Which lane for roundabout? 2 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Near to where I live there is a dual carriageway leading to a roundabout. There are no road markings to tell you which lane to be in. The signpost in advance of the roundabout shows 3 exits, all of which are single carriageways. The first is a major A road with the road being shown as wider on the roundabout drawing. -
Dodgy salesman!! 28 Apr 2007 (Forum)
It was coming up to two years old and he said "get it serviced now and again in a a couple of months and that will validate the warranty" So according to him, you can get it serviced 10 months late, then again bang on two years and all is well ." Not having a car serviced will only lead to the loss of the third year dealer warranty. The two year manufacturers warranty remains valid regardless!" Now, he is either very ignorant or just a blatant liar. I wonder how many people are suckered into buying a car. -

Renault Megane 1.4 Not Starting Right 19 Mar 2007 (Forum)
It then got worse and wouldn't start at all, even though it sounded like it was turning over properly, it just wouldn't start up at all :-( I bump started it and took it down to the local garage, but they couldn't find a fault. They said they checked the Battery, Starter Motor, Leads and Spark Plugs and they all seemed ok, it was just as though a spark wasn't reaching the engine? So they reckon it'll need to go back to a renault dealer :-( Anyone have any ideas? If you do get it started, once you switch it off and back on again, it'll start straight away, but if you leave it more than an hour or so, it goes back to being extremely hard to start. -
Hosepipe ban poses danger to motorists 27 Feb 2006 (Forum)
No doubt some members of the public will now think that it's ok not to wash their cars because that bloke on the radio said a hosepipe would lead to this and he was a motoring journalist, so he must be right. Even I, who puts his car through a car wash once every six months if it's lucky, am capable of getting a bucket and sponge and cleaning the vital bits. -
Alloy cylinder head material 9 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Of all the cars, the V70 is the one with the best 'weather proofed' under bonnet area too, with good rubber seals along the leading edge. Would love to know why, as I would have thought alloy components where extreme heat or loading is not a factor would have pretty well the same 'lowest cost' alloy materials, regardless of manufacturer. -
rover 111i noisy,no go & drinks petrol 6 Dec 2005 (Forum)
The problem is its misfiring terribly, it really sounds like the exhaust is blowing (its not, just replaced in April) it has no go at all. I bought new plugs and leads last week, its no better. My friend has exactly the same car which she's scrapped as the head gasket has gone and she said I can help myself to anything, so I've just been round there and changed the distributor cap (couldn't get the rotor arm off) still no better and changed the coil. -
Mondeo diesel start problem 26 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The car will turn over fine but wont catch. This morning I tried so much I drained the battery. I put jump leads on it from the mrs car and after two attemps...yippee, its alive!! I'd like to know what you guy and gals think before I start spending money for no reason. Might I need a new battery, could it have something wrong with the starter motor, could the feed to the glow plugs be bad? -
VW Golf 1.4cl 1992 - cold starting probs 24 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Sounds like it's firing on less than all four, but clears itself and the problem never reappears after the car warms up. Plugs and lead and dis cap look OK. Replaced fuel and air filters about 12 months ago. Top of carb looks clean and none of the hoses seem to have leaks. Tail pipe is a bit sooty. Took it to (competent) garage a while ago before this problem started, and had them check it over because fuel consumption had climbed. -

Foot pump 2 socket sets - 1/2 and 1/4 inch drives Small tool kit Set of alum keys Security screw bits and holder Roof bars Ratchet straps and ropes Warning triangle 4 cardboard bottle carriers (for the next trip to France) Car rug for picnics 4 large towels (used for stopping items rubbing or moving) Screen wash concentrate Deicer Car polish Interior plastic polish Roll of kitchen paper Set of spare light bulbs and fuses Set of jump leads Torch Plastic fabric sheet (for dirty items or roadside repairs) Umbrella Thinking about it, I seem prepared for almost anything. Most of these items have been used recently and I would not dream of removing them. -
G Reg VW Golf losing power slowing down 10 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Hi there Last Saturday we had to put the car into the garage to have the rotar arm, leads etc changed out as it was having problems starting. The car now starts great, however, when slowing down from speed (ie on the motorway) and coming off into slower roads, junctions etc, it splutters and struggles and eventually dies. -
Ford Fiesta Mk 4 - What\'s wrong? 6 Dec 2004 (Forum)
every time I\'ve stopped, the engine has stopped. It doesn\'t always do this and admittedly, after about 5 minutes, NEVER does it leading me to believe it could be temperature related. Also, the car has started to hold high revs even on \'idle\' so instead of idling at 1000 revs, it does it at 2. Again, this is occasional and I\'m not too bothered about that because my Dad\'s Focus did exactly the same thing and then stopped. -
Ford Focus - brakes...are they working? 2 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Brakes - as you may have guessed is the problem I've decided on today. The car does stop. The brakes don't seem to grind leading me to believe it isn't the pads. I wouldn't even say there was excessive travel in the pedal - nor is it spongy but it doesn't seem to have the bite it used to have. Before you say "pads wear down" I know this. -
Too Porky to Park 26 Oct 2004 (Forum)
As a fan of the current model Ford Focus, I question whether we need these continually larger vehicles and where will this eventually lead. Manufacturers are claiming it is necessary to provide ever larger crumple zones and more rigid crash structures along with more interior space, but if this trend continues we are all going to end up driving Hummer size vehicles that will not only cause further urban congestion, but will not even fit into the average size garage. -
Problem Escort 22 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Also occasionally the engine will rev at between 2500-3500 when the vehicle is at rest without the pedal depressed & sometimes cuts-out with the pedal at rest when approaching roundabouts. The vehicle has been taken to four garages & the plugs, leads & electronic coil unit have been replaced but the problem continues & the garages are unable to help. It has been suggested that engine sludge is the problem but lubricant does not help. Can anyone help. -
Roadside 'TAG' Boxes 28 Jul 2004 (Forum)
The road is a 40 limit, and the box is probably 250m away from a traffic light controlled crossroads. I haven't seen any other boxes like this on the other roads leading into the crossroads, or anywhere else. Does anyone know what this kind of box does? I wonder if it's a mechanism for emergency services to force the lights to change as they approach from the direction it faces (have heard about these things in the USA)- rush hour queues can easily back up past the point where the box is installed). -
TV show "can you make $$ in used cars" 26 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Then you have the fundamental flaw of the program that you buy and sell at auction. If they sold privately they might make more money, but maybe they thought this could lead to some bad press if they sold a lemon to a nice old granny. Anyone else see this show? The episode I saw they had a bright yellow Saxo with an 'orrible yellow spoiler on the back. -
Pug 306 CL and Fusebox 30 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I know that the wiring looms from strut to door are common culprits but I\'ve examined these and they look A1 I\'m sure I remember having a similar problem a couple of years back and I solved it by fiddling with fuses etc. Which leads on to my next question; -what the hell is SHUNT? In my Haynes manual fuse 8 and fuse 23 are SHUNT and I have no idea what this apart from a mix of two popular words uttered whilst trying to figure out my locking problem. -
U.S. Car part prices 8 Mar 2004 (Forum)
(I have the owners manual so by default will try to get some of the recommended ones). People recommend Vauxhall original HT leads, which are dear, am I likely to be able to get them over there? (Again, part number would be handy!) Also for the Focus 1.8 petrol (Zetec) - any special recommendations, plugwise? And can anyone suggest any other service parts for either car on which I can save a few bob, without overstepping my baggage allowance? -
Engine Insulation 2 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Engineers in Germany have found locking heat inside the engine can greatly improve performance. The findings could lead to engines being completely clad in blocks of expanded plastic foam, The Engineer magazine reports. By reducing heat loss, plastic wraps could theoretically cut fuel consumption by 5% in the summer and up to 10% in the winter.
