  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.9TDi white smoke on cold startup. 25 Sep 2013 (Forum)
The outside temperature doesn't seem to make much different (maybe slightly less smoke on a hotter day) Its a dark white, maybe white/blue smoke and smells very sickly and strongly of diesel, the smoke lasts about 10 - 20 seconds, a little gentle reving gets rid of it quickly. The car always fires on the first crank whether engine is hot or cold, however it will run rough for a few minutes before settling out. Outside temp at this time of the year, ranges from 10 - 20 degree C. So far the car has had the following work: glowplugs replaced and wiring checked - all show btwn 11.6V and 12.3V new wastegate valve new turbo (old one was on its way out) one new injector and complete injector harness replaced (due to a missfire) compression test - good new MAF service of all filters & fluids Coolant sensor replaced and checked to be showing the correct temp.
  • Vauxhall Vectra C - Halfords Auto centre 17 May 2012 (Forum)
The fault was a faulty cam sensor and a crank shaft sensor which has now been fixed and the car is running perfectly on the original tank of diesel. After many phone calls to the drain down company they have now agreed a £75 refunds. I have also spoken to Steve at your Halfords Garage regarding Alan and Steve offered me a £100 discount on a service but to be frank after Steve told me all the mechanics looked at my car and all agreed that it was petrol and not diesel I've lost all confidence in Halfords Auto care and don't want to take up the offer.
  • Citroen Saxo VTR 2000 W Reg - Major electrical issue(s) 18 Jan 2012 (Forum)
One final point is that I think that there is a leak on my drivers side door seal which leaves the drivers side carpet damp (I don't think any electrics run under here though.)  I half believe that the relay contacts may actually have frozen or there is a terminal issue with the ignition barrel. I am quite handy with electrical testing as I used to fault find on diesel generators for a living.
  • mazda 6 2008 - Mazda Campaign - Finally get heard? 7 May 2010 (Forum)
I must have gone to the petrol station and filled my engine oil up with diesel which caused the engine over-run... excuse me? 6. I did not read the hand book which states how the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) works; I got heavily questioned on this subject.
  • Things we didn't ask for on cars 22 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Is it really better than an ordinary flywheel that lasts the life of the car, because I don't remember many problems with those on the road or track? 2. The beloved ECU.....can it run windows 7, or Vista, does it have a full colour 18 inch display, or 300 gigabytes of storage and 4gb of onboard ram. Does it have multiprocessing ability, can it play music, does it replace your stereo, or MP3 player, can it play DVDs in the car.
  • Reborn classics - your choices? 5 Aug 2009 (Forum)
A Countryman version would be possible, too. Austin-Healey 3000 - suitably modernised, that'd give the Z4 a run for its money! Ford Cortina - to show that cheap, practical RWD thrills are still possible. Ford Capri - ditto. Not that awful Focus-based FWD thing they're planning. Alvis TE21 - if I had to explain, you wouldn't understand, so here goes.
  • Landmark parking ticket victory 2 Dec 2008 (Forum)
As a result the council can issue Penalty Charge Notices (parking tickets) to any vehicle waiting on that single yellow line (unless they are exempt ? e.g unloading goods) during those restricted hours without the need for individual time plates running along the length of the single yellow line. If Controlled Parking Zone is NOT valid then no parking ticket can be issued to a vehicle parked on a single yellow line UNLESS THEY HAVE THOSE INDIVIDUAL TIME PLATES!
  • The joys of buying a new car 17 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Step inside whilst we do some paperwork then you can take it out for an hour or so, both of you can drive it. Plenty of fuel in it so take it for a good run." did paperwork, came out to car, got comfy in it, guy showed me all around the controls & off we went. Took it out for just over an hour, both of us had a go in it. Back to dealer, sat down with the salesman, had a nice civilised discussion about the car, its' options and he also gave a very good p/ex price for 51 '206' LX 50k, one owner and then said "ok, we've been through the options, would you be prepared to commit now ?"
  • Impressions of new Focus C-max 19 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Somewhat later, having in the meantime, just got on with driving it and found it just seemed to do the job in that uncomplicated simple way that base level Fords tend to do, found myself confronted with a couple of suicidal deer hinds running across the road immediately in front and then freezing in the headlights. Yikes! ABS pumping furiously, EBD distributing whatever electronic brake distribution does in its mysterious way, your reporter sawed away at the wheel and the Focus C-Max just...... well went "Certainly Oh master!"
  • DIY Transport Policy 4 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Four or five geographically distinct operators, each with responsibility for trains and track in its area. Ensure that specialist independent operators (like Freightliner) can run their trains on the new companies? tracks. 3. Explain to the railway companies that people need to get to their stations before they can use the trains, and they will probably drive there. This means car parks.

In a thread on getting a Yaris and the long waiting times (which has long since scrolled in to the bit bucket that is anything not on the front page of this forum) Mark (B) made some cogent comments on how things work elsewhere in the world as far as putting up with long waiting times for a new car... this drew some flak to which I responded in some detail... not wanting my deathless prose to go unread by my huge fan club (pause for sound of one hand clapping.... thank you) I thought I would use it to start a new thread on the general aspects on how things work in different parts of the world and kick it off with a look at how it works over here (BTW Mini buyers might find this like to the USA MINI site of interest Esp. in regard to the TV Advertising that they are running (can be seen with Quick Time Or WMP) (also almost all Mini dealers in the US offer as a dealer option full roof size decals of eitheer the US flag or the Union Jack or a bunch of flowers (ala Peter Max) to go on a white top Mini and the Union Jack out sells the US flag about 2 to one and almost no flower decals have been sold (Info from a NewEngland Dealer other parths of the US may be diferent) strange huh?
  • Toyota RAV4 - Toyota RAV4 - Dodgy MOT/Ripped Off? 18 Jul 2023 (Forum)
We do have the time and energy to get a couple of garages to inspect and report on the state of Rust/Corrosion on the underbody to be used in a case in small claims court.  We've got 14 days until the current MOT runs out to either sell it for parts/scrap. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  • Cabrio joy 10 May 2020 (Forum)
A car designed to have a roof whence it is chopped off it wobbles around like jelly falling off a toddlers plate. Scuttle shake is a horrid thing which will ruin a run in many convertibles especially 80’s chop-shop efforts such as the Escort and Astra. Even the hugely expensive Saab 900 was a blancmange on wheels, the later Cavalier based models were horrid and had a nasty habit of splitting its bulkhead.
  • Volvo V40 - Volvo New 2.0l diesel reliability 7 Dec 2015 (Forum)
I arrived home to a low oil light (it has recently transpired my oil level was fine and they actually removed to much) slightly annoyed I called for Volvo assist to attend again, promptly he arrived tested my car and confirmed it was to low, he proceeded to top up a process that took more than an hour of running testing and topping up. Eventually he told me all was fine but it took 1.5 litres to get the oil gauge half way. So I set of on my trip to Birmingham some 90 miles with my wife in the pouring rain, about half way it became hard to clear my windscreen not thinking any ting of it other than contamination from passing traffic I pushed on, about 20miles out my engine light came on again.

  • Swapped the wifes car (cars) 24 Jun 2015 (Forum)
Ceed is almost 5 years old and has only done 5,500 miles in the last 12 months which is not good for a diesel with a DPF. We have tried to do regular long runs but it is inevitable it will bite us eventually. £110 VED. Micra is 7 1/2 years old and whilst low mileage (26,000) and in excellent condition its inevitable it will want money spending soon.
  • Peugeot 307 - Car mounts pavement, Reg photo, Police No Action 8 May 2014 (Forum)
As the rogue driver swept past me I reacted instantly by shouting loudly "Oi - watch where you are going matey" and as I did so I broke into a run and pursued the car down the hill past the Family of four at the bus stop and managed to take four photos. The driver left the pavement and returned to the road once he had negotiated the temporary 'hold up' and narrowly avoiding a collision with the Family of four waiting on the pavement, at the bus stop, outside the Woodmans Arms.
  • BMW 3 Series E36 - Increased Deceleration and a lack of Acceleration! 18 Dec 2012 (Forum)
I have tried running the car with the MAF unplugged and it stuttered horendously and anything other than very light throttle and the engine would try to die. Plugging it back in and the car drives normally only still with the above described symptoms.

  • Warranty claim / conflict of interest for garage 31 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I took it into a more local manufacturer?s garage and they quickly diagnosed heavy breathing. In fact, with the engine running, if you removed the oil filler cap it did and still does a (depressingly) good impression of a steam train with smoke and oil spitting several feet up in the air. It also does the same if the dip stick is removed indicating it is likely to be blow past the pistons as opposed to valve guides.
