  • Golf2 doesnt like wet weather 24 Jun 2004 (Forum)
My Golf Mk2,Driver 1.6,Greg-is getting harder to start from cold in wet weather. It splutters, backfires, and sometimes the battery go`s flat from the turning over.Ive tried spraying wd4o on the leads, coil and distributor, which sometimes makes a difference, but I usually have to hold the starter on with throttle right down;when it eventually starts,it splutters for a few miles before running smoothly. It starts and runs fine in dry weather,so,any ideas what the problem is?Leads?Coil? • Windscreen creaks and cracks. Audi A4. 18 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I run a 1997 Audi A4 1.9 TDI.It starts first turn, runs brilliantly with plenty of poke and economy. However on starting from cold and driving a few miles as soon as the heater starts blowing warm air onto the windscreen a problem ensues. When going round a bend the windscreen gives sharp cracking noises. These noises sound almost like a stone hitting your screen at speed.Once the car is warm though all is quiet again.Has anyone any idea about the cause or a possible cure?
  • Rover 600 Turbo Diesel Ecu 9 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Am I right in thinking that all functions of a pump are now controlled by an Ecu, and any faults are only repairable by someone with the software/reader etc to read the faults. My Rover 600 Diesel runs beatifully most of the time but just recently has started to almost stall on roundabouts etc and the yellow engine warning light comes on., then it will pick up again and run for a day or so without occyuring again...
  • Motorway Maintenance 11 May 2003 (Forum)
What exactly are the Health & Safety Rules for workers on Motorways? I regularly travel the M8 Glasgow to Edinburgh and see workers having to run from the centre island to the waiting lorry on the hardshoulder dragging the big "Roadworks 800yds signs" etc. Are they been forced to cut corners or is this the accepted method of working? I know I wouldn't like to try running across a motorway alone, never mind dragging one of these signs behind me!
  • New Mondeo cooling fan 19 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Latest problem on my new shape Mondeo - erratic operation of the radiator cooling fan. It starts running whenever the car is started up (even after being stood overnight or for a couple of days) It then (presumably) cuts out somewhere along the journey as it is generally not running by the time I reach my destination.
  • diesel engines annoy swmbo 29 Jan 2003 (Forum)
swmbo is annoyed by the lads calling at the plumbers merchants next door to us who pull onto the forecourt and leave their engines running while they nip in for a box of elbows/fag/brew etc. In the morning this can be a bit irritating as two or three vans all arrive together . Why don`t they switch off their engines ? I suspect it`s a throwback to when diesels were hard to start so the easy option was to leave them running but todays refined diesel engines should be more reliable , so why do they still do it ?

  • Cut out when starting 29 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Dear all, Hope you all had a great Christmas. There is a running problem with my engine. When starting from cold, it starts straight away with no throttle but would cut-off straight away. I have to blip the throttle to keep it running for a few seconds then it idles at 1200rpm.
  • Honda Accord "Pinking" and Power Lack 17 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I also have lack of power sometimes when pulling off in first (gets bogged down for a few seconds then accelerates OK). Other times the car runs fine. Fuel economy is terrible though, now I only get about 26MPG combined, and 32 on a run (used to get 38+ before noise started. Anyone else got similar problems?
  • OIl sludge 7 Jan 2001 (Forum)
My 95 ford fiesta 1.1LX appears to use a lot of oil, I can see no leaks, it does not appear to burn any oil but it does have a oil sludge problem, it is reguarly serviced and doesnt do short runs. I have changed the oil filler/breather cap (i.e. crankcase ventilation) to solve the sludge problem but this hasn't made any difference. The car itself runs perfect I'm just fed up with putting oil in all the time!!!!

  • BMW 1 Series - BMW Puncture woes 25 Nov 2019 (Forum)
Where's the spare ? Err, its a BMW, originally supplied with run-flats so there's no spare. Do you have a tin of goo? A jack? A compressor? No, BMW has run-flats so none of the above. If it had run-flats why can't you drive it ? Err, I replaced the tyres recently and boought non run-flats as they were cheaper.
  • Bio Fuel - Jeep Cherokee 2.8 diesel 6 Jul 2007 (Forum)
He went away very happy however 9 months down the road it has now done the same thing again. Warranty has told him where to go as he has been running it on bio fuel but I don?t know much about bio fuel and can?t see how or why it should do this to the oil and wreck his engine? Think he is now going to learn a hard lessen and not run it on bio fuel being it?
  • Peugeot 307 - 2 litre Petrol (2002) - Engine runs roughly 20 secs after cold start 18 Nov 2021 (Forum)
On a cold start (first thing in the morning) motor start fine, after approx 20 secs  the motor then starts to chug as though it is running on 3 cylinders. At this time the engine dash light comes on and an anti- pollution fault and catalytic convertor fault message are displayed on the screen. Once driving for approx 1 km the engine then starts to again run on 4 cylinders and no problem then occurs till the next mornings cold start.

  • Fiat Panda 2007 1.3 multi-jet diesel - Water in Fiat Panda air filter 5 May 2025 (Forum)
The entrance is protected only by the perforated rad grill so inevitably rain and spray enter.  WORSE.  If the car is parked 'looking uphill', rain water runs down the bonnet and drips into the air intake.  WORSE STILL, there is a raised bar running horizontally across the radiator grill - if the car is parked looking uphill, snow, sleet, hail and ice will collect on and above the bar and on the grill.
  • Any - Giveing the car a run 24 Sep 2019 (Forum)
Once we arrived before switching off I was replying to a txt when I thought to myself the carfeels a bit smoother at idle.   Could this be due to the car having a good run and getting nice and hot and clearing out some cobwebs?
  • Ford Fiesta 54 - Coolant leaking when engine running 6 Jun 2018 (Forum)
I have checked my car this morning and the reserve tank is still half full so it only seems to be leaking when the engine is running. I'm going to take it to the garage however I was hoping for some possible causes so that I don't get my eyes taken out - any help would be appreciated.
  • LTI - Buying Used Taxi 8 Aug 2017 (Forum)
For some reason everybody seems to think I am an expert on taxis! A friend has run a V6 Galaxy for the past 6/7 years. The running costs have always been high but this year there have been some horrendous servicing/repair costs (current mileage 140k). With ever larger ones looming he has decided to give up on it.
