  • Timing belt failure - can I claim against the manufacturer? 13 Apr 2015 (Ask HJ)
We bought a secondhand Renault Grand Scenic in December 2012 for £8800 (we were hoping to spend around £5,00 but convinced ourselves that spending more...
  • SEAT/VW tdi pd VW505.01 oil follow up 21 Nov 2004 (Forum)
As a result, these are the options I've been offered: 1.An oil cange to the correct oil and a free 4th year warranty. 2.A full refund of my money. 3.A brand new car, and I pay the difference. 4.Try to locate another used car of same price, age, mileage etc. Option 4, apparently, is as likely as finding rocking horse s***, as used 1.4 tdi's are very rare. Option 3 will cost me loads, option 2 leaves me with no car and loads of hassle, option one leaves my with doubt and worry (I planned on keeping this car for a few years).
  • Do I have a right to keep my Cat N car? 9 Apr 2018 (Ask HJ)
My car was hit on the road outside recently. The driver got out and ran off, but he was insured so the police have taken his car until he reappears. The...
  • Ford Fiesta (2008) - Fiesta - overheating, radiator leak...gasket gone? 15 Mar 2013 (Forum)
For reasons which I still don't know - and won't go into further here - after several hours the RAC advised that they couldn't attend my breakdown. By this point I was alone at 11pm on a Sunday evening, in a remote place in the freezing cold - so I took a chance and drove the car back to Inveraray.  It had been sitting cold for a few hours so it didn't appear to overheat on that small journey.
  • bought a car. Ripped off. 22 Mar 2010 (Forum)
The car had been purchased for £2300, so this failure has effectively written the car off leaving us obviously in a horrible position, without our money, without transport, and with a useless car outside which we can no way afford to repair.
  • Audi TT: Difference of a pinion 21 Jan 2010 (Ask HJ)
My Audi TT 3.2 Quattro broke down with an almost complete loss of power on a dual carriageway in late December during the freezing weather. The car just...
  • Mini First 1.4 M/Y 2010 - Advice on low impact collision learner driver 2 May 2024 (Forum)
There were no obvious cracks or bends. My son's car sustained very light scratches to the nearside plastic wheel arch, as it rubbed against her car when reversing, but other than that no damage whatsover. Now... here's where it gets interesting: As this is my son's first car, and he's a learner on a provisional licence, and has literally only just started driving on Saturday, we suggested to the driver of the Mercedes that we would be open to not going through insurance given that the damage appears to be so minor.
  • Renault Megane (1999 - 2002) - 01 1.6 inlet valves bent on test drive after newca 17 Feb 2010 (Forum)
My questions are 1) Are they incompetent or are they just very unlucky 2) Is is likely that the pulley was faulty casuing the car to break down and damage the inlet valves or it is more likely they fittled the cam belt wrong or didn't lock the engine correctly. 3) Should/would they have replaced the cam shaft oil seal when the replaced the inlet valves 4) What is now causing the car to idle poorly and oil/stop lights come on when breaking.
  • Faulty used car - can I demand a refund? 8 Sep 2013 (Ask HJ)
Last year I bought a Volkswagen Polo from an authorised dealer. The car was an ex-demonstrator and had just 7000 miles on the clock. Over the past few...
  • Have you heard of many dash failures in Renault Scenics and Espaces? 5 Aug 2010 (Ask HJ)
The electronic dashboard in my 2004 Renault Espace went faulty on a motorway, leaving the car incapable of being driven with no speedo or fuel gauge. A...
  • Any From The Guardian - Electric car short term lease 16 Mar 2021 (Forum)
As with Netflix, the contract automatically renews each month unless you cancel, meaning that as long as you keep paying, the car stays outside your house. Included in the monthly fee is the insurance, maintenance and servicing, tyres, breakdown cover, the London congestion charge registration – and charging at 11,000 public chargers.
  • SEAT Toledo - My new car 17 Sep 2018 (Forum)
A family member has just taken ownership of a 2015 Fabia and I was frustrated to see how easy it was to update both the maps, and system firmware, using the online Skoda portal. This free service is attached to the car for 3 years and is available for SEAT in Europe! Warranty – The SEAT warranty is equivalent to the Skoda new car warranty (3 years / 60K miles), but I was disappointed to see the breakdown cover only applies for 2 years, whereas it is 3 years for a Skoda.
  • My diesel car doesn't have a DPF, why has it failed the new MoT emission rules? 12 Jul 2018 (Ask HJ)
My Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI has failed its MoT due to excessively high smoke. It was registered on 3 July 2008 and the MoT tester says it has failed the new...
  • BMW M3 CS - Multiple Faults from purchase, No Help from Dealer 15 Jun 2013 (Forum)
I call the warranty company and they say that calipers are not covered under warranty. As such I duly call Beck Evans workshop who ask me to bring the car in but any work will be charged for . Now, as any competant person will confirm its not advisable to drive a car with a seized caliper at all, let alone 30mins up the motorway.
  • Unhappy with main dealer-how to proceed? 13 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I'd also like to suggest the solution which I think is fair, something along the lines of either: a) Get the car drivable from its current state for what was my budget, £700 (i.e. do the fuel pump, leave everything else). This allows me to use my car, and get the remaining items done in a sensible order elsewhere, for a lot less money.
  • Do I need to change all four tyres at the same time on a BMW xDrive model? 4 May 2023 (Ask HJ)
We have a BMW 18d. The dealer says although it is an X drive, in normal driving 100% of the power is sent to the front and the rear is only used when extra...
  • Citroen DS5 - My Road Test Report 13 Mar 2015 (Forum)
The chrome “blade” which runs from the A pillar to the leading edge of the front wing looked particularly good on this car which was finished in black. The DS5 looks good from the rear too with a squat stance set off by the roof spoiler and what look like twin chrome exhaust pipes. In fact, one is a “dummy” to balance the look of the car.
  • Skoda Yeti - My Yeti(s) 25 Mar 2018 (Forum)
I was approached by numerous people in car-parks / when re-filling at petrol stations, asking either what it was, or how I was finding it. I've owned a number of cars (>100) and more people asked about my Yeti (in 2009) than any other car.
  • New car 20 May 2004 (Forum)
It always takes 6-7 weeks to get your number plates from the LTO. That was OK provided you drove around with your registration papers in the car. You got a thing called a conduction sticker to show your registration was being done. Now with all the security (election, terrorist etc) cars without license plates are banned from driving. So you have this new car and nowhere to go in it, G he knows a couple of big cheeses in the City Hall, says he can get a letter from Mayor's office saying car is on government business not to delay.
  • Driving the Amalfi Coast and Naples 5 Jun 2007 (Forum)
The only bit of driving in Naples that did get to me was returning the hired car to the airport – and here’s some advice: allow an hour to get from the motorway to check-in. The distance is small, but I didn’t see a single “car hire return” sign and, as I had picked up the car in darkness, it was hard to remember where the compound was.
