  • Buyerfuel 26 Sep 2009 (Ask HJ)
I have recently returned from a holiday in France and found that many filling stations (especially Shell and Elf) are now selling Sans Plomb 95 - E10 fuel...
  • Pumper cards 25 Apr 2009 (Ask HJ)
In British Columbia, the provincial government has passed what is called Grant's Law. A few years ago Grant DePatie was employed at a gas station and tried...
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Keep or replace? 9 Feb 2008 (Forum)
The problem is, they now have a place in Spain that they visit every six weeks or so, driving down through France, and the car needs to be suitable for this. They fill about 80% of the Mondeo with the seats down, and she is considering downsizing to Focus/Civic size. I think there's probably no point in doing this as she'd not actually get as good a car, but she would rather have a smalller one to park and go about in in the week.
  • Renault Talisman 160 edc Initiale Paris estate - Left Hand Drive Car Insurance 1 May 2021 (Forum)
One insurance company has offered to insure the car based on its VIN number whilst it is transferred onto British plates, but the cost is nearly £700 for the first year’s insurance. I do have maximum no claims in France.
  • French hotel/motel chain recommendation needed 6 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Hi, The family are off to France first week of June,  La Rochelle, and to break up the long drive each way we plan to take an extra day getting there and and another extra day getting back. Going via calais, we are looking for a motel/hotel near Rouen  and another motel/hotel about an hour's drive from calais for th return journey.
  • How civilised is Newhaven? 15 Jul 2008 (Forum)
We need to do a quick Blighty run this week from France and we are tempted to use the Dieppe-Newhaven crossing with Transmanche Ferries - seems cheap and convenient. Only problem is - the return ferry leaves Newhaven at 7am on Saturday and we don't know the area.
  • Question about car prices in the 1960s. 17 Apr 2008 (Forum)
And since some of the cars were French, what would the respective prices have been had we been buying in France?
  • Autoroutes v Motorways 14 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Having just returned from another driving trip to France, about the twelth in the last few years, I am again amazed at the difference between Autoroutes and Motorways. In the 250 miles or so between my home in Glossop and Dover I encountered about 5 or 6 sets of roadworks, the one on the M1 near Luton, where 3 lanes came down to 1, added at least one hour to the journey.
  • Volkswagen - No PD Oil In French Supermarkets? 30 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Been on my annual 3 week tour of France. Yet again looked at the shelves for this mythical cheap PD engine oil. In around 6 large supermarkets/hypermarkets. No luck - even the best spec diesel oil seems to meet a very old pre PD VW spec.
  • Travelling to Brittany 3 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Hi to you all, We are travelling to Lorient in southern Brittany this coming Saturday the 4th. Does any one have experiance of driving in France on what may be one of the busiest days of the year for French traffic? Our ferry arrives in Calais at 10.30am French time. I have printed out a ViaMichelin route which caculates the 435 mile journey to take 6hr 30mins with no breaks using mainly toll motorways.
  • Cannonball Run 12 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Just been watching French TV (LCI news channel) and had a giggle at two English lads stopped by the Gendarmes near Bethune,France. They got caught at 190 and 250 Km/h in a Ferrari Modena and Porsche 911 during an organised "Cannonball Run" from the UK to Italy. The LCI chain claims that the Kent Police tipped-off the Gendarmes who set-up the speed traps with helicopter back-up.
  • Europe and spare tyres 24 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Afternoon all, I'll probably regret asking a question about Europe, but... I'm planning on going down to Europe for two weeks in the summer, mainly France, but possibly Austria, Germany, Swizerland and Italy as well. I've just read on another thread that in Spain, it's law that you have a spare tyre. Is this true in any other countries? I've got an Accord, and don't have a spare tyre, just a stupid foam inflator thing, so could be a bit of a problem.
  • I have a question Volume 53 23 Sep 2004 (Forum)

  • Off on my french hols 5 Jul 2004 (Forum)
As is customary for this time of year I was wondering if any BRs had any new advice on driving through France this year. We are heading down to Beziers via Beaune from Calais via A6,A7 & A9. Anybody got any new tips from their recent journeys (or good repeat ones from last year - when similiar questions were asked).
  • Cross Channel Ferry Prices Slashed 28 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Went to book a day-trip to France and notice that all cross channel comapnies on the Dover Calais route have slashed their prices. Aparantley this follows a move by Eurotunnel. For example we booked in January for a 17 day trip in August and were happy with the quote of £162.
  • Puncture Repaired Tyre 9 Dec 2003 (Forum)
My question is though - is the repaired tyre, which is now on the front, safe to use for an extended drive? I am due to drive through France next week, covering about 1500 motorway miles in 3 days - (return journey!) The tread on the tyres are fine, but I was just wondering whether other BRs would get new fronts fitted before this drive.
  • Air Con recharge 19 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Think it was last done at a service in 2001 before I had it. Just interested to know as we're taking it to south of france next week and don't want to be left boiling. Also note that Audi no longer check the system as part of routine servicing. Got a leaflet through form the dealer offering a check up and re-gas at an 'unbeatable' £99.
  • Van purchase advice 18 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Odd question for you. I've got to get a transit size van load of stuff from Bristol to near Toulouse (SW France)and rather than renting one and having to drive it back and fly out (we're moving there) I'm thinking of buying a very cheap van and scraping it when I get there. I was thinking a old Renault Traffic or similar - it will need one month MOT and Tax and as long as it has one last journey in it I'll buy it.
  • Driven 11 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Other bloke not quite so arrogantly "fifth-form cool". Intellegent coverage of a real journey to The South of France in affordable yet attractive cars. Well done! How refreshing! RIP Top Gear? Has it finally disappeared up its own tailpipe? rg
  • Strange French Custom 2 Jul 2001 (Forum)
I've been told that this is to keep the windscreen intact, but can it possibly serve any purpose? Do any other nationalities do this? Incidentally, I lived in France for a while and the vast majority of drivers did this, young and old (and front seat passengers), so it's not based on the habits of one or two people. I've never seen a Brit do it. Can anyone enlighten me?
