  • Mitsubishi RVR - Opinions please 17 May 2006 (Forum)
Is this sluggish as hell or is the 2.0i 16v petrol engine better (but what kind of economy ??) Are the rear seats removable so it can be turned into a mini-van for moving large objects ? Lastly can anyone comment on reliability and spares availablility - are servic eparts eg. filters, pads etc. off the shelf ? Many thanks for the help guys !!!

  • Zafira or New Corolla Verso? 2 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Hi, Expanding family forces me to get into the 7-seater Mini-MPV realm. Am thinking of going for Auto this time as I've noticed that the wife spends a lot of drive time in 3rd gear without really noticing the whining noise coming from the bonnet! I think for me it's got to be either a Zafira 1.8 Auto (prob.
  • Grating brakes on MX-5 5 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I have a problem with my 2001/Y MX-5 1.6 that's driving me potty and I wonder if anyone can help. When braking and steering (for example when turning into a side road or negotiating a mini roundabout), I get a hideous grating, creaking noise from under the car. I can't tell whether it's from the front or back, but it doesn't happen when I brake without steering or steer without braking.

VB" VB - you surely forgot the fake leopard skin interior and 70s afro style hair to go with it :-) What have you all done to your vehicles to make them original? I covered the back and rear wings of a Mini 850 with sailboarding stickers. I wrote XR3i and my initials on a tatty Mk 2 escort, with humbrol model paint. erm that's it. I had a very sheltered life, I never really had the chance, always alone in the playground 'sniff sniff'.
  • Engines, 1960's & Today 9 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Amongst them were old handbooks & maintenance manuals of past owned everyday cars, including Morris Minor, Triumph Herald 12/50, Alfa Romeo Alfasud and Morris Mini cars. Up to the early 1980's cared for engines wore out very quickly, with mediocre lives of approximately 70,000 miles. After this point, engines with much tighter clearances were introduced togeather with early electronic ignition systems.
  • Mini First 1.4 M/Y 2010 - Advice on low impact collision learner driver 2 May 2024 (Forum)
Here goes...   My son has just got his provisional license and has bought himself a Mini First 1.4 on a '10 plate, with his own money which he's worked hard and saved for (no bank of mum and dad used here!).   He has fully comprehensive insurance with a reputable provider and we have started going out for short drives.

  • Oil consumption and regular servicing 9 Jul 2024 (Forum)
On here we often see reports of heavy oil consumption in certain engines - e.g. MINIs.  I am wondering just how much the early servicing history of an engine affects its later life. The 1991 Pug 205 (1.4 petrol) car I got at the end of 2022 from its original owner came with an almost complete servicing history.
  • ? Dunno - C-Channel Chassis Frame Design? 31 Dec 2022 (Forum)
only one I can think of would be the BL Sherpa chassis-cabs, as used in the BT workshop trucks, with a demountable back box. Sort of a mini-lorry. Not many of them left. Anything else? I THINK early pickup versions of the Toyota Zace might be C-channel, i(ronic since you only find them in markets where corrosion isn't an issue) so maybe some other Toyotas (Hilux?)
  • 1.4 TSI DSG - Skoda Octavia advice 27 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Budget: 10k [Stretch to 13k]  Our day to day driving will be lots of very short [under 3 mile] trips so we are looking at a petrol. We want something reliable after a couple of years of garage bills with my 17yr old MINI. We enjoy fairly regular camping/day hiking trips in the Lake District [100 mile round trip] and will want to continue with this, so need a fairly well sized car with a good boot.  In light of this we've been looking at Skoda Octavias, and have drifted slightly above budget to the likes of this; https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202103250579510?
  • Ford Fiesta - MK7 TDCI Turbo failure 7 Jun 2020 (Forum)
Ive heard lots of horror stories about the turbos failing on the engine due to the engineering between the hoses, the sump and the turbo (its the same as in the mini, pug hdi, citroen etc ive been told?) From what ive read it seems that they are "garrett" (if ive spelt right) turbos. However.....

  • Review: Dyson V6 cordless vacuum 19 Jan 2018 (Forum)
I have a previous version of this mini Dyson, and although it's fine in general terms there are distinct disadvantages when using in a car. You need to buy the additional really stiff brush otherwise the soft brush supplied merely tickles the dust and has no chance of lifting animal hairs or other bits stuck in carpets.

  • Various - Car purchase add ons 21 Oct 2014 (Forum)
I have been interacting with several dealers whilst selecting the vehicle, in general spending quite a bit of time in particular with a Mini dealer, Audi dealer, and two or three different Fiat/Alfa dealers, before finding the right car (a near mint Giulietta). What is interesting to me and the purpose of this posting is all the add on products they offer at time of sale closure.
  • ANY - How much on list price for an extra real 5mpg? 1 Oct 2014 (Forum)
For the purposes of your 'cost benefit analysis please assume: * the cost of unleaded petrol as £1.30 per litre * your typical annual mileage is 12,000 miles * the effect of the improvement does not reduce the VED CO2 band  So as an example, for a typical super-mini offering a real world 'basic trim' fuel economy of 10 miles per litre as reported in real world tests, such as True MPG (What Car) or as reported by many owners/readers in the Real MPG (Honest John) database,  the annual fuel cost would be £1560 at 10 mpl (45.5 mpg) or £142 less if the average mpl was sustained at 11 miles per litre (49.5 mpg).
  • Ford Transit (2001) - Transist 2.0TDDi running fault 13 Feb 2011 (Forum)
The van also feels under powered and a bit flat all the time, it will go along at 70-75mph ok when empty but seems to work hard to get it there and I used the van the other day to tow a classic mini on a 4 wheeled trailer and it couldnt maintain 50mph on the motorway. I have spoken to a diesel specialist and have been told that this sympton sounds like a bent con rod which i find hard to believe as surely for this to happen it must have to have valve to piston contact or it must of hydrauliced.
  • Nissan Note / Mazda 3 - recommend - Nissan Note vs. Mazda 3 9 May 2010 (Forum)
My thoughts on the two:- Nissan Note Advantages:- 1) Good fuel economy 2) Bigger size than a typical super-mini (better safety) 3) Decent reliability Concerns:- 1) Smaller than a compact car (Mazda 3). Hence safety and motorway driving characterisitics may be inferior. 2) Nissan less reliable than Mazda, as per car reliability index stats.
