  If I 'feather' the throttle, gently opening and closing it, I can get the oil pressure gauge to move up and down without any significant change in the engine speed. It's a mechanical gauge: I reckon that under power the crankshaft is being forced downwards by the action of the conrods, away from the oil feed holes in the journals (hence the drop in pressure).

  Reading the chat about filters rang some bells - my Cavalier 16V (2l ecotec)had started to tap (not every time) for several 'long' seconds after cold start-up since the last oil change (same 15/50 oil which I always use). The filter was made by FRAM which I've always thought to be a well-known make. Anyway, I've just swapped the filter to a genuine GM and, guess what, the start-up rattle has gone!

  I took the Focus TDCI for a MOT, which it passed, an oil change and filter and a new fuel filter to my local independent garage yesterday. The reason why I get the garage to do the oil change is because it is impossible to do without being on a ramp. It is very difficult to do even on a ramp, it took the mechanic quite a while to get the undertray off, it took even longer to get it back on again.

  I have taken the manifold heat shield off and the only place I believe the oil can be coming from is the head gasket (though I have not ruled out the cam cover) I changed the coolant about three months ago, the old was spotlessly clean despite its eight years and the new still is perfectly clean, the level is fine and the temp gauge rock steady.

  I have a 96 model with 60k on the clock. Owned and regularly 10k serviced and oil changed from new, (by me since warranty, using synthetic oil). Having left it standing for 5 weeks recently I started it and it unfortunately fired and started immediately. Obviously whilst standing, all oil (it is very thin!

  I am a window cleaner so there's quite a bit of stop and start but also a bit of 60mph throughout the week. I have not been keeping up on my filter/oil changes (as i know i should - very naughty!). Its been getting a bit louder lately - turning the music up higher now. The manual says i should be using 5w30. 5w30/10w40 for top ups. Should i be going with fully synthetic or semi?

  Recently had my car serviced and the garage left the sump plug loose. On the way home the plug came out and the car drained oil. I got a warning light just before arriving home but im not certain how long I drove without oil. I called the AA and the guy confirmed what had happened and took some photos for me. The guarge revovered the car and have changed the oil 3 times and say the car is OK.

  How many miles can I drive before I scrap the car (repair cost is very high)? As there is water in the oil if I change the oil will this buy me some extra time? What oil grade do I use?

  Hi ppl, just bought a corsa sxi1.2,     I have been driving it now for 3 weeks now and it has just started to make a tapping noise very much like a diesel, I have changed the oil and filter ( oil crap and filter worse). But it has made no odds, oil magnatec and halfords filter, when I first start the car from cold its fine sounds good no tapping at all but after about a 10 min drive the tapping   starts and gets worse,   also I have noticed a whistle when I accelerate hard around 4-5 000 rpm it seems to be coming out of the exhaust, any help please guys

  While pricing some bits for my cam belt change I thought I would get some automatic transmission oil for my Zafira 1.8 with a AF17 gearbox ? Haynes manual and a friends VX tis cd (2003) says it should be VX part No. 09 117 946 but having been down to the VX dealers they say it should be Dexron11 and VX part No 90350342.

  I have a 3yr old Astra with this engine and am slightly worried by the prospect of this failure occurring. Also, what is the timing belt change interval on this engine? Many thanks, Chris.

  Or would it be cheaper to replace with a standard disposable filter, rather than investing in some cleaner and oil? And from where would I buy some of this cleaner and oil? Comments, observations, and advice most welcome! Best wishes rg

  In May 1999 at 77000 genuine miles my Sierra auto gearbox blew its front main oil seal causing £700 worth of internal damage. Having had the box re-conditioned I also changed the rad/oil cooler as the oil cooler part was completely blocked. One of the electric cooling fans had failed so this was replaced too.

  Need an oil change on the car and National Tyres had some offers on a while back, although I cant find any of them valid for 2010. Anybody know of any? thanks

  anyone ever changed an oil filter on audi and no where they are located? car in question is an A6 tho apparently the working parts are meant to be very similar to that of A4 and Passat. advice would be appreciated

  My r reg 2l cdx 97k vectra gear box is a bit on the noisy side (I know , what do you expect/) what would be a good additive when I do an oil change ??

  I have an Audi A6, which I purchased from new and have serviced according to the manual. last year I went to collect it from it's service and the dealer tried to charge for changing the brake fluid, it is recommended for change at two yearly intervals, I pointed out that it had been changed the previous year and was shown as such in the service book, I did not therefore pay for it, when I got home I looked in the service book, which had been left in the car prior to collection, no note was made of the fluid change!

  http://tinyurl.com/ycn7pwy Looks like the service is £175 (I am assuming that the first 12 month service is an interim service), but on the form there are 4 items that they claim are "Ford recommendations", specifically: * Air con treatment * Pollen filter replacement * Oil-top up * Brake fluid change Elsewhere on the page there are prices for the pollen filter (£39.99), the air con treatment (£29.99) and the brake fluid change (£55). There is no indication of a price for the oil top up.

  I use Millers fully synthetic XFD 5w40 in the car. I spoke to the dealership this morning and they have told me the problem is being caused by the oil. They said fully synthetic oil is causing the EGR valve to stick. I believe this to be complete rubbish, and I think I am being fobbed off. I've spoken to Millers Oils this morning and Ford approve Millers XSS 5w30 (semi-synth), so I am going to change onto this in the next couple of weeks.

  I started to suspect a gearbox driveshaft bearing so removed the gearbox filler plug and a trickle of oil came out, so it wasn?t low on gearbox oil. I emptied the gearbox oil and the magnet on the drain plug had some swarf attached to it but it didn?t seem excessive (how much is excessive?). I refilled the gearbox with oil as described in the Haynes manual.
