Reducing the cost Personal Injury claims 14 Dec 2005 (Forum)
The following is a copy on an article in today?s Sunday Telegraph by Teresa Hunter in the Money and Jobs section. It is not available online, so I have retyped it for the Backroom. The cost of motor cover and other insurance will fall under radical plans to overhaul the personal injury claims system. -
Thoughts from America 30 Sep 2005 (Forum)
A couple of annoyances, wind noise around the sunroof/roof bars at 50mph plus also the "tiptronic" type auto transmission allows low gears to be held at higher speeds though not high gears to be held at lower speeds, i.e. selecting "2" in fact allows the transmission to use either "1" or "2", selecting "3" allows the transmission to use either "1" "2" or "3" etc, hence one cannot use the V8's torque to increase speed, any reasonable prod of the accelerator results in a rather more urgent kick down than really necessary. A few years ago a visit to the 'states prospered very few genuinely interesting cars the average "yank tank" being a wallowing gas guzzler however it is clear now that there are some great cars available in the US that we do not see in Europe, the Acura (Honda's premium brand) TL and RL 4WD are great lookers and with 258 bhp 3.2 and 300 bhp 3.5 V6's they go a bit too. -
Nearly new car running very badly 12 May 2005 (Forum)
I've posted elsewhere in the past, but the topic always seems to move on to 'don't put up with it' support and away from the actual problem, and while I'm grateful, believe me if there is any way I can get this sorted, I will! If I had cast-iron, 'always there' problems I'd be fine, but its s**'s law that the car always works when in the garage! Many thanks for your time. -
Discovering the joys of diesel 14 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Deciding to go from one end of the spectrum to the other (and the car I had before the 528 was a Jap import 220bhp Prelude Type-S) - I traded the 528 in against a '99 Peugeot 106 1.5 diesel, well, I say traded in, it was a straight swap. The 106 was up at £3795, included in the swap was a full service (which I got a new power steering pump out of) and 6 months warranty (music to my ears). -
A dilemma 21 Jan 2004 (Forum)
She is absolutely revving the nuts of the thing, probably driving forward in 3rd or 5th gear. She starts to reverse into the space behind me. I say to my wife, quick, let?s get out of here before she hits us - but I can't go forward because of the car parked in front of me. And the old dear is getting closer and closer behind! I hop out of the car to see if I can prevent her getting any closer....but too late. -
Doing it yourself!! 10 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Whatever the case, I can say in all honesty that I would never, ever have got to the root cause of the VW?s loss of power. Not with a diagnostic machine, not with a crystal ball and not with the help of Merlin. Would you? -
Times report - speed cameras leading to higher ac 12 Mar 2002 (Forum)
In January the Metropolitan Police switched more than 300 traffic officers to tackling street crime. Edmund King, the RAC Foundation?s executive director, said: ?Speed cameras will not catch drivers who tailgate, overtake dangerously, talk on mobile phones and many other potentially fatal actions. In many areas the number of police on duty keeping the roads safe is almost zero.? -
16 important OIL questions answered! 8 Jan 2013 (Forum)
So an engine filled with 10W/40 will be running on a viscosity of 14 at 100C, but with a sump temperature of 90C its seeing a viscosity of 18, so as far as the engine is concerned it?s running on SAE 50. Likewise, at 110C, it?s down to 11 Centistokes so it ?thinks? it?s on a SAE 30! (Which is preferable.) The lesson is, do not use power and fuel-wasting thick oils in cool climates. -

Suzuki Swift - Gear selection problems. Oil light on 20 Aug 2025 (Forum)
He had the sense to check the oil level and this was to just under the max level on the dipstick. Following a weekend of partying in Kent he raced back to S Wales and left the car with me I have today dropped the car off with our trusted local tech who is going to have a look at it tomorrow. Driving it to the garage the engine was nice and smooth ( very good news). -

Jap imports 8 Oct 2023 (Forum)
The other question I had was to do with paperwork, I can't do VIN/registration checks to see their full history, so I am concerned that if one has been in a crash however minor or severe will this appear on my log book as a CAT S/N? Also once the IVA test has been completed does this note onto the new UK logbook that the car is now an import? Do these cars loose much value as they are imported? -
Hmmmm 26 Jun 2023 (Forum)
I’ve seen a 66 plate 30kw Mk I Nissan Leaf for sale locally(ish) for £8,200 - before I kick him with my size 9’s. Say I get it for £8,000 tops (I’d be aiming for £7,700) that works out at around £150 a month for a bank loan. Now, currently I spend around £160 a month on fuel for old Terrance the Toyota plus £250 a year to tax him and he’s getting old and probably will need some money spending over the next 4/5yrs. -
Skoda Fabia Mk III Estate - Screenwashers Not Working 21 Dec 2022 (Forum)
One or two other bits of the handbook are poorly translated, maybe this is another example. The fuse is a tiny little 7.5amp job and nothing in my kit(s) matches however there was a 10amp in the Berlingo's spare bulb etc kit of the same profile. Pushed that in and all is good. It will do as a temporary measure and Mrs B will pop into Halfords for a 7.5 amp one later - we cannot both be out as a delivery is expected. -

Is it fair to assume that when a car is advertised without any comment on its service history, either there is no history or it's very 'part-history'? -

Ford Galaxy - Ford Powershift Class Action in the UK? 10 Jul 2022 (Forum)
Led me to finding lots of complaints and issues about this gearbox and finding out about the successful class actions in USA, Australia and Canada. Ford wanted to replace my gearbox for big £'s but I have found someone, who more or less makes a living off fixing powershifts, who will repair it for a lot less than Ford wants... (he also told me he thinks there are two design faults in the gearbox... so he thinks my gearbox will break again, in time... -
