  • Subaru Legacy/Outback - grey importing 21 Mar 2016 (Forum)
I'll be honest/mercinary here, if say a 2007/8 grey import 3.0 Litre Outback is going to be stung with a £500 VED bill annually as a UK supplied vehicle (with different model name, possibly Bean) would be, then this idea is banished permanently. The difference in Japan prices and those being asked by pro grey importers is huge, obviously they have to make a profit and i'm not being unreasonable.
  • Nissan Juke - Nissan Sunderland - Possible closure? 3 Dec 2020 (Forum)
Twitter on fire tonight as a German auto magazine is reporting that Nissan is set to announce the closure of the Sunderland plant? FWIW, I import from Germany (for the past 26 years) and I've found out today that the minimum charge I will face to make an import from 1st Jan is £55 per shipment, (I will have to make import declarations by law, whether there is any additional duty to pay or not).
  • £4000 used Auris or Civic? 19 Nov 2019 (Forum)
I am looking at Toyota auris 1.6 automatic and Honda Civic 1.8 automatic. Performance and handling are not the most important things for me. I know that in this area civic is better car but what the most important for me are reliability(1000 miles trips), good mpg, and most important comfortable drivers cabin, seats and low noise inside a car.
  • Valid UK Warranty on imports? 31 May 2007 (Forum)
A friend is considering purchasing a Vauxhall Astra from a well known car supermarket. It will have delivery miles, and I believe will be imported from Europe somewhere. The car supermarket carefully words ther small print as saying all cars supplied with balance of manufacturers warranty 'where available'. Does anyone out there know the situation with Vauxhall and honouring these warranties?

  • Import Obstruction 21 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I received a letter today from the chap who imported my car fifteen months ago. He told me that he was now going out of business as his suppliers had informed him that from now on it would take at least ten months to supply him with cars. This would appear to be a blatant way to halt one avenue of cut price cars into the UK.
  • Grey Imports. 7 Sep 2001 (Forum)
I'd like to pose a serious question regarding Grey Imports. I have heard lots of anecdotal revelations such as a lot of the sports cars have been used for street racing, Petrol in Japan is 100 octane, Jap cars aren't rustproofed etc etc. From experience I have found that some of the exotica have indeed been extensively modified in the engine dept and fault finding can be a little tricky sometimes but what really is the score?
  • Which big cheap car? 7 Dec 2010 (Forum)

  • Getting an import through ESVA 26 May 2005 (Forum)
Apparently it was registered on a Q-plate and went through SVA as a 'kit car'. So this gets me wondering....could I import a late-model from Japan and put it through SVA as a 'kit car' and so avoid the bother of ESVA and a model report? If anyone knows anything about (E)SVA and kit car approval I would be most interested.

  • Goo-Net for importing a car from Japan 26 May 2011 (Forum)
Has anyone used the services of http://exchange.goo-net.com/ to import a car ??   Are they a "Kosher" service/Co. - it seems to be a leap of faith that you order a car in Japan via a website and it turns up at a dockyard in a month or so's time after having handed over a few grand via a bank transfer I still cannot makeout from the website if the prices quoted include the shipping cost......
  • Imports how can you tell they are kosher 10 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Forgive my ingnorance but on this subject I don't even know what I don't know.  I am thinking of buying a car imported from Japan it has a UK reg plate but no tax.  The seller also tells me the clocks have been changed to mph. I think these things have to go through some sort of test.  Type approval?
  • importing a cheap merc... 22 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Has anyone gone down this route and can they advise if the benefits of a cheaper car are outweighed by wait, import costs and shipping costs? Or, should I just bite the bullet and buy something from my local merc dealer!? Thanks for the help!

  • Buying from UK mainland and importing to Jersey 22 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Does anyone know the process and the likely fees charged by agencies that claim VAT back on my behalf? I have the rates of duty to import into Jersey as well as costs to register the car here (although registering is unesessary if the car is in the island for more than 6 months but less than 12 months.) On the basis that I do not sell the car for 12 months after importing into Jersey and subsequently bringing it into the UK.
  • SEAT Leon TDi SE / Importers 27 Jan 2003 (Forum)
And the Leon is considerably bigger and prettier than the Ibiza. Unfortunately its also a couple of grand more. So I've been looking at importing one. Seems like I can get one imported for about £11500, which is a lot cheaper than the £15000 the salesman quoted for a new one with metallic paint. Anyone able to reccomend a good importer for SEATs?
  • Main dealer import nightmare 6 Jan 2004 (Forum)
The reply I received went along the lines of: " Sorry sir...we've checked our system and I'm afraid that your car appears to be an import (which wasn't known by us when we sold you the car). The original owner who part exchanged the car with us signed a declaration stating that the car wasn't an import but we have since found out from the original main dealer (DEALER 'B') who supplied the car that it was an import.....so you do not have the balance of the 3yr warranty" I've complained to the General Manager at the dealership who has agreed to honour the remainder of my warranty but I am now stuck with an imported car when I was told at the time that it was a UK car.
