  • Towing suggestions 13 Mar 2002 (Forum)
The sierra is a super tow car but is now looking tatty and I am thinking of a change. Does any have any advise as I'm thinking about trying an automatic, eg honda concerto 1.6 or mitsubishi lancer 1.6/1.8. Will I hit any gearbox problems even if I fit an extra gearbox cooler.
  • Cavalier Auto transmission life 25 Nov 2001 (Forum)
No one I speak to in the trade seems to know what sort of life expectancy I can expect from my Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 8v automatic transmission. Most agree that the engine can easily go to 200,000 , but many say my current 130,000 may be pushing it a bit for a vauxhall auto box! Has anyone experienced failure around this mileage and does anyone have experiences where their auto box (cavalier 2.0) lasted significantly longer.
  • emissions for TDI vehicles 9 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Can someone tell me why the emissions for the automatic versions are so much higher than on the manual versions. As the only difference is the auto box the raising of the VED catorgory by 2 levels in most cases seems a large increase. I guess the same thing applies to petrol as well but what causes the emissions to be so much higher, particularly as we now have tiptronic boxes which are surely similar to manual boxes. please enlighten me.
  • Vauxhall Omega idle speed 16 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Mine will not return to a proper speed when the engine is hot. I drops to around 1200 to 1500 rpm and with an automatic box this is a problem because the car wants to travel at 30mph on its own. The Vauxhall dealer has had three attempts to rectifiy this problem and it;s still there. I am aware of another (manual) Omege with the same problem.
  • Rover 820 question 26 Jul 2001 (Forum)
I own a 1988 Rover 820 SE Automatic. I know that the engine needs resetting after the battery is taken off or loses its charge- I just can't remember exactly how to do this. I know it involves starting the enginne and waiting for the fan to come on- then performing some sort of operation with the gas pedal.
  • Audi 80 Brown autobox fluid 16 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Hi, I am looking at a G reg Audi 80 2.0 E auto with 73,000 on the clock and FSH. The automatic gearbox is filled way over max mark and fluid is brown (engine up to temp). Cooling fans stay on for long after engine switched off. Drives well but for slight whine. Any advice gratefully received, especially on the autobox.
  • Renault 5(1.4)-intermittent problem 2 May 2001 (Forum)
I have an intermittent problem with my 1996 Renault 5, 1.4 (C3J engine with Electronic Ignition). When the car returns to idle the car nearly stalls, then the revs pickup automatically and everything is fine. This only occurs when the engine has been run for a few miles. The car has covered 35,000 miles and is fully serviced. Can anybody offer any suggestions as to what may be causing this problem ?
  • 7 seats but dont like MPVs 1 Apr 2001 (Forum)
I'm looking for a car with 7 seats for family running around and the occaisional longer trip, but dont like big MPVs as they seem a bit van like. I've got about £8-12k to spend and it has to be an automatic. My thoughts to date: Vauxhall Zafira, Peugeot 406 estate, maybe an old Mercedes E-class estate. Any thoughts? Who else has made 7 seat estates? Thanks - Robin
  • MG4 - Driving school EV 11 Jun 2023 (Forum)
I was a bit surprised at first but then it made perfect sense. The majority of  new cars are now automatic and many young drivers will never drive a manual and  may even be looking at an EV as their first car. Also cheap running costs for the school as driving school cars don't do huge daily mileages and a lot of it is in towns so ideal EV territory.

  • First time driver car insurance 18 Oct 2022 (Forum)
So far the lowest I could get was £1100 for a Hyundai i10 2009 model or kia picanto 2009 model, that too with the black box installed. I'm checking quotes for different cars automatically through AutoTrader website linked to comparethemarket, is there a better way to get cheaper car insurance quotes?   Thanks in advance.

  • MINI Clubman - MOT minor defect 18 Jan 2020 (Forum)
The crack hasn't changed since and I've got limited time and money to get a new windscreen sorted before the MOT deadline. My question is if I put it in for MOT without replacing the screen will it be an automatic failure or would I just get another minor defect?
  • Ford - Ford's dual-clutch woes 15 Oct 2019 (Forum)
https://www.autoblog.com/2019/07/11/ford-focus-fiesta-dual-clutch-automatic-problems-before-after-production/?ncid=edlinkusauto00000016 The link on that page to the Detroit Free Press can only be accessed if you have a VPN, I believe. Doesn't leave Ford in a good light.
  • Toyota Aygo - Rolling Down Hill Even Though in Reverse Gear 19 Jun 2018 (Forum)
I was surprised to see the car continue to roll forward, even though reverse gear was selected. Obviously the handbrake wasn't applied. Is this normal (I have been driving automatics for too long)?
  • advice on a car 15 Jun 2018 (Forum)
Hi, I need some advice on potential new car. I have a budget max 16k ideally 14k. Need a diesel doing 15-20k year, automatic max 70k mileage. 5 door, descent boot space hatchback/saloon. I think an Audi /Bmw would be my preference. My top choice is A5 hatchback 2012 onwards facelift 2.0 s line. I was thinking of alternatives eg bmw 3 Series.
  • Sprinter 313 CDI - Speed Limiter 20 May 2018 (Forum)
Same uphill too. How does this type of limiter work? Is it some mechanical device within the gearbox? They're automatics too...dropping it down a few cogs makes the revs go almost to the limiter at 62 MPH but again the speed doesn't change (I thought it might have been a speed limiter that works on revs, but obviously not).
  • Vauxhall Corsa D - Belt/Pulley Area Noise on BCA AA Report 5 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I'm interested in a 22,000 mile 2012 Corsa 1.4 Automatic - the car is at auction and the report mentions noise from the engine bay area and specifically "Belt/Pulley Area Noise." Is it possible to confirm what this is likely to be and the cost. Am I right in thinking a new auxilary belt should cure this?
  • mercades sprinter - Anti-freeze change- DEF button? 22 Sep 2014 (Forum)
I wish to renew the anti-freeze in my 2001 sprinter before winter. The manual says: if it has an automatic climatisation system fitted......' (presume this means air-con) press the DEF button. As my vehicle does have air-con i presume it would have a DEF button, but cant find anyone who knows what this button looks like (or what it's for)- can anyone help please?
