  • Jaguar mystery 31 May 2006 (Forum)
Pulling off any of the front three leads resulted in the car missing as one would expect. I thought it might be severely coked up and the explanation might be red-hot carbon around the exhaust valve seats in those three cylinders. But he said the car would start and run from cold with those leads disconnected.
  • Vauxhall - 97 1.6 16v Ecotec. When to replace H T Leads? 4 May 2002 (Forum)
Have 1.6 16v Ecotec that is 5 years old and done 105,000 miles with no problems. Starts and runs fine but I'm wondering if I should replace the H T leads. How long do they last? I can remember the subject coming up here many moons ago and advice being given on measuring the resistance of each lead. Do they gradually deteriorate over time, so that you don't notice a loss of performance?
  • What lead additive can you suggest for our 1977 MG Midget? 12 Feb 2018 (Ask HJ)

  • HT Leads (expiring?) Polo 6 May 2005 (Forum)
A while ago, when I had trouble with the distributor, it was suggest to me (by Peter D I do believe) that the HT leads on these Polo?s are prone to developing high resistances and should be measured. So I have done just that. After a 25 minute drive, I pulled one and out measured the resistance. It should have been 5 Ohms, but this lead was 5.6.
  • BMW 5-Series E61 Touring (2004 - ) - BMW iDrive: USB/iPod cable/ functionality query 4 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I understand I can just use a standard aux lead for play back through the hi fi and I am not too bothered about having all the functionality via the iDrive but don't know whether there is a cheaper pattern lead available that provies some or similar functionality, or whether I have to cough up for the BWM lead?
  • Ford Mondeo 1.8 zetec (52 plate) - passenger seat lead 16 Oct 2010 (Forum)
This cable is quite long - approx 2.5 metres, blue in colour and has a 13-pin connector head and seems to go into the console housing by the handbrake. can anyone tell me what this is and if / where it should be connected, or is it just the lead for hooking the computer up to a diagnostic machine?   TIA

  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate - Instrument panel gone blank 9 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I got this advice from anther page on this site, can anyone confirm it is safe and worthwhile attempting? "Disconnect the earth(negative/minus sign)lead only and run a jump lead > from the detached earth lead to the positve/plus terminal of the battery > and leave it attached for 5 mins. Under no circumstances allow the > detached earth lead to touch the vacant earth terminal of the battery" I have checked the fuses and to the best of my limited knowledge they look OK.
  • Ford C-MAX (2003 - 2010) - 2005 1.6 Petrol Zetec Jump leads connected wrongly 26 Jan 2008 (Forum)
She suspected flat battery so tried jump starting it off other car but smoke appeared so she stopped and called AA. AA realised that she had connected jump leads up the wrong way round and a fuse had blown. He got car started OK but suggested it goes straight to a garage to make sure nothing has been damaged due to connecting the leads up incorrectly. Car is at her indie she uses but can't look at it until Monday.

  • 89 polo stalling... update 4 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Keith wrote: >> These cars always seem to have their original plug leads when I have looked at them. But when people do replace them with cheap aftermarket items they forget that the plugs now need the little screw on tops that are not required for the original leads. This may not cause a huge problem until something else is slightly out and then the problem will be eggagerated.

  • unleaded petrol 22 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Heard today that unleaded petrol may be worse for the atmosphere than leaded. I'm no scientist but I am given understand the benzine causes more damage than the lead......anyone with any real knowledge on this?
  • Jump Start Puzzle 24 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Battery on parents car (Proton 1.5 'thing') died overnight, it's all sorted now, bought and fitted a new one for them. But trying to start it from my car using jump leads still resulted in it turning over slowly and not firing. This was with the battery out on charge, with jump leads from my car directly onto the Proton's battery leads. When a new battery was fitted it fired up first time.
  • Cat damage with leaded petrol 13 Aug 2005 (Forum)
With reference to a Q & A in last week's HJ Telegraph column from someone planning to drive to North Africa, what would be the physical effect of using leaded petrol in a catalysed vehicle? At some point the active material in the cat is presumably neutralised or destroyed and it has to be replaced to meet the MoT test, but are there any side effects such as bad running or confusion for the ECU once the damage is done?

  • Spark Plugs-blue flashes visible. Astra 25 May 2005 (Forum)
Now I've just been out to the car (it is 12am) and very dark, cold and damp, so I thought I'd check to see if there was any High Voltage arking coming from the HT leads and I noticed I could see intermittent small blue flashes coming from the area where the end of the HT leads make contact with the spark plugs. The sparking seems to be occuring across all the HT lead contacts just above the spark plugs.
