  • Help! Honda Brake Caliper 10 Aug 2005 (Forum)
It's the rear brake calipers which have disc brakes. It's a single piston and is the type that you have to press and turn clockwise,(best done with a special tool) to retract the piston if you want to fit new pads. The problem is I had to fit a new one some time ago.

  • Engine braking, and how to prolong disc life. 21 Sep 2019 (Forum)
And in automatics there is not much engine braking effect.   Personally, I coast where possible for maximum fuel economy.  Brake pads only cost a tiny fraction of a penny per mile. In Scotland, this meant that I often had to replace the brake disks for successive MOT's, due to "visble rust".

  • 2000 Toyota Hiace 2.4D LWB - toyota hiace brake problem - advice appreciated! 14 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Dear All Looking for a recommended independant Toyota or brake specilaist in Bournemouth / Soton area. Any tips appreciated. This is the problem/question I sent in: Had to pull up sharpish yesterday in my 2000 Hiace van after a dodderer pulled out, brakes felt rubbish and only just stopped in time.
  • Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - 03 1.4 TDCi - Vibrations while braking 7 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Is this correct? The other issue is also to do with the brakes. Over the past few months I've began to feel some kind of feedback through the brake pedal that has gradually gotten worse to the point where I can feel the steering wheel vibrating when the brakes are applied.
  • Nissan Primera (1990 - 1996) - brake noise 15 Sep 2008 (Forum)
The best way to describe the noise is like rubbing a wet finger round the top of a wine glass (only in a much lower pitch). The problem only seems to appear when the brakes are warm/hot and the steering is in a straight line or turning to the right. Turning left or placing your foot on the brake pedal, even just lightly, stops the noise. Before the pads were changed I cleaned the brake disks with brake cleaning solvent, this appeared to reduce the noise for a while.
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace (1998 - 2010) - 1998 1.8i - Engine cutting out under braking 26 Feb 2008 (Forum)
However sometimes driving 100miles on the motorway not using the brakes, the engine will cut out again on first application of the brakes (eg slip road or traffic) in 5th gear at 2000+rpm, fully warmed up engine etc. The car will also struggles intermittently on start up (takes 2/3 goes to start sometimes), and when started just the act of sticking it into reverse clutch down will cut out (same as when tapping the brakes first time).
  • 'Excessive' brake pedal travel (Polo) 22 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Had the Polo in for a service and MOT on Friday, and it failed on 4 'excessively corroded/deteriorated' brake flexi pipes. Naturally, I had these replaced, and to do this, the brake system was bled. When I picked the car up at 5pm, all was well apart from the brake pedal now has an 'abnormally' long travel.
  • Civic brake / side lights fault 7 Feb 2005 (Forum)
with sidelights ON, brake lights are always ON, but get marginally brighter when brake pedal pressed. Dashboard lighting works as normal. I'm guessing there is an earth fault - probably where the rear sidelights and brake lights share a ground.
  • Peugeot 306 1.4 W Reg 4 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Hey Guys, I really need help on this one, its getting expensive but driving me MAD !!!!!!!!!!!!1. After about 5,000 Miles the brakes started to become very squeeky. I took it into Kwik Fit who advised the pads to be changed. I handed over my hard earned cash and within 500 miles the brakes started to squeek again. At my 10,000 service they noticed that the brakes had hit the min mark and advised a change of pads and to lubricate the caliper.
  • Golf brake failure 27 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Got an anguished call last Sunday night from my wife who had stopped the company Mk4 Golf in a pub car park 40 miles from home because a red light with an exclamation mark was blinking at her from the dash and chiming while it flashed. It was the car telling her that the brake fluid was low. This is obviously the car's revenge for us talking previously about a sporty coupe while it was listening! It was a filthy night and I was alcoholically unfit to drive. My faith in the design of twin-circuit brakes was complete so I asked Madame to drive home at reduced speed and avoid using the brakes unless necessary.
