  • Volkswagen Polo IV 2006/7 - Auto Gearbox any good? 12 Aug 2021 (Forum)
My usual commute is around 1 mile local road, 40 miles motorway and 10 miles A road.  Would the Polo automatic box be suited to that type of driving?
  • Ford Focus Manual - Bad Ankle and Manual Car 18 Jan 2020 (Forum)
I have suffered an ankle injury which is not going to improve on my left foot so using the clutch is very painful. I can't afford to change to an automatic.  Are there any mechanical devices that would allow me to control the clutch with my hand, I am thinking along the lines of a camera cable release but more robust of course.  Alternatively if anyone can point me to a reputable company that fits these sort of devices that would be helpful.
  • Economical auto advice 17 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Budget just about tretches to a 2013, but again doesnt seem that economical for my miles as the older auto models only come in a 1.8 from what i can see. Any recommendations for an economical automatic with the safety and reliability of those mentioned? Budget is £5,500 - 6,500 Thank you
  • Seat Alhambra - Parking sensors, rear view camera 9 Oct 2019 (Forum)
Good morning I have as Seat Alhambra I-tec which has been repaired due to a minor accident, despite a decent looking job the parking sensors and rear view camera no longer appear to work. They are supposed to activate automatically when reversing but no longer do so, my guess being as the sensors have not been re-attached. A thumb through the handbook says use the switch on the centre console, but no joy from trying this ??
  • Vauxhall Zafira - Zafira 1.8 - X reg, 157,000 miles, urgent opinions 8 Nov 2018 (Forum)
I test drove a Zafira Automatic today, it seemed to drive ok.  It is high mileage (157K) and 1.8 - is it worth the £600 asking price or are my future months/years with it bound to be full of repair bills? The engine has a warning light on saying low oil - the salesman checked oil and said it was low - but maybe this was caused by a leak?
  • Peugeot 3008 - Fuel Consumption and Performance: 150 vs.163 28 Jul 2018 (Forum)
Surely the difference is not simply explained by the transmission losses and extra weight of an automatic box? I'd love to buy the Auto/163 but cannot justify the hit that I'd take with the fuel consumption. Unless I'm missing something? S/H prices seem to indicate that the 163 is not so popular.

  • Kia Venga - Which auto 21 Jul 2016 (Forum)
I would quite like an automatic car.  The Kia Venga meets most of my needs. The older models have a TC 4 gear auto and the newer ones a 6 gear DSG.  I am read many negative comments about VAG  DSG but wonder if the KIA transmission is better.

  • VW Golf 1.6 SR Hatch - VW Golf loosing power on turns only 12 Oct 2014 (Forum)
I let go the accelerator and press again and it seems to rev up again ok. It happens when the turn signal is turned off automatically at the turn. I tried a few time without switching on the signal and it works fine. Any ideas? I am suspecting an electrical problem.

  • VW Golf MK 7 DSG - Problems Solved or not? 8 May 2013 (Forum)
I have read HJ's test report but it fails to comment on whether the latest Golf  incarnation now has a trouble-free DSG automatic transmission or not.  With all the MK6 etc owners comments about DSG problems and the now extended DSG warantees in many other countries one is "left hanging" with regard to whether to risk buying a UK specification DSG Golf just to encounter unbelievable difficulties or to plump for a seemingly trouble-free Ford auto gearbox Focus?
  • Ford C-MAX - early manual clutch burnout 10 Oct 2012 (Forum)
We have had our Grand CMax 1.6 manual diesel 14 months with less than 10000 miles, half motorway, half local. We have both been driving 50+ years a wide range of manuals and automatics. We were really surprised that the clutch had burned out so early and that Ford did not want to know, saying it was driver misuse  Although we live in a hilly area, and where there are speed bumps we have not had a problem before.
  • Citroen C4 2007 1.6 diesel or honda civic? 29 May 2012 (Forum)
Do you think roughly that's an ok price for a 9 year old car?Whilst waiting my car was a citroen and I've just seen a citroen c4 automatic 1.6 2007 with 120000 but it's diesel and has amazing fuel rates, it's around £3200. Any experience with the c4's? Thanks :)
  • any - nanual stop/start-goosed Tom Tom 19 Mar 2012 (Forum)
With a recent thread about the merit (or lack thereof) of automatic stop/start, I decided to run a manual version to see if it made a significant financial difference. I think it might have-a very negative one. My Tom tom has suddenly stopped charging. Upon closer inspection, the fuse in the charging cable had blown-as has the fuse in the 12V socket.
  • Honda CR-V - Burning rubber Smell 22 Jan 2011 (Forum)
I drive a 2005 petrol automatic - quite often when I  "hang around" outside the car rather than walking away from the car after a journey I do smell something akin to the burning of rubber tyres. Mentioned it at the last service but ofcourse they smelt nothing - its been like that for a couple of years- I sometimes believe  its worse when I've driven uphill on very wet /muddy roads and think its something to do with the rear wheels kicking in - but honestly have never felt the kick of the rear wheels so not really sure about that.
  • VOLVO V70 CLASSIC - VOLVO V70 CLASSIC HEATER FAN 3 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I have a 2000 Volvo V70 classic 170bhp; the heater fan on the air conditioning has suddenly stopped blowing; the electrics seem ok. I am getting conflicting advice: 1) That if the gas is low, the heater fan automatically stops blowing, and that re-gassing will cure it. Is this correct? 2) That the heater fan requires a new motor, for which I have been quoted £370 including VAT but excluding labour to fit - is this a rip-off, where can I get it done cheaper?
