  • Should I pay £650 for a new air conditioning switch that failed whilst the car was in the garage? 12 Aug 2010 (Ask HJ)
My car went into a local garage for a replacement radiator. When I collected the car the air conditioning wasn't working and the next day a coolant warning...

The coolant temperature used to reach the middle of the normal range in about 4 miles and stay there, except when coasting downhill for a significant period. Recently, I have found it can only reach and maintain the normal temperature if speeds of 55-60mph are maintained and drops away rapidly as I slow down.
  • Peugeot 405 Diesel (1988 - 1996) - 93 1.9 head gasket 1 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I've done so much to it that I want to hang on to it if I can. I think the head gasket is going as it loses coolant with no obvious leaks and also pressurises the cooling system - fluid sometimes pours out under pressure AFTER the engine has cooled when I remove the radiator cap. The oil and coolant are both clean and I have just done a 330 mile round trip running like a bird.
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 1993 1.4i overheating - driving me nuts! 23 Jan 2008 (Forum)
. * After few mins therostat must have opened * Expansion tank suddenly overflowed with hot water and dribbled out all over engine * Turned ignition off * Topped up with water * Put cap back on and idled it again for a few minutes * Temperature went up nearly to the red again * Let it cool down for a bit then idled again with fan disconnected until approaching red again * Radiator hot at top and bottom, and hoses hot. Seems like the coolant IS circulating, guess thats why coolant overflowed suddenly with cap open. So I'm stumped, as far as I can see the fan, thermostat, pump and airlock situation is ok, but it definitely overheats, it bubbles and sounds like it's boiling if allowed to get right up to the red.
  • Mondeo head gasket 25 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The car is 10 years old with 115000 on the clock. 2.0 Ghia Auto zetec engine... My problem now? The garage reported that they carried out a test on the coolant reservoir, which indicated "exhaust gases" in the coolant. I remember seeing other people mention this test elsewhere on this forum. This indicates a problem with the head gasket? The car is now still running hot, the pressure cap on the reservoir is constantly releasing steam (when up to temp) and I don't know what to do for the best.

s the head gasket or a crack in the head and it?s time to rip the engine to pieces. However, there is no oil in the coolant, the coolant level has stayed stable, the oil looks like it could do with a good change but there is no mayonnaise or froth. The engine runs fine (smooth, linear power) and isn?t down on power. The engine doesn?

  • How does this work? Omega 19 Feb 2003 (Forum)
OK so breifly, when compared to my first version :o) 2.0 16V Omega what function does the engine coolant serve to the throttle housing, I find it hard to believe it could output any noticable heat to the housing, hence to the temperature of the air coming into the engine, given that it only briefly mates with the throttle housing.
  • Ford focus 2001 1.6 - Fan not kicking in 11 Sep 2019 (Forum)

  • Astra G smoking 1 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Runs fine until the engine gets to 90 degrees then I get a white cloud on pulling off in 1st and a smaller cloud when accelerating hard.  There's no massive oil loss or coolant drop, no mayo on the oil cap.  Am I looking at a head gasket fail, piston fail or something else?   Any help on this is welcome as currently is lining up for a scrapp age if I can't get this sorted.
  • Ford Fiesta - Which Fiesta? 22 Aug 2014 (Forum)
First off thanks to all who responded to my post regarding the saga of the coolant loss on my wife's Peugeot 207. The garage reckoned it was a faulty temperature sensor which they changed. We now wait to see if they have in fact fixed it. However we have both lost faith in the car and my wife wants to go back to diesel power.
  • Rover 25 2003 - Engine oil tapping clicking noise 10 Jul 2014 (Forum)
I hear this clicking/tapping noise when I let go off the accelerator pedal each time. Any ideas on what this could be? Is it because oil is not up to max mark? Everything looks ok, coolant up to max mark, no signs of oil leak or leak at cyclinder head, etc.

  • Vauxhall Corsa - Waterpump failure on my corsa 10 Dec 2012 (Forum)
Hi, 10 days ago I took my vauxsall corsa into my local main dealer in Birkenhead. I had a full service, engine flush and coolant flush. Last week it broke down and the dealer have told me the engine has burnt out, due to a faulty waterpump which has caused the engine to overheat. The car had no problems 10days ago before they did this work and now I'm left with a bill for a new engine?
  • All - Flat out in fifth 13 Mar 2012 (Forum)
I had a good blast down the M3 last night in the Berlingo, took the long way home and kept my foot to the floor to give it a good Italian tune up after lots of town work. As fifth is an overdrive the revs never go over about 4000, as long as the oil/coolant is topped up and timing belt is good is there anyway this is bad for the engine? The temperature gauge didn't move and it felt much peppier afterwards. I know diesels like to be worked, but I want to know where work becomes abuse!
  • golf 2.0 ltr gti, 54 reg. - water loss 12 Oct 2011 (Forum)
only half the message did not go on first time, a friend flushed the system out and filled it with the correct vw g12 coolant,on inspection at first there was no signs of a leak any where, the reason i asked my friend to have a look was because after the first top up the water in the expansion tank was a dirty greyish black, but when it was flushed through there was no signs of any dirt, only done 63,000 miles, there also is a lack of oomph that was there before, any ideas people.
