  • Toyota Prius - Toyota Prius Vs Hyundai Ioniq used prices 12 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Or is the Prius such a robust car that it would still potentially be the better and safer bet in the long run? Thanks for your help
  • Skoda Octavia Estate - A difficult decision to make 8 Apr 2021 (Forum)
My question is - am I worrying overly about this issue, and should I just take the plunge and buy another diesel?  I tend to run my cars to the end of their life rather than trade them in so whatever I will get will probably last me until such time as the position around EVs is a lot clearer in a few years time. Thanks for reading, and hopefully your views will help me to decide which fuel to go for!
  • Renault scenic - MOT fine 25 Jan 2021 (Forum)
A couple of questions regarding MOT fine. Yes I made the mistake of letting my car run out of MOT by I believe 11 days. It was right on top of Xmas, stress levels very high, 2 kids, finding out I was pregnant, I totally forgot. I was driving and got pulled over by the police, who said it was overdue etc.

  • Mazda 6 2.2d sport (2015) - DPF Malfunction warning - worth a manual regen? 22 Oct 2020 (Forum)
So a couple of days ago I get the dreaded 'Soot Accumulation in DPF Too High' message on my 6, which has just had it's 5th birthday and done 40k. Following Mazda's helpful guidance, off for a run down the M23 I go, keeps revs between 2.5-3k. Halfway back the message turns into 'DPF Malfunction', so I presume this means the automatic regen failed. I call the local Mazda garage, who inspect it (well, probably plug in their code reader and charge £120 for the privilege) and tell me that the Throttle Body needs to be replaced and a manual regen tried, but this - after already leaving me £500 odd worse off - doesn't guarantee that it'll fix the problem, and the DPF might need to be replaced anyway.
  • Has anyone used this .. - type of braing. 2 May 2020 (Forum)
With previous cars the handbrake could be used to hold the vehicle until the clutch and accelerator were properly balanced to ensure a smooth pull away, but the electric brake is either full on or full off and can't be used to prevent the car from running backwards while balancing clutch and accelerator as I am used to doing. Can you advise a method of getting this car to pull forwards smoothly when on an upwards slope? Asked on  27 June 2019  by  honjohn  Answered by  Andrew Brady Your 3008 will have hill start assist so there's no need to use the handbrake.
  • Suzuki Baleno - 'Tis the season for contemplation 28 Dec 2019 (Forum)
During yet another cold and rainy day I contemplated the prospect of working on the car to sort out the (common on these) water ingress problems and the ongoing get the engine running right issues. I don't have a garage and find that my back plays up after a short time bent over the engine. I am not very technically skilled. I am considering giving up the unequal struggle and buying a newer car, specifically a Baleno.
  • Skoda and Hyundai - Millers petrol additive. 17 Dec 2019 (Forum)
But I pose the (obvious) question ... am I likely to see ANY sort of difference in an automatic 1.2 petrol Hyunda and a DSG 1.2 petrol Yeti, both of which mainly do short journeys with occasional decent runs?  Might it clean the pipes out a bit? Might I see a tiny improvement in anything?  Was it a total waste of £12.99?
  • Mazda 3 - mazda 3 1.6 diesel oil temp minus 40? 1 Nov 2019 (Forum)
its a 2006 mazda 3 1.6 diesel. since changing the air flow sensor and cleaning the egr valve out and doing the DPF re-gen it is running alot better and the turbo is engaging as it should. i just dont want the DPF to clog up again so want to get this oil temp reading sorted.  Long story short, how does the car get the oil temp reading?
  • Nissan Mica 2004 XS - Nissan Micra Dead Battery Help 23 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Hi All My wife recently bought a Nissan Micra (2004) as a run around car just to use for city driving.. The Battery of the car is not the greatest, as we noticed after not driving it for 5-6 days, it needed a jump start. We again did not drive the car for a 5-6 days as we were away, however on this occasion we are unable to jump start the car because the key fob to open the car does not work.
  • VW Caravelle - Battery 17 Jun 2019 (Forum)
Got a donor car and connected jump leads. with both cars off, the jump leads were getting hot, so removed after approx. 20 seconds. Measured no load voltage again, still 0V. donor car engine not running and ignition off. Tried battery charger again, same result. Measured resistance of between + and - leads with battery disconnected, 900K, so drain on battery from car is 13mA. Guess that might be clock so don't think this is the problem To me the battery is cooked and needs replacement.
  • Mercedes C220 Cdi W203 - Revs limited to around 2000. 1 May 2019 (Forum)
I have been driving it like this since last year when I bought it and 95% of the time its fine at 2000 rpm max as it had bags of torque and a 6 speed manual gearbox and will do 70 mph up most hills, its only when I go up a particularly steep one it causes a problem, changing down doesn't help as you run out of revs. I like the car and it will do 60 mpg+ on the motorway so could live with it as it is, but the full power would be nice occasionally.
  • BMW 3 Series F31 - Standard Diesel Vs Premium Diesel (Tescos Version) 29 Apr 2019 (Forum)
I always use tesco diesel as its the cheapest near me so used this with the hybrogen.  I do long runs every week (Anglesey and back around 145miles each way with mainly A roads and about 30ish miles of dual carriageway).  Having monitored the dpf cycle, i managed to get 315 miles before it regenerated.
  • Renault Grand Scenic - Renault Scenic no parking brake and "no faults"! 17 Mar 2019 (Forum)
I have just tried with the ignition and the service/parking brake on messages keep flashing on and off ( see video here ). When the engine is running the messages are permanent. I have tried the parking brake reset (neutral/ignition hold/parking brake disengage/engage etc) but nothing! There are no sounds from the motors and no response from the switch (the light just flashes red all the time).
  • Corsa 1.3 cdti '08 Plate - Problems with Corsa Intermittent starting winter 23 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Just been seen by another, he has told me the following: He pulled fuel pipe away and turned it over and no fuel being pumped (ignition turning over) so he put on a new fuel pump and tested it, still no fuel present so I know it isn't the fuel pump. Can't be engine related as runs fine when it starts apparently. So he thinks he may be some kind of wire/electric/immoboliser fault!! He said to post on here as best chance is finding someone who has had same issue and resolved it.
  • Windscreen replacement on a modern car 15 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Reading through the long term test reports in November's Top Gear magazine, i came upon the report for the Jag F-Pace being run by Paul Horrel. It centres round something which i'd never really thought about, that of the sensors/cameras/radars, or whatever, most cars have at the top of the widscreen, and specifically, that they need to be re-aimed or re-calibrated during the replacement of the screen.
  • Skoda Octavia - Engine uneven / hesitation 14 Jan 2019 (Forum)
The new spark plugs resolved that and I thought the unevenness had gone as well but maybe that was just my imagination - it seems to be getting worse of late. Any ideas on what could be going on? I did get a garage to run a diagnostic on it but they said that no error codes were showing up. I don't understand how the tools work though; if they were just plugging it in in the workshop with the engine idling then it would be fine - are error codes stored that have been encountered previously or do they get blanked when the engine is turned off?
  • Decisions, decisions 16 Dec 2018 (Forum)
Need to get a replacement car, and have four very different choices. I'll use it for the commute to work and occasional long trip and airport runs (me flying). Would apprecaite any thoughts, i've managed to confuse myself! Thanks 1. • SUV choice: XC60/Kuga/CX-7 12 Nov 2018 (Forum)
I'm not looking for other options really, as it's been done to death thus far; I've narrowed it down to the following: - Volvo XC60 (D5244T* engine, but potentially a DRIVe in the right spec) - Ford Kuga 2.0 TDi Titanium X (or Sport Pack, spec is a bit hard to follow in the ads) - Mazda CX-7 2.2D   These are based on being models available for under £7k (more I save, the more I can spend on the house), with heated seats and potentially nav-level spec, yet having the potential for over 40mpg on a run (real mpg figures are positive on this aspect). The CX-7 is simple, as there isn't really any spec at all - the only choice in the diesel years seemed to be the paint colour.  The Kuga seems to be difficult to find with heated seats, but they exist, and the XC60 seems hard to find in D5 type spec, whilst still retaining the DRIVe simplicity (FWD, lower tuned higher economy engine etc).
  • Vauxhall Corsa 04 plate - Vauxhall ECU installation - a legendary challenge? 16 Aug 2018 (Forum)
Couple of other little easily sorted niggles but we were told we'd need a proper specialist to sort the warning light. Duly took it along to main dealer service outfit for a run on the diagnostics box and we have an error code for the passenger seatbelt pretensioner and another for the airbag ECU. Plus a parts-only quote for 700 quid for the necessary bits. Ringing around the independent Vauxhall outfits and those sharing Opel lineage (around Reading) and no-one seems interested in quoting for the work to fix, or, be willing to fit parts I can source myself.
