  • Am I an outside lane hogger - verdict? 11 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I don't try to catch up with them as I am happy doing 80, and anyway, there are the occasional speed cameras on this road. In theory, I suppose I should be pulling into the inside lane after each lorry, then pulling out again to overtake the next one. But I just sit in the outside lane, gradually overtaking each lorry.
  • Letter from Lagos 17 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Even the State Governor and his entourage pitched up, in a convoy of brand new Peugeot 504s and Toyota Landcruisers. I was standing pitchside with camera, and he made a point of walking up and saying hello, and having a chat. (I was the only white bloke in the stadium!) The game was pretty good, with Enyimba leading 3-0, due to a succession of goalkeeping errors, when disaster struck?
  • If you don't want to get a ticket "just" 20 Nov 2001 (Forum)
In some areas more responsible Local Authorities are erecting 'This is still a 30 Zone' signs as a way of reducing speeds and getting round restrictive guidelines on the use of repeaters. Others just erect a 'safety' camera. The ABD's Road Safety Spokesman, Mark McArthur-Christie said 'Some drivers drive like idiots and need their speed curbing, but we believe that the vast majority of drivers would stick to speed limits if they were more clearly posted, or councils put up repeaters where the environment changes.'
  • Received MG4E postal requisition for section 172 8 Mar 2016 (Forum)
I replied to the NIP stating that I could not remember who was driving but that it would either be myself or my girlfriend and asked for photographic evidence in order to ascertain who was driving at the time and from reading this site I also included her contact details, I also mentioned that (in an attempt of "reasonable diligence") I had spoken to my girlfriend and she could not recall who was driving, I had phoned the manager of a petrol station that I know we often refuel at, in order to ask for CCTV footage of the day the offence was commited so that if we did happen to fill up there on that day then we could see who was in the drivers seat, as the location of the speed camera is about 2 miles from this station, so if we filled up there then the person driving off the forecourt would have been driving at the time of the camera flash. No such luck, the station manager informed me on the phone that the CCTV is only available for the previous 2 weeks and we were 1 week too late.
  • Toyota Yaris 1.5 - 10,000 miles on 1 Dec 2019 (Forum)
The car was comfortable, reasonably spacious (considering its compact dimensions), extremely economical and very well equipped having: Cruise Control, Reversing Camera, Sat Nav etc. The above issues made this a difficult car to live with. This car has now been traded in and I’ll start a new thread on its replacement. Think this thread proves that you can do all the research you like, but you do need a bit of luck as well when car buying.

Managed to get a drive in a 110 PS hatch on Friday and it was difficult to tell if it was any better since Friday PM in the city with speed cameras is not the best environment for a test drive. One thing that was definitely better was the 6 speed box in the 110 version. Filled the gaps better than the 5 speed which was not entirely happy at 30 mph in 4th, the 6 speed was.
  • Dashcam mini review Mini 0801 Ambarella 25 Apr 2014 (Forum)
It includes GPS, and when you play a movie in the supplied player software, not only do you see the video from the camera, you also see a map view, with the course of the car shown in green, it's impressive. The player software is rather slick looking but a tad clunky. I only expect to use it as and when there is an incident, and I need to check the video to use as evidence.

kits in case we have to hike in the howling rain or camp in the wilderness. (well?.) First Aid Kit Tablets Disposable Camera, but film is probably well out of date now Selection of household batteries and fuses Gloves Hat Spare Coat (think I forgot mine once, so that sealed the fate that a spare cheapo would live in the car) Picnic Blanket Foldaway Chairs x 2 (the Motorway Services 2 for £10 ones) Coins for car parks One thing I note is lacking ?
  • Goodbye 1 Nov 2006 (Forum)
The technical bods (no way am I going to name you all - I'm bound to miss someone out) and the people on the Discussion side who have made this place a fantastic place to be. To think, I signed up when I started Uni after setting off a red light camera and I must have made about 7000 posts since then! Without wanting to get too soppy, there have been some true Gents on here and I'm....(honoured is probably too strong a word for here) glad that I've been able to listen to advice - sometimes sage, sometimes complete rubbish!
  • Motorway driving 25 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I have been paying attention and noticed a few things; There are a lot of police cars pulling cars over and frequently cameras. I said this once before after I had just started travelling on the M40 (between J9 and J13 btw) and somebody else said they never saw any. Well, they're wrong. Very wrong. And I advise anybody using that bit in rush hours to watch themselves.
  • Those wonderful Insurance people 27 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Insurance Companys are not my favourite flavour this year, they took 2 years bonus from me in september when a cretin set fire to a car in a public car park that spread to my & 2 other cars and because i made a claim i mam now a risk as the car that was originally set alight was a stolen car...so this has affeected all my vehicles as regards Insurance. Legalised robbery 2nd only to speed camera's..anyway what i'm peeved at is that they quoted me for a LExus Soarer & now that i've pointed out that its a "Toyota" they wont entertain it, i've pointed out that there is no such car as a Lexus Soarer in RHD & that they are all "Toyota's" therfore "all" Soarers are Grey imports but No No in fact the cover note they sent me said it was a Lexus Sourer & the insurance broker was telling me thats what they had quoted me on not a Soarer!!!!
  • Do we molly-coddle cars ? 12 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I don't care if they keep their foot on the brake in traffic, my pupils are built to protect my retina, I don't mind if they driver slower than I want to, I just overtake them at some point; there's no point in jumping up and down about traffic jams, it only amuse the kids in the next car; Personalised plates don't bother me, not that I have one; baseball caps backwards look uncomfortable, but they don't bother me. Speed cameras don't bother me, I just drive carefully in their vicinity. I strongly suspect that two-jags, Tony Blair and the entire police force do not even know I exist and probably are not conspiring against me.
  • Red Route fines going up. From This is Money. 7 Aug 2021 (Forum)
The proposals for larger fines comes just a week after  TfL announced that the 'temporary' increase to the Congestion Charge - up from £11.50 to £15 - would be made permanent , though the hours of operation reduced. It recently confirmed the rollout of up to 50 new 'smart cameras' across London’s roads that will help enforce rules and reduce road deaths.  The consultation end will also come just a month ahead of the  extension to the capital's Ultra Low Emission Zone , which will cover the entirety of London between the North and South Circular Roads and change drivers of non-compliant older vehicles £12.50 a day each time they get behind the wheel.
  • Replacing a Hyundai i10 15 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Order placed for an SEL 110 bhp 6-speed manual: the only extras needed were metallic Race Blue paint, a reversing camera and a space-saver spare wheel.  I think we've done the right thing, but I look forward to people on here telling me we didn't.  I hope it's of interest anyway.
  • Audi Q2 - a year and a bit 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Things worth having: Lumbar support; heated front seats (for SWMBO); power tailgate (well worth having, not least so that you can open it remotely and find the car in a car park); rear view camera; automatic high-beam assist; space-saver spare wheel; auto hill hold; and auto-dimming rear-view mirror (the last two shouldn't have been extras). I went for, but not sure I would again, the Tech Pack with the 'virtual cockpit': the main screen is atop the dashboard and angled towards the driver, so having the same map in front of you isn't much of a bonus.

Front fogs Parking sensors (camera instead) Self park Auto dipping rear view mirror Folding mirrors I was also surprised it didn’t have: DAB radio Xenon headlights Heating to the standard fit leather/alcantara seats I mentioned the safety fitments.
  • Honda Civic - Is this car a good buy / fair price? 15 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Something a bit newer (even if it has more miles), or something with a higher spec (such as with reversing camera, Cruise Control, etc.). Or is this car still a good buy at this price?
  • More from the Far Side 11 Jan 2003 (Forum)
"The traffic police are always coming up with these new ideas so they can extract ligay (bribes). Buckle Up Week is just another police scam for raising money". (wait till we get speed cameras!) "It's pointless putting seat belts in the car's rear. The accident will be at the front". "If you are a senior citizen you should be exempt from wearing seat belts". "Seatbelts are crazy, like those on airplanes.
  • Help with replacement car choice 16 Feb 2017 (Forum)
The Hyundai has been generally reliable with only two faults fixed under warranty, a failed propshaft bearing and failed reversing camera.   What would the backroomers choose in my situation?
  • Waves, string instability theory and traffic jams 10 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I think it deserves a  thread on its own rather than wrapping it up in the one on average speed cameras. There was also a recent television programme on Channel 4 about it. At holiday periods motorists will experience the familiar frustration of being stuck on a motorway in a ‘phantom’ traffic jam that eventually disperses with no road works to blame, or any other apparent cause.
