  • People’s performance car 24 Aug 2021 (Forum)
Peugeot 405 Mi 16 Vauxhall Cavalier GSi 16v Nissan Primera ZX Ford Mondeo ST200 VW Golf Mk II GTi 16v VW Jetta GTi 16v Peugeot 306 GTi-6 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 Renault 5 GT turbo Renault 19 16v Renault Clio 16v Renault Clio Williams Renault 21 Turbo Honda Accord Type R It’s a tough one but I’d probably agree with Clarkson and co and say that the Mondeo ST200 is the best all round family performance car. It was fun yet practical. It could run to 150,000 miles yet beat most hot hatches down a twisting B road and it wasn’t too expensive to buy, especially used as everyone sought out people carriers and premium badges with piddly 4cyl motors.
  • Mazda 6 - 2006 Mazda 6 Diesel low performance, no CEL 3 Jul 2021 (Forum)
Then I noticed that turbo was not working as it should have been, the issue was vacuum hose, which was broken and after fixing it, car was like new, it was running fast and smooth, no problems at all. It had DPF light on while in limp mode but after fixing all the things, it got erased and never saw it again. now, after about 1-2 months I lost power again, I don't get any CEL, checked turbo for leaks and it is fine, the mechanic said the turbo itself is not damaged and works fine, however I get low boost, car accelerates normally up until 3K rpm and then it feels like something is holding it off.
  • Seat Ibiza 2014 - Engine squealing sound. 11 May 2021 (Forum)
I have no idea what it could be, i do remember about 2 years ago i was advised that the coolant gas needs replacing because its running low, i have no idea if this is relevant but i thought i would mention it. I have a video of the sound, you can hear it more clearly at around 1 min 35 seconds. If im not allowed to post a link i will remove it.
  • Mazda cx3 - Third Mazda service and MOT 10 Feb 2021 (Forum)
Another thought--perhaps I should just forget about the idea of the paid for third service in my current location, just have an MOT done--then have a short "3rd" ( oil change essential) service done by a specialist non dealer in my new location-who naturally won't do it for free.Even if I postponed a 3rd service till the summer /early autumn--I doubt if i would have covered more than 5000 miles since march 2020. I haven't decided anything yet. The vehicle is running fine. Comments welcome
  • Any - Bangernomics & big bills 8 Feb 2021 (Forum)
l love the idea of bangernomics. Getting hold of a car for 1k, or thereabouts & running it for as as long as is possible on minimal outlay. l've always bought cars (not particularly bangers) with functionality in mind, not just in terms of reliability, but doing the job they were built for.
  • Honda Jazz - Catalytic converter theft 9 Oct 2020 (Forum)
His insurers want to write the car off as a replacement will cost more than the value of the car.  He is in two minds as the car is on a 54 plate with 38,000 miles on the clock, runs beautifully and is in excellent condition.  However, fitting a replacement is merely inviting a repeat of the theft.  Garaging the car is out of the question as there are no such facilities nearby.
  • Subaru Forester 2.5XT - Stainless Steel exhausts., M I J Walsall 17 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Knowing the dealer cost of a new exhaust for our previous Subaru ( a cool grand) i didn't even bother ringing Subaru, so once again drove up to the fine people that run MIJ exhausts at Walsall, who in just under 3 hours made an excellent stainless system and fitted it, all for just under £300 with a lifetime guarantee, which is exactly £50 cheaper than the typical factor supplied and fitted mild steel system would have cost, and that would have been the wrong system anyway because they try to pass off the smaller bore system of the 2.0 litre NA engine as being suitable for the turbocharged XT, it isn't.
  • Focus 2016 1.5tdci Estate 120 - What is happening here? 3 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Both times I started the engine soon after discovering the issue and it has started fine each time, and then run and cooled down as expected. I've had a quick look to see if there is any sort of advance warming system on this engine, but nothing obvious is found and I doubt it likely on a lower end Ford.
  • Cheap small 80s/90s Jap: Starlet, Micra, Sunny...? 25 Jul 2020 (Forum)
Plus some K10 Micras albeit over 1k. I've also found Honda Civics of the time but they have larger engines and could be pricier to run. Anyway, which of these cars would be the ideal choice? I know they may not be as fun as later Jap cars but their sharp lines and present scarcity give them originality. And I'm aware they would likely last forever (as long as I watch for rust).
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso - Violent engine Shake Shudd 23 Jun 2020 (Forum)
I have previously had outstanding advice here! Thankyou Honest John. 13/05/2020 I still have the car. I have not tried to run it. I had a good look at the crankshaft pulley that has rubber etc to take the shock out of the timing belt. It appears central and OK. I have heard these fail and cause violent vibration. Decision time.
  • Vauxhall Astra Mk 5 2.0 Petrol - Misfire after 30 seconds. 12 May 2020 (Forum)
    A) As the battery has been flattened could it be the battery is not good enough for the spark to be ok on each cylinder causing a misfire? I thought once a car was started it should run which would rule out the battery? B) The car has not been filled up with fresh petrol at all and is sat with a quarter of a tank of fuel. I buy the super unleaded from the local Texaco garage. Could this have gone bad?
  • Any - Poor breakdown service - Missing the obvious 4 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Rather than call out a garage at our expense (if I could find one on a Saturday) and possibly not achieve a fix before tomorrow's sale, I dug out the charger and gave it an hour. This enabled me to start the car and give it a quick 20 mile run to ensure all was well. It seems to be and I guess it's her low recent miles at the root of it. As to whether it's a knock or a click, Google searches using both terms flag up the battery as a prime suspect.
  • Volkswagen Polo - At what point is it not fit for purpose? 4 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Hi all, I’m hoping that you clever lot will be able to help me with an issue I have run into with my VW Polo 1.4 TDI 2014 79k miles. To cut a long story short, after an issue with the car we have discovered that the dual mass flywheel is smashed to pieces. The clutch itself shows little/no signs of wear.
  • Jaguar XF - 2016 Jaguar XF 2.0D 180 Reliability v 2009 XF 2.7D 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
With nearly 80k miles it still drives like new. However, I'm aware the car is getting on now, it's by far the oldest car I've ever run and arguably I'm sitting on a timebomb in that inevitably it's almost bound to play up at some stage as it gets older and older.  I'm therefore considering a 2016/17 XF 2.0D 180. That said, I'm a bit concerned about swapping my trouble free car for one with potential problems.
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.8 petrol. N68 2002 - Engine breathing PCV system failed 5 Jun 2019 (Forum)
We preferred to buy a new cam cover, £148, to ensure a secondhand one didn't have the same problem as it can only be seen by breaking it open. Since fitting the new cam cover the problem has been totally eliminated and the Picasso is running as it should. What I don't understand is why didn't  Citroen make this PC Valve more accessible and make the membrane in it easy to change if required.  I do have a photo of the old cam cover after i broke it open if anyone wants to see it.
  • VW Polo 1.2 - 2016 VW Polo 1.2 TSI fails first MOT on CO2 emissi 3 May 2019 (Forum)
    - is 0.19% actually okay for a three year old engine of this type and the independent garage doesn't know that? - if i get it passed via VW will I run into issues when next MOT due - does it get worse? - take it up with Driver & Vehical Standards Agency? Thanks in advance for any wisdom here! Dave   https://www.dropbox.com/s/lr6t93o527qezzt/polo_emissions.png?
  • Audi A3 - Accident claim - Black-Box 16 Apr 2019 (Forum)
Had a youngish guy driving an Audi A3 run into the back of me today whilst I was stationary in a queue at traffic lights. Quite a "bang", but not enough impact for his air-bags to deploy. My rear bumper is ruined (and the parking sensors have given up the ghost) and other than that and two very minor dents in the tailgate (probably fixable by a good "dent-doctor"), I've got-off lightly.
  • "Rogue" roundabout - left lane to turn right !! 14 Nov 2018 (Forum)
On my last trip to the UK I had a scary moment on an unsignposted roundabout, one of a series running from Rugby past DIRFT East to the M1 (where the A428 crosses the A5). A very pushy van driver came tearing up the left hand lane and suddenly indicated right. Once on the roundabout he nudged past several cars (including mine) and peeled off on the third exit on the last stretch of the A5 towards the M1 - in other words, he stayed in the LEFT lane to turn RIGHT.
  • Skoda Fabia 1.2 HTP 54 Classic Hatchback Manua - Skoda Fabia 1.2 - reduced power when cold 29 Jul 2018 (Forum)
I  found the following fault codes: 16490 Manifold Abs pressure 16891 idle control system high 16555  fuel trim bank system low - (had this fault for some time) 16514  o2 sensor cicruit (had this fault for some time) 01314 Engine control module My car is not in the best condition ( hense long standing faults), but I trying to keep it running for as long as possible at the moment. Im trying to understand  if the first two fault codes could be related to the problem im having with the car? If yes, my understanding is  I could try cleaning the manifold sensor to see if this helps?
  • Recommendations - used mini MPV, wheelchair etc. 14 Mar 2018 (Forum)
Lastly, I'd like something that is reasonably low emission - with the low tax band to match! - and economical to run.  I realise that I've asked a lot, but a car that gets most of them right  would be great. Some models I've looked at: Citroen C3 Picasso.  This is the one I've earmarked for a while as being my future car.
