  • Omega Estate 2.2 TDi - any thoughts? 14 Feb 2007 (Forum)
It´s a bit early for us to get rid of the Astra (we´were going to wait til next Autumn), which is still running perfectly, but I thought I would have a look at it at least. Think it´s the 120bhp engine. We´re having a play in it tomorrow. He´s offering it to us at about 2.5k less than comparable examples on mobile.de (German autotrader) and it will come in at about 10k (euros) less than I was thinking of investing in our next car - which will buy alot of red wine, pay for a trip to Oz etc etc.
  • Ford KA 2003 Misfire...pls Help..EUC?? 12 Jan 2007 (Forum)
The car just started to missfire and the Engine managment light came on, so I thought I would have a look, Looking at the car I noticed that it was only on No2 that it was misfiring, I pulled the injector multi plug off on no2 and it made no diffrence to the running. pulling any of the others of and it nearly dies. so I swapped the plugs round, and the leads. still the same . I carried out a compression check and all was well also, I then removed the fuel rail and swapped over no 1 and no 2 injectors, still the same problem, just on no2... there is a real healthy spak on this so the coil pack looks like it is ok.
  • Overtaking and speeding 5 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I believe that I was only doing this when safe: the road was straight, the line of sight good, and the straight was long enough to be safely legal again long before running out of room. Maximum speed past means minimum time on the wrong side of the road, and therefore is safer. Question is, how does this stand legally? I don?t think you can safely overtake someone doing 40 while not breaking the speed limit, so is this a situation where speeding is allowed, where it is tolerated, or was I just lucky not to be caught?
  • Car price, national vs local 31 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Whilst I realise mine is two years older, Corolla's of my type/age are extremely sought after in this area as they deal well with rural roads, rarely need parts (I've owned it five years, all it's ever needed was a new battery!) & seem to run forever. How do I work out a fair price without ripping my parents off? I'm surprised at the huge difference in local prices, between £700 & £1000, (this both for private and trade) more than the national guide says.
  • Ummmm, what to do? 26 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I will be doing about 10k business miles per year and would have about £175 to spend on the car, for this I could get an Astra/Focus or my favorite choice a Ford Ranger ;o) It would mean a new car, look good at customers sites and hopefully have little in the way ongoing repair costs. 2nd choice - and the one I am leaning towards at the moment is to spend about £2k on a luxary barge, buying it as a private car and taking the 40ppm out of the business (would be better off financialy with this choice) For this money I could easily get a Nissan QX with less then 80k and all the toys - and hopefully the reliability as well - run it for 2 years or so and if need be scrap it after this time (having made £8k out of milage). Down side is the possibility of big repair bills!!! Anything obvious I have overlooked (or cars) or any suggestions that I may want to consider?
  • BMW Auction Report.. 18 Oct 2006 (Forum)
    Not only that, plenty had 2/3/4 PREVIOUS owners & incomplete histories. A sure sign of the hard to keep up with, cost of running a premium motor - or maybe the difficulties, many people might be heading for, when £$£$£ gets a bit tight! Anyway, here's, my Auction Report, from a few examples.... 04 54 645Ci conv 48834 miles cost new £66305 today £33500 05 05 X3 2.0D 15662 '' '' '' £29190 '' £20300 03 03 525D ES SE Touring 63255 '' '' '' £28605 '' £10500 02 52 316i SE Auto 51909 '' '' '' £21945 '' £8300 03 03 MINI Cooper S 40689 '' '' '' £17280 '' £10000 04 04 X5 3.0 D Sport 24654 '' '' '' £39100 '' £22700 03 53 735i Sport 36295 '' '' '' £56825 '' £21800 04 04 530DSE (new) 63813 '' '' '' £34810 '' £15400 05 54 325 CiM Sport conv 13827 '' '' '' £32890 '' £21000 05 05 MINI Cooper 48505 '' '' '' £15365 '' £10900 Lots more, of course, but at least you get an idea - many had LOADS toys, too!!
  • Toyota Yaris Queries 5 Oct 2006 (Forum)
im sure i heard some horror stories on the costs involved with this on a diesel although it wasnt a yaris. 3/ What would a typical life expectency be of a tubo unit - assuming serviced correctly and engine left to idel after hard run Petrol engines 4/ Is the 1.0 ltr yaris a 3cylinder like the aygo??? and if so is it not a bit noisy?? 5/ In hj's car by car breakdown it mentions the posability of heavy oil consumption after 40k miles does anyone know what caused this eg rings, bore wear, seals???
  • Opinions on Golf MK1 1600 Diesel 12 Sep 2006 (Forum)
It must be very economical im assuming being a smallish diesel engine with a light body. One cuse for concern I noticed was that with the engine running when I removed the oil filler cap from the engine there was smoke coming from the filler hole. It was also the same (but less apparent) when I removed the engine dipstick. The engine has had a bottom end rebuild.
  • Bye bye Subaru, hello Subaru 11 Sep 2006 (Forum)
First impressions are of much better interior than the old one (not difficult I know), nice understated looks with not even a 'Spec B' or '3 litre' badge anywhere and promises to be stunning performance once it has been run-in, I'm limited to 4000 rpm at the moment. Interestingly, all Subarus seem to have the first service at 1000 miles, with the owner just paying for the consumables. Turbos and 6 cylinder cars then every 10k or year and non-turbo 12k or year.
  • Nissan Terrano Clutch Slipping 22 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Is it normal to be able to feel substantial heat at bottom of gearstick after driving at motorway speeds for a while? Problem is my warranty runs out in 5 days and I've still not heard back from Nissan (anyone know what rights I might have at this stage?). Any ideas?? Thanks, ...
  • MPV or estate car for 2+3 family 30 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I like the Avensis (particularly the estate) but we're toying with the idea of an MPV. We like the Previa but worry that a) it would be a bit pricey to buy and run and it would be a lot bigger than we would actually need 90% of the time. The Toyota Verso looks like it might be a good compromise but I'm a bit confused as I've heard of Corolla Verso, Avensis Verso - are there different ones?
  • Time for a new car. Please advise. 26 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Any other thoughts from anyone? What about the Skoda octavia estate? Other info: I mainly do short runs of approx 5 miles a time, plus the odd 100 mile each way journey a couple of times a month. Safety is important. Quality feel is important, prestige brand isn't. Fuel economy of 30mph + would be good.
  • Emperors new clothes? 16 Jun 2006 (Forum)
However I've had the misfortune lately to hire a 1.6 LX on a few occasions lately and found it very disillusioning. OK, so the handling's sharp and the major controls work nicely. But the positives start to run out after that. Noise, especially tyre roar, was terrible compared with my Megane, making a 120 mile trip on motorways and fast A roads feel very wearing - just as well the stereo was OK as you had to crank it up to hear it!
  • Good quality bangers 29 Apr 2006 (Forum)
A passat estate was almost a goer but then I noticed some twonk had clearly stuck something heavy on the roof and had stoved in the sun roof and the rubber surround had rotted and disintegrated. Every other car actually running around on the road of the same age or parked up seemed to be in much better condition. The stuff in car dealers seemed to be total rubbish. Several had missing door mirrors, dents, rust or all over scratches that seemed unusual for 10 year old cars.
  • The Top Gear Thread - Volume 20 15 Apr 2006 (Forum)
His argument seemed to be that all the g-forces were offputting, when we all know that without them, and with a couple of sticky plastic buttons instead of a steering wheel, we are in the scenery immediately, running over pedestrians and being pursued by virtual police cars prior to being dragged out of our wrecked car and quite rightly shot dead on the spot. That's what happens to me when I play Grand Theft Auto anyway.
  • Incredibly stupid insurance question 22 Mar 2006 (Forum)
However, given that if my insurer picks up the bill for the other party, will I have to pay my own excess? Does my policy (which has 4 months to run) terminate and require me to find insurance again? In other words, is the excess applicable to the whole policy or just to the comprehensive element, which is intact?
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - aircon stopped working - fuse? 8 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I think this may be just a relay fault perhaps. I have had a cooling fan changed last year. As I understand that the two fans run in parallel and have two speeds for cooling. Before I changed my cooling fan last year my air con worked with just one cooling fan working. Before anyone asks - Yes I have checked the handbook and it only refers to cooling there is no mention of air con or compressor in any way.
  • Another missed service question 6 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I suppose my question is should I take the car back for a refund (dealer have agreed to do this, they accept car was misrepresented) or accept what's happened and take a car which drives well with the increased warranty package? What are the possible problems I could run into in the future if I (as always) am meticulous about maintaining servicing from now on? I appreciate there may be an effect on resale value but this will likely be minimised as I tend to keep cars for some time.
  • Traffic Warden Theory - Discuss 25 Jan 2006 (Forum)
They get fired. So the traffic wardens you have left are the evil ones. Now repeat. Every time this process is run through the "nicest" wardens fall off the bottom and the nastiest ones remain. It's almost like "survival of the fittest" but more, survival of the evilest. The group of wardens that survive this process over and over again are simply the ones with the least conscience.
  • Executive? airport parking 4 Dec 2005 (Forum)
On arrival I could barely access the building as the forecourt and approach road were cluttered with very many heavily frosted cars, so like the other early arrivals I had to abandon my car in the remaining clear single track, register and run for the check-in desks. Unsurprisingly, on my return, the Volvo was waiting in much the same area as I were I had left it, only facing the exit, not frosted admittedly, but then it was a frost-free night!
