Audi 80 Mk II (1991-1995) - 1993 2.0E - Unusual problem, loosing power. 17 Feb 2008 (Forum)
My first thing to think of was the cat as it has started rattling really bad lately and could have got blocked up intermittintly or some thing electrical (plugs leads?) or the fuel (qtr tank) that was in tank was dodgy. I put 30 quid of fresh fuel in and it seems ok now after a 100 mile round trip today, however it still has a slight bit of hesitation espically under load, but iss still more than driveable. -
Honda Accord Tourer (2003 - 2008) - Warranty Repairs 1 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Have had a couple of experiences with Honda garages that lead me to believe that Honda are giving their dealers a rough deal with respect to warranty claims. The first issue was a faulty bluetooth device which my supplying dealer could not repair due to a design fault. -
Rover 45 (1999 - 2005) - 2001 1.8i XL - Is this a 'K' Series engine 12 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Head gasket failure common on K series four cylinder engines because very low coolant capacity of engine means small leaks rapidly lead to overheating. Weakest point is water heated inlet manifold gasket. 1.8 K Series head gasket failures. How do I know if this car I'm going to look at is a 'K' Series engine? Thanks for any help. -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 1994 16.CL - Missing a Beat 10 Jan 2008 (Forum)
When cut happens a red warning light illuminates for the 1 second which I initially presumed to be the ignition light. All the warning lights are coloured red. I replaced the spark plugs, HT leads, rotor arm, distributor cap and coil without improvement then realised it was in fact the oil light that was coming on. Although it is difficult to be sure, the Rev counter may also cut. Replacing both the oil pressure switches has not solved the problem. -
Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - 93 1.1 petrol. coolant sensor location 30 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Can anyone tell me 'exactly' where the coolant temperature sensor is on this car if indeed there is one because I cannot locate it having been round the coolant circuit/block now several times looking for any likely suspects with two leads coming from it. Is it accessible from the top as Haynes mentions having to jack up the car to get to it - but still cannot find it. (Found the crank sensor ok). What this car does have that I have not seen referenced in Haynes is a largeish cylindrical silver coloured sensor in the exhaust pipe about one foot down from the manifold and two inches from the radiator where the two pipes become one. -
Supermarket cynicism in money off fuel offers. 23 Dec 2007 (Forum)
If there is an existing thread on this subject then I apologise for neglecting to add to it. I had an experience recently of the way at least one of our leading super markets encourages customers to part with their money in devious but legal ways. My chosen SM periodically has a promotion on ?cheap? fuel. If the customer spends more than £50.00 in the shop then a coupon is given entitling the said customer to 5p per litre off the fuel in the SM station. -
Recommend possible new cars for my dad? 15 Oct 2007 (Forum)
He is having problems with it that I will be posting in Technical shortly but I can see this ultimately leading to him having to change the car. He currently tows a caravan that he would like to continue towing but may accept that his towing days are behind him (he also has a static caravan on a site). So to the criteria Automatic Diesel - a must (doesn't want petrol) Cruise Control As many "toys" as possible High Driving position - a must Preferably 3 individual folding seats in back (he likes to picnic a lot and folds the middle seat for their "table" - I know I know but it makes him happy! -
Proton Coupe 1.8 - Been Standing 8 Jun 2007 (Forum)
the back discs do not appear to be ridding themselves of the rust and the handbrake no longer works well it barely makes a contact, will not hold the car, so it seems that there is no fluid getting to the rear brakes, could this potentially be leading to major work needed on the back or is it something like a cylinder or just the fact it needs a good run? what are the other things i should look for before taking on this if the car has been stood such a while? -
Mk3 1.6 Golf misfire - help! 5 Jun 2007 (Forum)
If i don't move the throttle when the misfire happens I loose all power and the car just looses speed like it's been turned off... If I open or close the throttle power returns, this leads to some interesting Kangaroo driving in the lower gears ;o) Power is OK when it's not misfiring. Fault doesn't seem to happen when the engine is cold, only after running for a few mins. It is very repeatable at the same throttle position when on the hill on my way home from work. -
Heater Not Hot - Seat Alhambra 1.9 TDi 9 May 2007 (Forum)
The heater is the manual type, not the electronic climatronic version. The mechanics of the heater have been checked out, the dials are attached to their respective leads etc & the thermostat has been replaced. This has not made any difference. l have heard that there is a secondary auxilary heater, in front of the near side rear wheel, that uses glow plugs to ignite diesel & if this has not fired several times (sooted up?) -
Renault 21 Savanna emission problems 20 Mar 2007 (Forum)
To date I have; Changed the air filter, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor arm. In the last 9-10 months, I have changed all the HT leads and performed an oil filter and oil change. The mixture has been weakened as much as is physically possible but the problem persists. I am at the end of my tether and have run out of ideas at this point and the MOT is now 5 days away.... -
VW Polo Mk4 (1999) cutting out 12 Feb 2007 (Forum)
We have already: (1) Changed the engine temp. sensor, (2) Cleaned the throttle body, (3) Replaced the inline fuel filter (after removing the pump's mesh filter to allow any debris to be flushed into the inline filter). (4) Changed the HT leads, distributor cap and rotor arm. There are no fault codes stored. Any ideas? It's changing from a nuisance to a danger now, so I'm keen to get it sorted as soon as possible. Thanks, Nick. -
25th Anniversary of the Airbag 9 Dec 2005 (Forum)
"...the airbag was finally ready for production in December 1980 when it celebrated its world premiere together with another innovation, the seatbelt tensioner, in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class" Quote from an article on UK Motoring Search Engine News (http://tinyurl.com/atb4v ). Leads me to a couple of thoughts: a) Was there other viable safety systems that over time and similar development could have been more effective than the airbag? Has this been a betamax v VHS situation with all manufacturers going along the airbag route? -
Golf Mk3 Dead - Help!!!! 21 Nov 2005 (Forum)
On Monday I drove it about haf a mile pulled over and the engine died. Got a local garage to come out and have a look. After the usual checks (plugs, leads, dist & cap etc etc) they traced the problem - they said - to a faulty coil as there was no spark and replaced it. Unfortunately this didn't cure the problem so they took it to a specialist who put it on two diagnosis machines both of which showed no power coming out of the ECU. -
Is my old Golf a write off?? 1 Oct 2005 (Forum)
What a attempt at swearing deleted . It's something I could never have known when I went to look at the car as it could have been the leads or something causing the probs, but now after getting the insurance and bits and pieces it doesn't look like it will be economical to put right. {Franco, obey the no swear policy, or next time I delete your post, not edit it. -

Focus Tdci Running Problem 30 Jan 2005 (Forum)
2000/w focus 1.8 td di ghia, 89,000miles ,fsh ford only serviced 250 miles ago and fitted new battery leads . drives fine and then for no reason the diesel glow plug light flashes and the car stalls ,but rev counter stays where it is ,stuck in limbo!this happens at lower speeds 30mph ish restarts fine and drives off and does the same thing again usually a mile or so down road. have changed fuel filter and it has made no difference ,yet it will do 70 miles or so without a problem thinking the auction the car came from had put petrol in tank(only a 1/4 tank in car when problems started)i filled it up with diesel to full and this has inproved things but it still breaking down every now and then ,it usually jerks before it dies . i drove the car at 70mph the other day and it went fine but every now and then it popped like some rough fuel was going through but it didnt stall or the light stayed out any ideas ,was her indoors xmas present and she wont drive it anymore!!! -
Difficult 1st Gear VW Golf Mk2 GTI 28 Oct 2004 (Forum)
It's getting a bit worse with time, although it's just been repaired (crash damage to front wing) and now seems quite a bit worse - I used to have no problems on the slope leading to my garage, but my girlfriend had to drive it in in 2nd last night. I have checked gearbox oil, seems OK. I don't know how much resistance there should be, but the engine seems to rock quite easily - is there a chance that knackered engine mounts are a cause? -
Motorway Layouts & Design 25 Aug 2004 (Forum)
(assuming no accidents or breakdowns) flow smoothly at the posted 40mph limit. The two ?access? lanes are backed up constantly. This leads me to assume that it?s the act of leaving and joining motorways that cause the most agro. So my idea, on urban motorways in the UK that suffer jams, is to provide two lanes for local, joining and leaving, and two physically separated lanes for through traffic, perhaps with leaving and joining intersections every three or four junctions or so.. -
High mileage oil for Mk2 Golf GTI? 3 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I am a bit concerned as I have been topping up with some decent semi-synthetic and never thought to question my garage as to what they've been sticking in. A few posts on this forum have lead me to think that perhaps I should be taking a closer interest...... All advice gratefully received Matt
