  • Does my Peugeot 407 SW have a brake vacuum pump fault? 16 Aug 2010 (Ask HJ)

  • Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - mk3 1.1i - MOT advisory on brake efficiency 20 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I received an advisory on my MOT that the brake efficiency (service brake) was low (58%). Looking at how this is tested 58% seems slightly worrying... The brakes have never been the greatest (standard fiesta behaviour) but recently I have been noticing that the braking is a little variable: sometimes when I press the pedal it feels a little soft and the braking is not as good as it should be (but adequate for normal stopping), releasing the pedal and reapplying normally gives a better result.

  • Pug 508 - Automatic Gearbox advice 9 Oct 2022 (Forum)
Hello any automatic gearbox experts. Can someone please explain the connection between brakes and automatic gearboxes. I have a 6 speed Aisin box and I’m getting a jolt. It seems to me that if I have had my foot on the brake whilst say at a junction in D when I take my foot off the brake the car jolts forward.
  • Volkswagen Golf Est Diesel Auto 2011 1598cc - ABS/ESP/BRAKE ISSUE 14 Aug 2022 (Forum)
Car has done 99k. FSH with recent full service. I just posted another issue but this is completely separate Brakes were squealing so took to garage. They replaced front pads and discs. Took it home, brakes still squealing so went back after a week and they cleaned the rear brakes. Also had an MOT at the same time which passed.
  • N/A - overheating discs 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
I believe that most drivers are inclined to sit on the brakes so why is the problem not  widespread? HJ advises to use the cars hand brake or hold system as the rear brakes do not heat up as much as the fronts.  However the owner has also had the rears replaced under warranty!
  • 1997 Peugeot 106 1.1 - Adjusting back brake drums 8 May 2018 (Forum)
When I jack the back up and turn the back wheel there is no resistance from the brakes. When driving the brakes seem okish, (I have got used to them) but are not hard. Could it be a dodgy cylinder? Any tips would be welcome, as I am agog with googlin' :) Please see the pictures of both back brakes here http://s103.photobucket.com/user/liammcl_2006/library/Pre-MOT%202014?
  • Honda Accord UK (1998 - 2003) - 01 2.0 Brake Pipe Failure 20 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I took my car in for an MOT on Tuesday and it needed to have the front brake pads replaced in order to pass. When I took it out for a drive on the Wednesday evening I was careful to be gentle with the new pads, aware that they needed to bed in. However, by the end of a 7 mile journey, the brakes were starting to feel a little spongy, then the pedal travel started to increase and by the time I had parked up the brakes had gone completely.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - Mysterious MOT Failure 10 May 2008 (Forum)
On my Mk4 1.25 LX Fiesta's MOT failure sheet, listed "Handbrake and rear brakes weak". Before retest, put handbrake 3/4 on and tried to push car on the flat, would not budge an inch and no creaking noises either. During repairs they replaced the rear Flex brake hose and bled the rear brakes.
  • Fiesta Mk3 Brakes 16 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I recently changed the brake master cylinder on my 1991 Fiesta 1.6S. It was a pretty straightforward job and I was feeling quite smug about having saved myself a few quid on garage fees. The trouble is, the brakes have felt rubbish ever since.
  • Mk4 Fiesta brakes 17 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Recently the brakes in my car have been grinding when I first apply the footbrake after pulling away. I drive the car around 120miles every day and this has only been happening for the past month or so. The grinding dies down after a few braking events, but there is a definite rumble thereafter when I apply the brakes.
  • Pug 306 Brake problems 14 Sep 2001 (Forum)
For the last thousand miles or so, when driving the car on a slight bend (under 1/8 steering wheel turn to the left) I am getting a whistling sound from what appears to be the brakes. The whistling stops when, a) I gently touch the brake pedal b) the car straightens up There is also squealing from the brakes on normal braking. On a previous service I had asked for this to be checked but was told this is usual for the non-asbestos pad compound and some anti-squeal paste was applied.
