  • Warning - ECOTEC Cam Belts 23 Apr 2001 (Forum)
On collecting the car I was told that both return tooth rollers had had to be replaced - the implication being that they showed signs of failing. I understand that these are the parts that have been failing on Vauxhall engines recently leading to cam belt faliure and expensive repairs. My advice (re-inforced by HJ in the past) is that cam belts should be changed at regular intervals and not at maker's intervals. I have no complaints about this dealer at all in fact there servicing service is far better than the dealer that I bought my car from - less hanging around car delivered clean and tidy and on time....This is the third Main Vauxhall dealer I have used with my cars and by far the best.
  • Mondeo Diesel 19 Mar 2001 (Forum)
His job is driving Texaco fuel tankers on regular nights and he was telling me today about meeting a chap the other night who is one of Fords leading training engineers who travels all over the continent training mechanics on diesel engines etc. John explained his problem and the fella said this was a fairly common one on Mondeo'sand had something to do with a split on a plastic pipe possibly to the pump, and described in detail what was happening.
  • Waves, string instability theory and traffic jams 10 Jun 2010 (Forum)
The research, supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), will lead to better traffic flow forecasting to help prevent congestion. Dr Wilson has looked at existing traffic models in a new way using ‘string instability’ theory to test how good these computer-based methods are at predicting how traffic flows and queues build up and dissipate.
  • I am a recovery service, I am 12 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I press the newly-exhausted AX into service for a jump start. It takes only a minute to realise that the jump leads that have been sitting in the AX boot for over a year are useless, dangerous even. The plastic insulation of one clip bubbles, melts on to the battery and then smokes vigorously. I return home for the jump leads from my car.
  • Every parking fine in country invalid? 7 Jul 2006 (Forum)
That is to say, no fine such as the fixed penalty charge used by local authorities, police forces and various government departments from the Companies House to HM Revenue & Customs, can be lawfully issued and these bodies need to secure a conviction in a court of law before any financial penalty can be handed down. The consequences of Justice Collins? decision could be staggering and may lead to a full blown constitutional crisis. Constitutional crisis As no doubt many constitutional experts will be aware, on 21 July 1993, the Speaker of The House of Commons issued a reminder to the courts.
  • BMW overtakes Mercedes 8 Jul 2004 (Forum)
JD Power-LMC, the market analyst, predicts that Mercedes will take back the top slot in the full year and increase its lead next year when more models are updated. It forecasts a 17 per cent jump in Mercedes Car Group sales next year to 1.56m, more than a quarter higher than BMW's expected 1.22m.
  • Zip merge? That'll be the day... 23 May 2025 (Forum)
Unless there are two ramrod straight, equal length, queues of cars in perfect parallel formation, a lot of drivers simply will not let another driver in if there's the slightest chance that someone might gain "unfair" advantage and a half second lead over someone who has been queuing patiently for at least three minutes.    I was once severely tooted at for the apparently unpardonable sin of letting two cars in front instead of just the one.
  • Tyre performance and tread depth 20 Nov 2024 (Forum)
I appreciate that as per the article, Michelin and probably some other premium brands are leading the way in this full tyre life technology. There was a great video a couple of years ago on the excellent Tyre reviews website where an almost completely worn Crossclimate was tested against a brand new budget tyre and performed at least if not better in most catagories.
  • 2001 Mk2 1.2 16v Petrol - 2001 Mk2 1.2 16v Petrol - turns over, won’t start. 13 Jul 2024 (Forum)
I added about 3L of petrol today. Attempted to start it multiple times, including with jump leads as the battery got low. Turnover time was about 3 min in total. I assume that should have been plenty to get fuel up to the injectors. I have never had to bleed a petrol system. Maybe bleeding is needed with Clio.
  • Daihatsu Skywing - Indicators cross-flashing 3 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Assuming its something Earthy, I jumpered the Front light Earth terminal to bat -ve, and it started working, as did the wing bulb.  The cross-flashing also went away. The leads to the sidelight are now dead (were OK before) so I'll have to piggy-back it off the front light. Of course the wiring loom is probably knackered (though I don't understand exactly how) and it may well develop new symptoms,'but I'm overdue for inspection, so I'll try for another lashup and hope it holds together for the requisite few hours
  • 1986 Daihatsu Skywing - High Beam Fault Finding Tactics 12 Nov 2021 (Forum)
I'm wondering if I need to try and buy or improvise in-line fuse protection for my jumper leads. Since the currents involved are normally carried by the switch perhaps I can assume they wont be too damaging, even with likely mis-connection?
  • VW CC - Advanced Driving 6 May 2021 (Forum)
The first one is :"only indicate when you can see someone else that it will benefit" My understanding of the reasoning behind this is that: It prevents one from indicating then absolving oneself of all responsibility thereafter It prevents indication pollution, where everyone is indicating thus leading to confusion It forces one to actively identify every car in the vicinity that would benefit and could become a hazard. The problem i have with this is that I never felt that I was abdicating responsibility, merely informing other road users of my intentions.
  • Ford fiesta zetec - Car juddering at low speed 23 Feb 2021 (Forum)
I've added redex as well. I've just changed the spark plugs and still no change. Tomorrow will be the ignition leads and then coil pack. Can anyone suggest something else??   Don't give me a heart attack, she has already cost me an arm and a leg for things which was caused by sitting around like tyres, steels, balancing, tracking, timing belt etc etc    Thanks all
  • SU carb problem - Triumph Bonneville 11 May 2020 (Forum)
I should also mention that I've had the bike garaged for a few years, and I filled up with LRP (instead of leaded petrol) for the first time ever just before I took it out on this run - I mention this just in case LRP might make a difference to something inside the carb. So my questions really are: 1. If I strip it down, what should I be looking for?
  • 2006 Focus 1.6 Ti-VCT - Focus hesitation/stutter 20 Jul 2019 (Forum)
It doesnt seem to do it at low revs if its in a high gear and I boot it. Ive done the usual, replaced the leads, plugs and coil, there is no water in the plug wells. Ive swapped out the throttle body, MAF sensor and injectors for known good units (thanks to a patient friend) and even had the PCM updated to the latest software and reset the adaptations, but nothing has helped.
  • VW Tiguan 1.4 s BlueMotion - Advice re: Faulty Injector - Wear and Tear? 4 Jun 2018 (Forum)
Morning all, I’d appreciate your thoughts on the predicament I find myself in concerning my 2010 1.4 Petrol twincharged VW Tiguan that I bought 2 years ago and has completed 59000 documented miles.  It has developed a misfire which, by swopping over coil packs and leads, has been proved to cylinder 4 and my local technician (ex VW) says its most probably a faulty injector and advised me to try an injector cleaning additive first because a replacement would be expensive.

  • Ford Focus Estate 1.6 TDCI - Fumes inside car. In need of some clarification! 16 Nov 2017 (Forum)
Or am I missing something basic here? So any explanations would be welcome. Can the issues with DPF and EGR on their own lead to fumes in engine area? Or is the mechanic on the wrong track?! AND... is having an artificial regen on the DPF likely to help the sooty fumes issue? Thanks!
  • Developments 20 Mar 2017 (Forum)
It seems that you can buy or lease several models of cars that are fuel cell driven, made by leading manufacturers including Honda, Hyundai and Toyota.   All are able to compete with petrol or diesel fuelled cars with respect to range.   The only new technology is in the fuel cell, all the other features are taken from battery electric or hybrid vehicles.
  • SEAT Leon SC - Non-starting Seat Leon S 03 1.6 16v 1 Aug 2016 (Forum)
I have given up on working the issue out, so passed it to my mechanic who is also bemused as to what is causing it. Sparks, coil and ht leads are all OK. New alternator and battery has been fitted.  O2 sensor and ECU maybe faulty, but don't want to go down the route of sorting that out unless needed, as have already forked out over £400 trying to fix this.
