  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.8 Coolant Leak 14 Oct 2009 (Forum)
My question really is, anyone heard of this happening, is it something fixable with one of those additives (not keen to do that but £170 is £170). I'm sure I'll stick to getting it done. It has been a very reliable car apart from the two breakdowns (other time was similar symptoms but was the water pump).
  • Weekend observations 7 Jul 2003 (Forum)
At start of roadworks on M6 at St Helens exit, the sign "Roadworks monitored by CCTV. In event of breakdown, stay with vehicle." This sign was attached to a SPECS camera. False sense of security? All in all, a very interesting journey. Well, for me at least. I'll get me coat.

  • Urgent advice following accident please! 25 Sep 2006 (Forum)
The car was returned to our local garage on a breakdown lorry. My fully comprehensive insurance premium was in the region of £725, with my husband and daughter as named drivers. Obviously if we claim on the insurance we will lose at least 2 years of my 4 years?
  • MR2; R.I.P. 26 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Her insurance company have admitted full liability on her behalf, little else they could do in the circumstances, so of course I have scope to negotiate on the price for the car. I am now looking at uninsured losses and would welcome anybody's thought on what I could claim. My thoughts so far include a 'nominal' daily charge for the inconvenience of having an undriveable vehicle obstructing my driveway whilst awaiting the insurance assessment ( Mrs Steptoe elected to have the car recovered here, presumably because this happens with the all breakdowns!

  • Saab 9-3 2002-2012 - CIM & Airbag & Steering Control & Locking Faults 1 Feb 2017 (Forum)
After some internet research, I determined that the most likely cause was breakdown of the rotary coupler (aka clockspring) behind the steering wheel.   These cars use a canbus system and the switches have differing resistances so that they can be connected to the electronics with fewer wires.

  • Smart Roadster (2002 - 2006) - Recently purchased car has persistent fault 27 Mar 2014 (Forum)
About 6 weeks ago, my wife purchased a Smart Roadster from a well known car supermarket, which provides a 30 day warranty. Along with this we purchased a 5 star warranty from a well known breakdown organisation. All bases covered, I thought. Two weeks ago, and the car demonstrated a fault, 2 days outside the 30 day warranty.
  • Ford Mondeo - New Ford Mondeo - Engine Advice 6 Jun 2015 (Forum)
I would love to throw this open to you all to hear what people think, I have only ever bought secondhand what I can afford but this will be bought as an inheritance and will be kept for 5/10 years as I do not tend to change my car often, my current one I have had for 5 years already. Thanks Paul

  • Alfa 147 Selespeed 10 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Hi HJ - great site: my favourite web car resource. However, I disagree with you on one point. I was looking at your comments on the Alfa 147 Selespeed in Car-by-Car Breakdown (love the title!) and you list it as \"not a great drive\" presented as a fact rather than an opinion.

  • Peugeot 206 - Labour costs 7 Jul 2015 (Forum)
My girlfriend had a clutch failure last year and a new 3 part clutch pack was installed on the car on 25 May 2014.  Fast forward a little over 13 months and she suffered a breakdown on her way home from work. The clutch pedal went straight to the floor as she stopped to give way at a roundabout.
  • Ford Focus - Please check if this garage bill is too high 2 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Hi, my car was overheating and I took it to a local independent garage two weeks back and today I got a call saying it is repaired and emailed me the invoice. here is the breakdown. Please let me know if it is reasonable. apparently the head gasket is blown up and other parts also needed replacement due to this according to the mechanic. their customer service was very poor and they were very rude whenever I called them to get an update. they gave very high estimate initially and I made a mistake of not getting quotes from other garages.
  • Rover 25 - Used car bought with no warranty offered at sale. 23 Aug 2014 (Forum)
After phoning the garage and being told they would not fix it due to the age of the vehicle I waited for the breakdown truck and the mechanic told me that my gearbox was "knackered" which explained the gears doing the hokey-cokey every so often. I phoned the dealer the next day after I had got over the shock and was told that due to having bought the car without a warranty I would not be getting my money back.
