my car seems to run fine if left overnight but on occasions when when left for a few hours after my first trip the engine will start running idling rough . Almost feels like the ECU may be running in limp mode . I kinda ruled out HT leads and plugs because it starts ok and runs ok first thing in the morning . any ideas would be helpful cheers
  • Volvo 850 (1992 - 1996) - 1994 T5 - Engine cranks but doesn't fire 30 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Any common problems he can look at in the morning, before I have to go out to him with a trailer? He had a new cap, arm, and leads fitted a couple of weeks ago as part of a service.
  • Using an inverter. 13 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I've an inverter, which I plug into the cigarette lighter socket, and use to feed a 4x extension lead. Charging things from the inverter when going along, and using low-powered accessories (150W max.) is fine - however, I noticed that the toothbrush charger - the sort that you plug in and the brush "sits" on - gets pretty hot - much hotter than when using "normal" mains electricity at home.

  • Motorists to vote labour out 26 Jun 2008 (Forum)
"Rocketing prices at the fuel pumps could lead motorists to vote out the Government, a poll claims today. Two-thirds of 18,500 AA members surveyed said they would vote for a different government should petrol prices rise to between 125p and 149p a litre."
  • What stopped your car? 23 Jun 2008 (Forum)
One was the moving contact of a set of points snapping off, the other the low tension wire snapping at the coil. I have yet to suffer the common rail diesel disaster predicted by some, am I leading a charmed life? What stopped your car?

  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.8 Zetec Hesitation,misfire up to 2k revs. 24 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Having changed the ht leads and plugs on my focus i have still got a really bad and unnerving rough idle the car runs 'lumpy' (sounds like a vw camper) and loss of power on any sort of incline, although once the revs pass 2k it seems to clear but the power issue (hesitation) is still there..
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - MK4 Endura running rough and reving 19 Aug 2007 (Forum)
When changing gear i.e clutch down the car sometimes over revs, the car has also become quite jurky as if its miss firing, though this could be plugs/ht leads etc. Does anybody know what this could be? The car seems to idle perfectly fine and never stalls. Could the two problems be connected? The car also runs far too hot though this is a separate problem.
  • Thinking of buying a Saab 93 but 21 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I have read elsewhere on this forum of bulkhead cracks which lead to expensive repairs. See: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?v=e&t=23137&m=233981# When I come to inspect a 93 would I be able to identify this problem? If so where do I look? My automotive knowledge is sorely lacking - I have no idea where the bulkhead is to begin with!
  • recognition test.. 31 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I was sorting through old files and foders last week and discovered old negatives from my college days. The link below leads to a pic. of a fellow student's Topolino that we re-built and ran for a year whilst at the Swansea College of Art. The location of the pic. is a bomb site next to the college, -one of the first NCP car parks.
  • This site and performance... 14 Jan 2007 (Forum)
However, if I press post, and then press it again, it immediately takes me to the message "this message has already been posted" or somesuch. This leads me to believe that in the normal course of things the site is up to something totally irrelevant and perhaps wrong, where causing an error bypasses the issue. And don't tell me its related to today's problems, because it isn't.
  • will any rover 111i parts fit a metro? 26 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I'm guessing not, but if anything would fit I would remove it before the car goes to the scrap yard. The 111i had a new middle and back box 8 months ago, and new plugs and leads at the end of November. Thanks

  • Focus - splutters on acceleration 10 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Gentle acceleration, or easing off the throttle when it does splutter, seems to stop it. Starts fine, and cruses along fine. The local Ford garage replaced the leads and plugs which fixed it for a few days but it's now back as before. Before I chuck too much money at this, is there anything easy or obvious I should check or suggest a garag checks? Thanks Nick

  • Citroen BX starting problem 30 Aug 2005 (Forum)
While contemplating my Xsara's stubborn door, my neighbour sought help with his J-rej BX which he can't start. Although he does very low mileage the plugs and all the leads seemed in good nick but on cranking the engine I could see no spark. It's a 1.9 (carburettor) with electronic ign. in what looks like a conventional distributor. There was no warning of any developing problem.
  • Wrong way along a motorway 17 Jun 2005 (Forum)
The police used a stinger to stop him but he did a U turn and drove on on his wheel rims. What on earth leads a man to deliberately drive like that? Many years ago on the M20 I was passed by a bloke driving the wrong way and it is a very frightening experience, the approach speed leaves you with split second decisions and I was'nt expecting it.
  • Dirty Petrol - Rover 414 19 May 2005 (Forum)
I've got a Rover 414SLI 1990 H with an intermitent running problem - after about 1o mins running it starts to miss fire but only as if on 1 cylinder then picks up ok - its got new plugs, leads, dist cap & rotor arm, air filter. The coil was changed about 20K ago - is it dirty petrol as it seems to be worse after say a motorway run but will 'miss' going up/down the off ramp? - Any help will be appreciated as its driving me mad!
