better buy if not a better drive?
  • 7 seats - Zafira or V70? 11 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Someone I know who has one says that drivers don't tailgate you when you have children in the back seats! Volvo chap says that the seats are in the safety cage area. I also wonder if car sickness is a problem as they face backwards I'm impressed by the versatility of the Zafira, but wonder if a 2-3 year old V70 may last longer and have better residuals.
  • Buying a left hand drive car over here to drive ov 28 Mar 2001 (Forum)
Also what are the import conditions into France? We will be looking for two cars. 1. A large diesel estate like a Volvo 850, Peugeot 406, or perhaps a Discovery for up to £12,000. 2. A small runabout - anything really, probably French up to £3000.
  • Removing Catalysts 19 Nov 2000 (Forum)
Obviously if avoidance of a massive charge for a new catalyst on an older car is the motive, then the simplest/cheapest option is the best. What are the consequences of simply replacing the pipe but doing nothing else? My car is a 1993 Volvo 240. Any of a big range of exhaust pipe/silencer options would fit, if fitted in entirety. A Golf Mk IV, Passat, Skoda Octavia, Superb A4 or A6 so equipped would easily sail past 500,000 miles and still go like the clappers. To me I think the Volvo 850 T5 manual wins it. Just as tough as any other Volvo but it handled well and could pulverise most hot hatches of the era yet it was still a refined and comfortable thing to sit in. The Touring cars of the time served to make you looked like daddy cool too.
  • Replacement car suggestions 21 Aug 2005 (Forum)
d like to canvass opinions on what options I should consider for changing my car. Since January 2001 I?ve had a 1998 Volvo S40 T4 which has now done 92,000 miles. On the whole I?ve been very pleased with the car. Pros: Storming performance, well equipped, understated image, more reasonable servicing/maintenance costs than I had expected, and it?
  • SAAB - SAAB 93, good opportunity or bad idea? 4 Jun 2009 (Forum)
We tend to drive the cars until they die (my MD has a 51 plate V70 which is still going strong at 180k miles or so), but running costs are a consideration (one of the reasons why I changed my Volvo to a BMW when the Volvo was getting tired). £12,500 seems a reasonable amount of money to buy a 1 year old / 10-15k mileage car and is roughly what we tend to spend. Better for the member of staff to have a bigger more comfy car for the mileage than a new Focus or similar.

  • Volvo S60 (2000 - 2009) - Two weeks (almost) review and update 18 Jan 2009 (Forum)
OK, now had the Volvo just shy of two weeks, during which time I've put about 800 miles on it. Plenty of time to get a good idea of fuel economy, and how the car is going to shape up as a long term ownership prospect. Here are my thoughts so far: Engine and performance: Certainly feels as quick as Autocar's 8.2 second 0-60 time.
  • Toyota Yaris - bigger car on a budget! 16 Jan 2025 (Forum)
I have one dog-medium to large breed and an almost 3 year old who is very tall and the height of a 5 year old! husband is 6'5! the Yaris is not our main family car my husband has a Volvo V60 but tbh it is not as big as he thought!  I am looking to get a  bigger car for myself, would like something  very reliable, automatic preferred, perhaps a small SUV or 4x4,would prefer a petrol budget is around £8,000 unsure whether to keep going my Yaris or get something bigger as the cabin space is tight and although the boot is generous I could do with more!
