  • Volvo S60 (2000 - 2009) - Interior trim / plastic paint - any good? 1 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I think this same silver highlighting would look good along the door cappings, and maybe even on the strip of trim running along the top of the glovebox lid. As I said, this is not my own design - Volvo themselves did it on later models. The paints seem to be readily available with a primer, the colour, and then a clearcoat sealant.
  • Choosing £3k estate/saloon - comments welcome 1 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Originally I was looking at estates, but now we're putting off getting a dog for at least a year, so have been considering saloons also. We only drive about 5-7k miles per year, mostly running around the suburbs, M-ways and Scottish/Welsh country roads. Priorities are comfort, reliability and handling. In roughly equal measure. Prefer petrol to diesel. Prefer manual to auto. I'd favour Japanese, Ford or possibly BMW.
  • Volvo C30 (2006 - 2009) - Slow seller? 10 Jun 2008 (Forum)
No other changes to options have been reported. Both the SE and R-Design Sport will come in Flexifuel versions that run on E85 bio-ethanol or regular petrol. The 1.8F SE and the 1.8F R-Design Sport will both have an On the Road price of £16,205." I'm guessing that the price cuts/spec. changes indicate that the C30 hasn't been selling too well...
  • BMW 5-Series E34 (1987 - 1996) - 89 3.5 535 Sport ABS Issue 16 May 2008 (Forum)
Evening folks, as above having problems with the abs on my 535, basically the story goes, removed the rear axle to replace some bushes and also run some new brake lines as the old ones had corroded. once reassembled everything was fine but then after a couple of days the abs light came on. i assumed it would be a piece of dirt had come lose of the hub rings and got onto the sensor causing it to flag an error, removed the sensors and sure enough there were a couple of large bits of rust stuck to the sensor. removed them reassembled again and the light was out so thought all was well. a few days later i ran the car up to warm on the drive the other day whilst bleeding the coolant and after about 10 minutes the abs light came on so now im back to square one. it could be some more dirt on the sensor but im not sure, or could it be ive got air into the abs unit when replacing the brake lines?
  • Praise for dealer 18 Apr 2008 (Forum)
You could hardly hear it when it was full of things but empty, it was certainly there. Bearing in mind that the 3 year warranty runs out December, I thought I would pop into my dealer and just get it checked, fully expecting to be told 'theyre all like that' or something to that effect. The manager took it out for a drive and then spent 15 mins with it on a ramp checking the fluid and checking anything else that could have been making the noise.
  • Mercedes Benz E-Class W124 (1985 - 2000) - 1994 E320 Coupe - Cruise Control problem 2 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Basically, when driving at a speed around 120km/h, the car appears to "jerk" continually, instead of running at smoothly at the required speed. The effect is similar to someone pushing the accelerator then taking their foot off continually. It's particularly evident when going up hill, and less evident at higher speeds.
  • Volkswagen Golf II (1983 - 1992) - 1992 1.8 driver with webber (relay trouble) 3 Mar 2008 (Forum)
When this relay is having one of its' bad days (normally during acceleration or dropping revs) it is causing my headlights and dash lights to pulse, which is obviously not good. I'm wondering whether maybe this relay is redundant now as i am running a webber carn with a manual choke. or is it still needed? If i remove the relay my revs seem to be ok, and no pulsing of headlights anymore. I'm just a bit worried that the relay may be important or that by removing it i am ignoring a more serious problem that is causing this in the first place.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 99 HDi fuel problem? 23 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I suspect it is either an ECU problem or something to do with the fuel supply? When it does do it and I switch off the engine appears to run on for a few seconds, could this be a clue? Also last night it now stalls when I take my foot off the gas whilst driving, could be related? Does anyone have any idea whats going on with this car>?
  • Subaru Legacy and Outback Petrol (2004 - 2009) - My Mondeo's Legacy 20 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Well, after months of argument with Ford and their local main dealer, and the involvement of my solicitor, my 2006 Mondeo TDCI estate was finally repaired under warranty in early January. A new fuel pump and several other components finally had it running properly. The dealer apologised for the "misunderstandings" (in other words, they failed miserably to screw me for ££££'s of work). Having lost all confidence in the car, and in Ford, and following some excellent advice from this forum, I am now the proud owner of a '55 registered Subaru Legacy Tourer 2.0R.
  • Citroen C5 (2001 - 2008) - 2.0 16V Fuel Economy 18 Feb 2008 (Forum)
If so i may book into Voiture Technique Services in Warwick. A specialist Citroen small garage. Otherwise the car drives and runs fine, no roughness i can see. A little rattle on acceleration from idle but i think one of the steel exhaust shield baffles maybe vibrating (a cheap fix) A average fuel economy of any other C5 2.0 petrol would be nice.
  • Ford Escort (1990 - 1992) - 1991 mk5 1.3 bleeding brakes nightmare! 12 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Hi all and hope you can help me as I am desperate. Whilst bleeding the brakes to replace the fluid, I have run into a few problems concerning the rear brake drums. I use a bleeding kit that works off the tyre pressure. I raised the right rear, removed the wheel, unscrewed the bleed screw....no fluid coming out.
  • Can't get £20 oil change - unlucky or sinister 12 Feb 2008 (Forum)
mate, the pump we use for the oil's broken. Nah - dunno when it's gonna be fixed." After a year! Branch (2) says: " Nah! we've run out of oil - it might be in stock next week or the week after" I popped into Kwik-Fit: "We used to do them, but not now - you need a proper service technician and he has to look all over the car for a couple of hours.
  • Citroen ZX (1992 - 1998) - 1993 1.9TD Avantage 5 drs - Speedo Not Working 9 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Anyway, I reconnected the part of the cable that had pulled apart and when all the surround dashboard parts were put back together I took it for a test run - THE SPEEDO DIDN'T WORK !!! I opened it up again to look but the cable end was still connected to the speedo. Enquiringly, I rang my local Citroen dealer who said I probably needed a new speedo cable - I also read that there is an upper and a lower cable (the part that I have the problem with being the upper I presume).
  • How far ahead do you look when driving? 7 Feb 2008 (Forum)
How far ahead do you look - even in daylight? This question has come to mind because of the "hit & run/jaywalking" thread, and also because of this, in broad daylight (11:30 a.m.), about 10 days ago: I was driving along a not-very-familiar piece of dual carriageway, the A421, east of Bedford, in the Midlands.
  • Land Rover Defender (1946 - ) - Anybody ever washed a paper air filter? 30 Jan 2008 (Forum)
The LR Defender Tdi maintenance section says (only for elements not contaminated with oil or carbon deposits): soak the element for 15 to 60 mins in a solution of automatic washing machine detergent and water. Rinse in running water. Allow to dry naturally and dry fully before fitting. Do not attempt to clean a V8 air filter element. It must be renewed. The Mercedes W460/ W463 (G-wagon) manual states: blow out with compressed air first, soak for 10 minutes at 40 degC in washing solution specified in Service Products Specification Sheet 370 (which I can't find).
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - (96-97) 1.9TD -White Smoke on Starting 28 Jan 2008 (Forum)
(Only after starting, and only recently noticed) I only notice the above if the car has stood for a few hours. i.e. Over night / During work. Once ive had the engine running for a bit, it will start fine. There are no obvious mis-fires in the engine, and it generally seems to drive as normal... My best guess is that it's either: A) An injector has gone down B) Fuel timing is out Ive read around, and most people suggest that white smoke is unburnt diesel.
  • Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - 1997 1.5D Problems - Part 2 18 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Folks as some of you maybe aware I have been having problems with my Saxo Diesel running rough and smoking when cold even thou it fires first time. The full thread can be found here http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?v=e&t=57865&m=679243 This has become a monster of a thread with loads of help being offered and followed checking lots of things.
  • Green fingers 18 Jan 2008 (Forum)
All of this took around a week to organise, what with a body scan for the mechanic (he's OK) and a funeral in Dublin for me. My man charged £100 for labour. When I drove the car I could tell immediately that it was running better, with its tendency to stall greatly reduced if not eliminated. I went round to give him the odd two quid from the bill and asked what he had done to it. Looking bashful, he admitted that he had had a bit of time to kill so had taken the inlet tract apart and cleaned everything including the crotchety idle control valve.
  • Jaguar X-Type (2001 - 2009) - manual or auto? 11 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Its not quite bangernomics though having a 5.5 year old car that has done 125k and drives pretty much as new has lead me to believe in running an older car that has already largely depreciated. So I am thinking possibly of a slightly older V6 saloon, not the 2.1, I have driven one, it lacks torque, the 2.5 is much more flexible yet alone the 3.0.
  • Wednesday Bridge Chaos in Scotland due to Weather 10 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Today my dilemma is:- Is it be the 2Kw Petrol @ £250 or the 5Kw Diesel @ £400? I rest my case for getting Jeremy to advise , no run, the Governments both N&S of the Border. PS I recently acquired a Garmin SAT-NAV to augment the speed camera detector / navigation aid one I acquired in 1969 (1945 manufacture date). One has a nagging voice but I refuse to be drawn on which model.
