New Zealand - Driving Experience 10 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Road works start at the point road works are needed, i.e. none of this coned off nonsense for 20 miles before (like you get in UK) 11. They sure like their 4x4's over here and they especially love their Subarus! Saw lots of Jap cars of model types I have never heard of before. Lots of old cars here. 12 Hired a car from Ace rentals for £350 for 3 weeks. It was a white 1.5 Corolla auto. -
Winter tyres for hirecar to Austria end February? 4 Mar 2008 (Forum)
The law does not specify which type of tyre is 'appropriate' the general opinion is that any type of tyre except summer tyres is appropriate, including all-year tyres. Winter tyres must bear the mark M+S or display the snowflake on the side wall. Motorists, whose car is equipped with summer tyres while there is snow and ice, may not take the car on the road. Motorists in violation face fines of EURO 20. -
Suggestions for a car please 14 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Volkswager Bora - completely off topic, but you can get a 2.3 V5 of 2.84Motion for far less than Golf equivalent, and i had one (a Tdi) a few years back as a company car and it was really rather good. Honda Prelude - should be fun, and has good safetly features to accompany it s performance, but the interior is SO low grade - looks worse than a Honda Civic from same period. MG ZS - could be tempted, but what are the risks in buying an MG / Rover, and were late ones subject to any dodgy cost cutting at manufacturer, I know that late Rover 75s were awful (I had one as a hire car and it felt stripped of all the quality that made the earlier ones appealing. -
Prius Becomes Self-aware -Crashes Itself 13 Mar 2007 (Forum)
. - A hybrid car going somewhere between 30-60 mph blasted a hole into the side of a mini-mart store and gas station Tuesday afternoon, narrowly missing a clerk and sparking a fire. The accident occurred at the Hosmer Food Store and 76 gas station in the 8400 block of S. Hosmer. The driver, Art Robinson of DuPont, told KING 5 News that he just purchased the used 2005 Toyota Prius this morning only after he was absolutely sure it was safe to drive. Two different dealers gave it a clean bill of health - one even certified it. -
Seat Leon FR TDi 170: 5,500mile report 3 Jan 2007 (Forum)
As promised a review of my Leon at 5,500 miles and 4 months For comparison, my previous car was a Toledo 110 TDi (old, non-PD lump) and my wife?s car is an Octavia 2.0 TDi with the 140bhp engine. Overall I?m very pleased with the car. It still looks distinctive in a way the Golf never will without being so boy-racer-ish it attracts the wrong kind of attention. -

Your company also arranged and paid for the road tax at the time of purchase. Consequently, it is only now, on the renewal road tax stage, that your company?s grievous error of advice to me has come to my attention. I now find myself with a car that is insured, MOT and road worthy but not road taxable because of the error made by your company. I have been informed by the DVLA that a V62 Form must be completed as the vehicle is ? -
How much to pay for a 2nd hand car 17 Jan 2005 (Forum)
We have seen the following cars and would like some advice on the prices we should be aiming to pay. 1. 1.8 petrol Passat, S. 13,700 miles on an 04 plate. VW asking price £10,900. Parkers Guide has a retail price for this car at 10,000 miles of £11,300; this price is for a car not from a franchised dealer and not in an 'approved car' scheme. -
Dodgy mechanics 16 Oct 2004 (Forum)
My clutch is playing up on my car, so I took it back to the garage I had it done at to have it looked at/fixed (it\'s 4 months and 5000 miles under a 2 year/20000 miles warranty). I took it back in on the 4th October (last Monday) and I was told that they would need to make a few phone calls and to get back in touch with them later on. -
1999 Passat Electrics, niggles 17 Sep 2004 (Forum)
It can be manually locked from the inside by pressing down the button on that door, but it never stays locked by using the "master" button for all doors. At the start of the year, I did briefly experience a problem with the rear N/S passenger door refusing to unlock when pressing the button on the remote key, but this seemed to go away after happening intermittently three or four times. It's not a major worry if this is all that might happen (I rarely use this function), but I'm concerned that a problem with the central locking could lead to someone being trapped in the car, or the car becoming unlockable. -
VW TDI crankshaft problems 10 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Dear All Just a quick note relating to my damaged VW Golf Mark 4 TDI crankshaft. Having been a VW \'nut\' all my motoring life (beetles/type 3\'s/golfs etc) I became the owner of a 2000 model 110bhp Golf TDI. Brilliant car etc. Treat her like my baby with regard to condition/service etc. 85k mileage always taken in to VW dealers for service (prior to service interval dates) always run on premium Mobil one oil etc etc. taken into dealer for 60k cambelt change (at 56k - early)got car back - all seemed above board etc. -
A car drowned in the sea..... 6 Jan 2003 (Forum)
When I got my car home I put it through one of those car washes with the powerful under car jets twice, and then garaged it up my in-laws, took all the mats out and cleaned them (there was quite a bit of sand in them), soaked as much water as I could out of the footwells (the carpets were absolutely s**den) and left the car to dry out for a couple of days. After that, I never really gave it much thought. However, in the last couple of months a couple of funny things have happened. First, the petrol cap release cable snapped (obviously this runs from the driver's footwell back through the car to the petrol cap), the dealer said it had "just snapped" and there was no reason for it. -
Best legal advice 22 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I got in the back of the car whereupon the young woman started to aggressively question me as to my driving speed, distances, weather, the other driver?s speed etc. etc. etc. each question came as bullet out of a gun. I didn?t have time to answer even one of them before the next was being fired at me. I then mulishly ignored her having mentally decided that ? -
Green Vs Car 31 Jan 2002 (Forum)
This line of logic normally ends with it being another green/gov conspiracy. Pollution is truly defined as a concentration of a substance(s) in a location where it is not normally/naturally found OR in a higher concentration than normally/naturally found where it HAS the ability to affect other functions of that system. For example, Oxygen can be a pollutant and is terminally toxic at high concentrations, but at normal levels it is essential for aerobic life. -
Wonderful Range Rover USA service 13 Dec 2001 (Forum)
They are also the local Jaguar dealer and let me take a new X type for the afternoon when the RR was not done by 13:00 as promised... this new Jag had all the bells and whistles including a fancy Navigation system that was actualy better than the one in the new Range Rover they let me use (7" screen rather than 5") (BTW I was very impresed with the new X type and I found it's driving position nicer than the S type). There was a posting last week about the J. D. Powers USA rankings where Jag did well and this drew some caustic comments from one reader... but It seems to me that in the US at any rate Ford is making a major effort with their 'import' lines. -

Interest free 29 May 2024 (Forum)
I think the last car I really fancied was my neighbours bright red Fiat 500 Arbath, but it’s a bit too small to work for us even as a second car. Beyond that I’m drifting back to the early naughties or even the 90’s. I’ve driven a recent Golf GTi and found it no fun at all. Very efficient, quick and refined but it just wasn’t fun. Bring back the fun. Even car adverts and motor shows are largely gone, cars are a financial product you rent to get you from A to B as dispassionately as possible. -
