  • Audi A4 B7 (2005 - 2008) - 07 2.0 Fluids mix-up advice 7 Jun 2009 (Forum)
This had happened over weeks ago! I asked if the steering had felt different but she reported that the car is running fine. The engine still had oil in it so I'm sure that'll be fine, but its the PAS system that I'm concerned about. Obviously the system will need draining but will this episode have caused expensive damage?
  • Toyota RAV-4 (1994 - 2000) - 96 2.0 MoT Emissions failure - strange results? 13 May 2009 (Forum)
The '0' result for both CO and HC implies a remarkably clean exhaust, though the lambda figure does imply that the engine is running lean, so perhaps a low CO reading would be expected. I gather that the second fast idle test is only performed to give the car a 'second chance' - so why are the figures so vastly different? In particular, the lambda value now indicates a rich mixture - which might explain the high CO figure.
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 99 1.2 Engine sounds unhealthy chain? - video incl 10 May 2009 (Forum)
Oil was changed 280 miles ago. It is a high quality recording and through my HIFI seperates it sounds like the engine is running in my room. http://s167.photobucket.com/albums/u141/amazingtrade/?action=view¤t=05052009001.flv Thanks I just don't know if I should be worried or not.
  • Difficult to buy a new car 3 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Gently pushed him again after a week, and again was told he would get back to me and nothing, so in my book lost sale - no third chances! Citroen C5 is also in the running. First dealership was to busy to even acknowledge me so I left. Requested brochure from website to which I get a letter to tell me they are out of brochures for C5 so they suggest I read the website or try the dealer who was to busy to speak with me.....
  • Skoda Fabia (2000 - 2007) - Fabia vrs turbo failure 27 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I will also be pursuing Skoda for good will as I have a lot of mechanical sympathy. I have never thrashed the car from cold, I always allow a few minutes idle at the end of a run and use 4500rpm a few times a week when warm to clear the muck out. I thought this was a reliable turbo set up and the AA guy said it is rare. As I say it is a whine at idle building to a scream when the car is taken off idle. there was no smoke or blow up and the car starts ok.Anyone had the same problem and anyone got some advice?
  • Police complaint - should I or shouldn't I 27 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I live in a village complete with a village school. I tend to leave for work just as the morning school run is dropping off. You can imagine the dreadful and inconsiderate parking that goes on. On top of that, it's recently been well publised that our blanket 20 mph speed limit is unenforceable and we must be revert to a 30 limit.

  • BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - 5 Series - Which engine and spec 1 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I am tending towards the petrol models, but is there any overriding reason why I should get a diesel, or are petrol models more reliable/cheaper to run (fuel apart)? Does anyone have a recommendation on what is the best engine/spec to get? I was thinking along the lines of a 523i SE, which seems to be a reasonable compromise of 30+mpg with 170bhp and most of the ones I've seen online have decent kit as standard.
  • Vauxhall Zafira B (2005 - ) - 05 1.6 When does my car require a new cambelt? 23 Feb 2009 (Forum)
We bought it from Vauxhall last year so want to take it to a main dealer for it's service just before the warranty runs out, just incase they find anything terminal! Anyway, booked it in and they told us the 4th service is a 'big one'. Great!! We were then told it would need the cambelt changed??? Bearing in mind it's got low mileage and is only 4yrs old I think this is crazy!
  • Volvo C30 (2006 - 2009) - Life with a Volvo C30 22 Jan 2009 (Forum)
The C30 is an R Design Sport SE with the D5 engine. Pulls like a train and whilst I admit I live in a rural part of Scotland, any runs of any length will easily return over 50mpg. It is even more economical than my V50 which has the 2.0D engine. Yes the boot space is nowhere near as big as the S60. However it will take the weeks' shopping no problem.
  • Citroen C1 (2005 - ) - C1s and floods 20 Jan 2009 (Forum)
They are virtually brand new, but have suffered various degrees of water ingress into the engine bay while just sitting there. After which the cars electronics just declare something like "immobilier fault" and won't run. The people selling these never seem to get them fixed, and the cars eventually go for about £2000 less than what might otherwise be a reasonable price. Does anyone know why these cars seem to be so willing to die completely if too much water gets under the bonnet, and what the cost would be to fix them.
  • Choice modifications to a Ford Focus. 9 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Any other tips on how to get this car back to its best, it has been sitting around for years doing nothing but short runs. Anything that can be done in the engine dept? Is it best to order the parts I can on the net for the service too? Loads available from sellers on eBay.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 325i v 330d 24 Dec 2008 (Forum)
So its the extra £2.5k extra outlay for the 330d versus the fuel savings I'll get in 5 years. Anyone got a rough idea which would be cheaper to run after 5 years? I'm more interested in the drive of the car. The 330d's torque at 410nm beats the 325i at 245nm but its still adequate (similar to my tdci but with much more power). Would a car like the 325i need revving to get decent performance (not like a type r surely?
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 97 1.4 Intermittent struggling to pull until warm 19 Nov 2008 (Forum)
It started a few days later and I drove 4 miles to the garage keeping it on very high revs and avoiding going up hill to prevent it stalling. After about 3 miles it was running pretty normally. The garage replaced the light bulbs and found it started and ran fine. Since then it's been generally starting OK but sometimes with the same struggle to start and I can feel the jerkyness and lack of pull occassionally.
  • Peugeot 407 (2004 - ) - 2005 2.0 hdi 136 cracking/popping noise 5 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I also have a ''problem'' with the whole snip engine....one of the engine mounts(support)might be loose i think, and when I start the car,if you look at the engine compartment, the whole thing shakes like it wants to start running...Is that normal with the 407s? Don't have any friends with this kind of car,so i can't check... And last problem....when going over the speed bumps(i live in london,so have plenty of those ),i hear some kind of noise which i think it comes from the suspension...sounds like stretched rubber,if that makes any sense....any1 else experiencing the same problems?
  • I love cars but buying them is hell 20 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I run a business and I am a very busy person, but I am not exactly rich so cannot afford to spend a lot on a car, especialy as I still need to spend a lot on public transport. I love cars so much, I spend far too much time talking about them down the pub much to the annoyance of my mates :p:.

  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.6 Misfire - advice needed! 11 Sep 2008 (Forum)
After I picked the car up it was miles better but when I put my foot to the floor there still seems to be a hesitation/power loss but the engine light isn't on. I've spoken to the garage and he says to run it over the weekend to see if there's any change and if not bring it in and they'll put it back on the computer to see if anything comes up. Is it likely to be a problem with the coil pack, or does anyone have any other ideas/advice?
  • Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 2002 1.8 Inlet Manifold 15 Aug 2008 (Forum)
The fault codes that came up with the computer diagonstics are: P0120, P0220, P1550, P0100, P0110. The garage say that I have a cracked inlet manifold. They showed me a hairline crack running along the side. Any advice? Are the error codes consistent with a cracked inlet manifold? Do I need to address this urgently? The garage said they have cleaned the throttle body, which seems to have stopped the nearly cutting out problem for now.
  • Volkswagen Passat (1988 - 1997) - S reg. 1.8T auto: any use over 100k? Price? 6 Aug 2008 (Forum)
That engine is certainly very nice in another friend's Skoda, but with an autobox may turn out a bit thirsty for suburban running about. And assuming it has been properly serviced - something I urged my friend to look into very thoroughly - how long would such an engine and its turbo last? I urged him to take his time and told him I would seek advice, but that the car sounded a little dear to me, and may have expensive work coming up.
