  • Passat V6 strange starting issue help? 30 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Hi I have a 98 Passat V6 Syncro and it has a strange random starting issue? The car runs great with no issues or fault codes stored etc but every now and again when I come to start it it fires OK but then cuts out and struggles to start i.e. turns over very slowly and queitly (Like a flat Battery but this is not the case) and to start it I will need to hold the throttle to the floor and keep turning it over until it fires, may take 2-3 attempts as soon as it has started it runs very rougth but when settled down runs great again with no issues???
  • Sprinter water leak 30 May 2006 (Forum)
I have a 2000 Mercedes Sprinter 311 cdi van. 270000 miles. Runs extremely well but is losing water about one litre per 100 miles. I have checked for external leaks, for telltale marks around hose joints, radiator, heater matrix and water pump, nothing, I have had the system pressurised to 21 lb, about three times normal and run the engine for about ten minutes at about 2700 rpm with no fluctuation in pressure evident and no external obvoius leaks being forced.
  • MGF VVC - fan keeps running 21 Apr 2006 (Forum)
My local (non-MG) garage fitted a new radiator which works fine but they have pointed out that the secondary fan is running constantly. Their electrician has sent the ECU away for testing (come back OK) and suggests that the VVC unit is causing a "spike" which is interfering with the electrical circuits and causing the fan to remain on all the time.
  • Mondeo hard ride 22 Mar 2006 (Forum)
We run two Mondeo TDCI 130ps Ghia estates doing long run airport transfers. One is a Ghia the other a Ghia X.The guy running the Ghia X is suffering with back pains since having this car and has been advised by his doctor that it is caused by the new car change hard ride.
  • Xantia 1.8 Petrol idling erratically 4 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I found some petrol in my garage, which I thought was unleaded and put this in. I also put another 5 lites in the following morning. Since then it has been running like a pig. I am wondering whether I should have left this petrol in my garage well alone as I couldn't be absolutely sure of it origin. I cleaned the plugs and put another 4 or 5 litres of unleaded in and it does run better, but still not as well as it did.
  • Renault Clio 1.4RT 98> 25 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Peeps, been having intermittant problem for far too long now, i'll explain: My clio 1.4RT runs fine, starts fine, all ECU sensors fine. However if you go out for a run and the engine gets hot, then you sit on low idle for a while (for example sitting in a queue for a car park, far to often where I live) the ECU "dumps" its throttle setting and starts to Idle at 1400rpm.
  • VX Omega 2.5 V6 Headgasket probs 26 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I renewed the gaskets, cambelt( inc tentioners) and had the heads skimmed. i put it all back together and found it didnt run. I checked the timing and its exact, and also compression. I have a consistant reading of 130 psi on all 6 cyl. The car will run on all 6 cyl but requires a lot of cranking to start it, it wont idle either. runs sweet when started.
  • New brake pads run-in? 22 Oct 2003 (Forum)
The brake pedal 'bites' so high now (comparatively) that I kept stopping meters before where I intended to!! Anyway, having to travel this weekend, I wanted to know if I have to run-in the brakes before I can safely 'step on it', without causing damage. In that case I could drive the first part of my journey 'conservatively' (low speeds - light braking) to give a chance to the pads to 'bed-in'.
  • Avensis Diesel 1 Oct 2003 (Forum)
So far (2 days) I'm very pleased with it (changed from a VW Passat TDI Sport - 115bhp), but am looking for advice on the following: 1. What is the best way to run the car in? Do I need to run it in? Looking to get good mpg and reasonable performance in the long run. 2. The fuel guage looks to be a bit eratic - doesn't move for ages, then drops very quickly.
  • Dynamic cooling problem 17 Sep 2003 (Forum)
The car can stand for a week without water loss. There is no evidence of any exturnal leak during and after a run. The system appears to be under full pressure when hot and stays so until cool! The car runs well, but continues to use water! I should perhaps mention that flushing and RadSeal has been tried. Has any one out there experience a similar problem?
  • Running in a Rotary engine/RX8 29 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Interestingly though whilst there is much information on the net regarding rotary engines (partic Japan and the US where the RX7 has been popular and sold in reasonable numbers) I cannot find a single article on how one of these engines should be run in. Any comments people? Also the newer rotary engines seem to have a much better reliability record - can anyone comment on this?
  • Audi 80 lumpy idling 19 Feb 2002 (Forum)
My 1986 Audi 80 1.6 petrol (Pierburg 2E2 carburettor with automatic choke)is running well when the engine is under load (i.e. it goes well when you have your foot on the accelerator), and runs well when it is cold (the automatic choke keeps the revs high). When the engine has warmed up, it still runs well under load, but when it is idling it is very lumpy and occasionally stalls.
  • Cmax grand - Ford C-Max grand won’t run 12 Mar 2019 (Forum)
A mechanic quoted me 350 to install the engine, I bought a replacement cam belt kit, water pump and a clutch release bearing. The mechanic installed the engine but the car just won’t run, it cranks but does not start, mechanic then gave me a bill for 450 because it took an extra day (even though it does not work ??) another mechanic now has car and has changed the fuel pump and injectors have been primed, various sensors and senders replaced, swapped the fuel injection pump and injectors over and it still doesn’t run.
  • Peugeot 306 - Pug 306 1.9td rough running, white smoke etc... 29 Apr 2010 (Forum)
My 97 306 1.9td started running rough and smoking a little on my way home the other day, it was then hard to start and the level of smoke had increased as had the rough running. A mechanic friend took a look and thought it to be contaminated fuel ( he poured a bit on the floor, chucked a match on it, and it went up instantly) I have definatley only put diesel in it so my only thought would be that the fuel that i put in was dodgy from the pumps - tesco said they have not had any other complaints.
  • BMW E21 - distributor and poor running 30 Jun 2007 (Forum)
    s possible that this closeness (probably only 5mm) between the metal surround of the cap and the leads is leading to the bad running? Any thoughts at all would be really appreciated ? I?m deeply confused? Many thanks! James {Subject header amended to include car details - DD}
  • Vauxhall Astra Hatchback 1.6 8v 2004 - New car troubles 18 Jan 2019 (Forum)
I just bought a new car (well new to me) and it has a few issues. Basically it reports the wrong temp, the cars running fine and I just fitted a new thermostat like a hour ago and it still runs reports cold however the heating is boiling, the engine has a tapping noise however I have been told it’s just noisy tappets and not to worry unless it’s actually affecting the car, I found mayo on the oil cap so I replaced the thermostat as many people say to do, the engine management light flashes when pushing the engine however the car isn’t running slow or even rough if anything the cars very nippy, no white smoke or power loss however the engine can run rough after giving it a bit of stress and it’s got bubbles going into the water tank however I’m quite sure it’s not losing any coolant and there’s no oil in the coolant.
  • Vauxhall Zafira B 2014 1.8 petrol - Running rough, engine light on, juddering 3 Sep 2018 (Forum)
On driving off the car started juddering as if it was the clutch, but the engine light came on and it continues to run roughly, sounding like it's running on three cylinders. It's at its worst when pulling off from a standing start - juddering badly and a slight clattering noise. I've driven it about four miles since it happened, but am obviously very relectant to use it again.
  • Mercedes E Class estate 2015 - Mercedes DPF problems 23 Jan 2016 (Forum)
I have been told by Mercedes that a light will come on and then it has to go into Mercedes for a re-generation. A run will not make the warning light go back to normal. Do all Mercedes diesel drivers have to go on a run? Some Mercedes garages have said there service depts are full of cars needing regenerations and some say none.
  • Ford Mondeo Zetec Mark 3 - Manufactured Dec 2006 - Car Interior Motor Running Sound 10 May 2013 (Forum)
I have noticed that when I turn on the ignition but don't start the car I can hear something like a small motor running.  This sound is very quiet and is coming from somewhere behind the dashboard, but it is definitely there. This may-well be completely normal and absolutely nothing to be concerened about.
  • X Type 2.0d 2005 - Help 16 Feb 2013 (Forum)
The Injectors were tested. 2&3 leaking but not replaced. The starting problem had gone away after the ECR was done, but smooth running hadn't. Most of the time it's flying but then I can tell that it's not running at optimum. Just as I was rebuilding confidence that I could drive again without losing power i'm right back to square one.
