  • suggestions please 17 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I am looking for suggestions or recomendations for a small 4 or 5 door car (fiesta size) to use as a second family car and for short but frequent commute (25 mile roundtrip per day). Don't need thrills just reliability and economy. I'm thinking diesel but some would argue that at current fuel prices this can be a false economy on smaller cars. budget is about £2k At the mo considering Corsa, Fiesta or polo but at this budget I can't find much that is less than 6yrs old and about 80k miles.
  • Volkswagen Passat (1988 - 1997) - 96 1.9Tdi Estate, srarting problems. 15 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Initially after doing this sometimes the car would not start, but after a few days it was o.k The problem I have got now is that when you turn the engine it tries to start and then when you accelerate it cuts off. Someone has suggested it could be an electrical relay issue. There is plenty of diesel in the car. The heater light does tend to go off after a few seconds and then comes back on agan. Could it be a fuel pump problem.please advise. .
  • Rover 600 starting problems 3 Oct 2005 (Forum)
My rover 600 diesel 98 model has starting problems as the weather gets colder or i i leave the car for a day or two. I had battery replaced and my garage replaced 3 of the 4 glow plugs. He said the fourth glow plug was behind fuel pump and would take longer. everything seemed ok put as the weather has got colder it is taking longer to start.
  • Question for Dan J (Mondeo TDCi auto) 28 Apr 2004 (Forum)
tangential to the diesel - auto thread. Dan, Seem to remember you were going to start working for Ford. Did they ever sort the mismatch between the TDCi engine and the Durashift gearbox? What is it like to drive in practice?
  • Vauxhall Omega 2.2 DTi CDX smoking 30 Dec 2003 (Forum)
My 51 plate Omega 2.2 DTi CDX is billowing white smoke from under the offside front wing so much so that passing motorist draw my attention to it cos they think i'm on fire. The smoke fills the cabin with diesel fumes. The car has been in the dealership twice and the answer from Vauxhall technical department is that a sort of exhaust system is creating the smoke and that this is normal operation also fuel drips from this exhaust pipe under the offside wing.
  • £5K to spend, what to buy? 22 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Hello Soon to be made redundant, will give up my trusty company Focus, need to buy something and am hoping for some help. OK here goes, £5K to spend, want Focus size vehicle, Diesel if possible, will be doing 15-25K miles per year, mostly motorways. Love the Focus handling, but this is not so important if I am driving my 'own' vehicle as I wont be thrashing it quite so much. Servicing, Insurance, Fuel costs (or lack of) quite important as I have a feeling I am going to be skint for a while before getting the new business going.
  • Diesel v petrol - nearly-new comparison 11 Mar 2008 (Forum)
There aren't any four-year old Versos to compare, but four-year-old RAV4s seem to show about a £1000 premium for diesel. So it looks as if a year-old petrol Verso might lose £5000 in the next three years, but a diesel one might lose £7000. So what am I missing? It's possible that the 1.8 engine isn't up to hauling a short but not small car, so I'll try one and find out.
  • Towing - common fail D or petrol v costs 19 Jun 2007 (Forum)
OK, I know the obvious answer is a Diesel, but how many of us can afford to keep on buying new and ensure we get rid of the thing before the warranty expires, because that is the most cost effective, hassle-free way I can think of of driving a diesel as I do.
  • Mazda CX-5 2018 diesel - White smoke problems 17 Jan 2024 (Forum)
It always stops when the engine starts to get warm and then it's totally fine. The smell is like a bad diesel smell, so I believe it is unburnt diesel fuel. This is the same pattern every time it happens. Only ever happens when the engine is cold and seems to be exacerbated when it's very cold outside. It does still happen in the summer months though.
  • Long commute car suggestions ? 9 Nov 2010 (Forum)
So, I am looking for a replacement car, second hand, but only have 4-5k plus whatever I can get for the CR-V.   I'm thinking that I should be looking at a diesel  of some type ? But the only diesels I can see are way above my affordability, or have, what I think a lot of mileage - some of the diesels have around 100K on the clock - I dont know if this is a bad thing for diesels (I have heard that diesel engines are better with high mileage than petrol).
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.8 Advice/guidance needed on HUGE garage error 28 Sep 2009 (Forum)
They admitted they hadn't used the correct key/rod that you insert into the engine when changing belts over and the timing of the car had gone wrong, but would be put right at their own expense..... Now 2 weeks later the car still does not even turn over and they have told me the fuel pump is broken and I need to cough up £290 to repair it or £600 for a new one as they never touched the fuel pump so it's obviously my fault! But my argument is THEY are probably the ones who damaged it by running the car with an incorrectly timed engine thus chugging through too little or too much diesel?
  • Volvo S60 (2010 - ) - Direct injection petrol engine - a good idea? 17 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Is Volvo serious about introducing this engine into the production version? Those figures are incredible, and must give diesel buyers something to think about, given that 119g/km has to be accompanied by mpg figures somewhere up towards the 50's, and on fuel that's still about 12p per litre cheaper. I have the prececessor to this car with an engine making the same power output but from 400cc more and with 100g of extra CO2 per km.
  • Retrospective views road transport and Electricity 16 Apr 2008 (Forum)
The current focus of adding bio fuels to regular fuel just seems so short sighted given the number of vehicles that need fueling. Once down the petroleum path, difficult to go back... But any comments or any other examples of where motoring and the road transport system could have been different to now?

  • New Car - Long Range, Decent Drive & low costs 4 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Also looking for the best economy we can, and we would prefer to pay as little tax as possible. Range over 600 miles is essential others things are nice to have. Dont mind fuel type but diesel seems most likley. Price up to about 20k, prefer new or under 1 year old. Any ideas for a shortlist please?   Thanks in advance
  • Fiat Panda Multijet 2006 - Suitable fault code reader 3 Jan 2013 (Forum)
On the 60's and 70's vehicles I was brought up on, the most complex electronic component was an SU fuel pump.  But the need for fuel economy and the fact that all the old cars are worn out has forced us to buy a modern one.  I realise that the cheaper a OBD reader is, the less it can do, but can I get something that will identify why an engine fault light has come on so I can at least have an idea of which sensor is sending the ecu an unexpected reading?
  • Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9 DT - Advice please!! 20 Nov 2012 (Forum)
So I own a Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9 DT 52Reg with 77000 on the clock, and a while ago started having this problem...the van surges as if there is a block in fuel, revs get up to 3500 in each gear but wont go any further. When pulling away in 1st gear it struggles for a while until the engines sort of ''kicks in''. Took it to the mechanic, had it tuned up and serviced, redex fuel treatment in diesel done, also the EGR valve was replaced as apparently was full of carbon.
  • Volkswagen Golf GT TDi IV Mk 4 - Rough Idle? 1 Jun 2012 (Forum)
It didn't help that at the time the car was running properly so he said he wasn't sure what's wrong. Could it be the fuel injectors being faulty? I always get fuel from Shell and thought they had good diesel. Please can someone give me some advice? Thank you.
  • Vauxhall Vectra C - Vectra C In Limp Mode 10 Feb 2012 (Forum)
The engine Management light came on and the car went into Limp Mode on my Vectra whilst I was driving it. I took it round to a garage who suspected I had filled up with bad fuel. They changed my Fuel Filter which made no difference. They then told me that my Inlet Manifold needed changing, which they did and it made no difference. They put it on the diagnostic machine which flagged up Crankshaft Sensor, but the garage told me my car doesnt have one?
  • vauxhall vectra c - hesitation and rough running 8 Jun 2011 (Forum)
I havent had the car that long so im sure of the exact maintenance record (no receipts) although the service book is fully stamped by independant gararges. The reason i say this is because i have feeling its a fuel problem and can find no evidance of the fuel filter ever being changed. Am i going down the wrong road? maybe something more sinister! :( Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.
