  • Ford - 74 petrol Transit backfires. 2 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I have a 1974 ford transit (Landliner campervan) and am having alot of problems with the way its running. I was given a full service at a garage a few months ago, during that service I asked them to check the carb as several people had messed about with it as it had started stalling at every traffic light.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 98 1.25 Zetec Smoky engine 2 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Don't think its blowing but it's a bit loose and needs mounting correctly - It's not used any noticable amount of oil in the 200 or so miles I've driven - It's been filled with fully synthetic 5W/40 for the last few years - Car is a mid-1998 1.25 16v Fiesta Zetec - I've got another 1997 1.25 Fiesta LX that runs perfect I could swap parts from to try Cheers, it's cold so I'll stay inside and plan my next move... • Who has either given or received a car as a gift? 13 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I realised that I should have simply sold it for spares or repair and I would probably have made a small profit. Having said that, I know that several people have been given cars that they have gone on to run for anything from the rest of the MOT to several years.

  • C`Rail misfueling Engineers solutions? 18 Jan 2007 (Forum)
or is it really not wanting to add anything to the cars that highlights the potential weakness of common rail when run on petrol? I`m just a simple home DIY mechanic and have no technical solutions regarding this issue, but thought it may make an interesting topic for some of us to learn from engineers on the forum.
  • Electrical problems Skoda Fabia tdi 7 Sep 2006 (Forum)
We drove to the UK & back, 6000 km inc. running around there and happily tootled around locally here for a total of about 10,000km since the "fix" until the problem re-surfaced a week or so ago. Fault codes do not seem to help as they only record the event, not its basic cause (as far as I can make out) Any ideas?
  • BMW E30 325 - M20 engine problems. 24 May 2006 (Forum)
My friend kept running the car until the 3/4 mark on the temp gauge, which the car reached fairly quickly, at which time some screaching noises were emitted from the engine, so he shut it off pronto. The screaching noises were identical the noises experienced when the car originally broke down.
  • 1982 2.8 Granada Pinking 21 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I am going to pour some redex into the spark plug recesses soon and leave it to soak for a bit, perhaps the engine's a bit coked up, although I would have thought modern fuels would be ok aqnd it get some good motorway runs? Any thoughts would be much appreciated
  • Time for a new battery? (Part ii) Civic 9 Jan 2006 (Forum)
The car does not have an alarm/immobiliser, just a digital clock as far as I can tell - how many mA should I expect to read? What else should I check? Car runs/starts perfectly otherwise, no other symptoms. Any advice/suggestions gratefully received as usual. Ed.
  • 5 car pile up-Now what?? 27 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The Honda Civic Type R , ie the car in front insists that he swerved to one side suddenly to avoid hitting a Mercedes that cut into the roundabout and sped away How true is that is anyones guess! However no problems in running and the bonnet still opens and closes. I have tried to contact my insurers but they are closed for today. Any idea what I should do, apart from contacting the insurers to inform them about the accident and the details of the other cars-thankfully they seem to be insured!
  • what estate for show dogs? 16 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Now before I go & buy another 2nd hand one, has anyone any ideas of anything else I should be looking at please? Oh, I do rather like to run my cars until they eventually grind to a halt, rather than sell 'em, so high mileage capability is pretty important. Besides I prefer to buy a car that's only a few years old, but has higher than average mileage.
  • Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 over fueling 17 Aug 2004 (Forum)
When it 1st happened, I thought I'd broken a timing belt, but after checking the belt, then spark then fuel, the car misteriously started again. But this didn't last long, a couple of minutes running and it had cut out again. I discovered that when it cuts out and wont restart, if you pull the power from the fuel pump and crank the engine, after about 6 turns or so, it starts, reconnect the pump and the car will run, but not very happily.
  • omega climate control 23 May 2004 (Forum)
hi all I have a 1998 omega cdx with climate its 2 years since i had the system serviced but it had been running ok but i thought ihad better get it serviced. I went to a local "Expert" gave me a load of waffle about disinfenctant, tracer dye, and the pollen filter so I told him to carry on. However when i got the car back he had a thermo probe on the dash and it was showing 6 degrees but the fan was on full with the setting at LO I thought ok so i paid him and set of on my merry way.
  • Nissan Primera Engine Management Fault 16 May 2004 (Forum)
Sorry about the long post, but it's been a drawn out saga. It's coming to the point where I feel like scrapping the car, but it runs like new at the times when it's not playing up.
  • Towing 23 Feb 2004 (Forum)
The car was a left hooker, so by placing my V70 to the right of the carriageway, he also had a clear view of the road in front of me, and predicted slight speed adjustment needs, braking, and cornering, very well. Good teamwork. We average 41 MPH in free running, extremly light, traffic, and averaged 23.8MPG. This compares with 29MPG (and middle fifties MPH) that I normally get on this frequently done run, so was not too bad. Made me think though, how far have other backroomers towed another car on a flexible rope (not a towing rod), and what was the experience like?
  • Rover 75 Tourer 14 Jun 2003 (Forum)
    Certainly - don't buy a Rover 75, new, or almost new, with your own money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! An Aston Martin would cost less to run when the 75's depreciation is taken into account!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Paul {Forest of Bowland}
  • Stupid Service Manager cocks it up 17 Jun 2002 (Forum)
It could be likened to a loose catalytic convertor mesh, which completely disappears when the revs are picked up off idle. What I really need is a serpentine belt run diagram from an Autodata manual. I have the petrol one but nothing diesel. I know I should go out and buy one but I want to fix it ASAP. Has anybody got a belt run diagram handy? Failing that, has anybody got an A4 that I could have a pic of the belt, from the top?
  • Do I need a new car? 15 Apr 2002 (Forum)
ve just agreed to spend 1 day a week for the rest of the year (with the possibility of increasing next year) working for a bunch of Internet entrepreneurs who run around in £30,000 status cars. They are prepared to be generous with motor expenses, so I need to decide if a change of vehicle is necessary and if so what would be appropriate particularly as I will be spending 80% of my time servicing my traditional client base.
