Clio petrol pump 22 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Daughter's friend brought round a 1.2 Clio S-reg today with a very noisy petrol pump. Renault dealer says £350 to replace while independent local garage says around £240. The dealer says the flow of fuel is within spec so the pump operation is OK apart from what sounds like mechanical (but plasticky) noise. -
Deep throaty Rover 17 Feb 2003 (Forum)
1) Please don\'t post the same thing in both Discussion and Technical Matters. Its pointless and wastes people\'s time. In addition, this is a subject for Technical Matters so I have deleted it from Discussion. 2) Please use mixed case. All upper case is regarded as shouting and not polite on the web. 3) Meaningful titles will tend to get you help much more quickly. -
Merc E Class problems 6 Feb 2003 (Forum)
My wife has a 25,000m E320CDi (9/2000 vintage)with a few problems, neither of which the dealer has been able to find. First one is a strange 'flapping' noise from the O/S rear wheel, which appears intermittently when pulling away. We've checked the tyres etc. Lastly, the steering intermittently groans around the centre line at all speeds. If you turn off the engine and restart it often disappears for the next few days, especially if the dealer starts it up,,,,, As an aside, do any other readers have a disintegrating carpet? -
New small car choice 27 Jan 2003 (Forum)
My girlfriend is currently trying to decide what model of small car to buy, with a view to replacing it in three years when the warranty runs out. We... -
Motoring Joke 8 Dec 2002 (Forum)
He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tyres! So I called him a piece of horse s**t. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket for a cracked windshield. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote. -
Ford remote locking keys 29 Nov 2002 (Forum)
How can I prove whether it is the key or the car that is faulty? Does anything need "reprogramming to make it work again? Can anyone explain in layman`s terms how this remote system works? If it is the key that is faulty , how do I obtain a new one...presumably from the local Ford dealer....and what sort of price is it? note: The only other key that I posess for this car is "Red" in colour and I was told that this is essential in order to obtain a replacement key. -
White line fever 14 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Interesting story in today\'s http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2002/11/13/nline13.xml&sSheet=/news/2002/11/13/ixhome.html about an experiment in reverse psychology conducted by Wiltshire County Council. Apparently, whenever stretches of road are resurfaced the white lines in the centre of the road will not be repainted. -
306 D Turbo - again! 1 Nov 2002 (Forum)
When cornering and travelling at low speed across rough ground, I can hear a creaking/banging type sound coming from the O/S front wheel area. The general opinion was that the arb droplinks needed replacing. Well I replaced them, and guess what, the noise is still there. Does anybody have any ideas? I have pinned it down to about 3 components. -
Volvo S60 T5 SE v 2.4T SE 1 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Browsing the web however, most motoring Journos appear to prefer the 2.4T, saying that it's 200 bhp is more useable than the T5's 250 bhp in everyday driving, with less turbo lag and a better torque curve. I well know however the difference between briefly road testing a car that is not yours, and living with one that is for years, and therefore wonder what the real world difference between these two otherwise identically suspended and powertrained (with the options I would chose) vehicles, is. -
LED Lighting eg Range Rover 5 Oct 2002 (Forum)
So wondered when this technology was going to filter down onto normal cars and get rid of the high frequency we all see of cars diving round with light(s) out. Seen quite a few of the new Range Rover, but yesterday was the first time I'd followed one. LED rear lights I noticed, great. One thing I didn't like though was that the amber indicator LED's appeared to be in a single layer ring around the brake lights. -
Old shape BMW 7 series 22 Jun 2002 (Forum)
I'm seriously considering getting a second hand 7 series on an S or T plate. I cover about 25k a year, including a couple of trips to Austria/Switzerland, and the idea of a car like this for under £15,000 appeals to me. Am I being a complete fool? If so, you'd better talk me out of it. -
MOT failure points? Newbie query. 11 Jun 2002 (Forum)
Is there somewhere on the net that has photos of what would fail and what would pass? I have just bought a car which was MOT\'d on Saturday and I have noticed that the rear driver\'s side disk has quote corroded, worse than the rear disk on the other side, and the outer edge has chunks missing out of it but not within the area swept by the pads. I queried the condition of the discs when I first saw the car and said I thought they should be changed but the dealer gave the usual \'everything will be sorted that needs it for the mot\' sort of answer rather than a definite yes or no so I don\'t know whether I have much recourse. -
VW parts near Yeovil (Calling Guy Lacey?) 13 Apr 2002 (Forum)
(It's great really - just a little more complex than my clockwork Polo) Anyway, the front exhaust silencer blows like a low flying Lancaster and I'm very reluctant to get one of the fast fit places to put another tissue paper box on with a 13 month rust through guarantee. Does anywhere near Yeovil sell Ernst (or similar good quality) exhausts? I know G&S in Bristol do, but it's a bit far away. Or are there any decent exhaust suppliers around here? I'm not afraid to crawl underneath and fit it myself, so long as I don't ever have to do that section again. -
Driven Tonight 31 Mar 2002 (Forum)
In the absence of the regulation thread on Driven I?ll start one. The comparison between the S class Merc and 7 series BMW IMHO set new a new low even by the standards of this programme. For those who didn?t watch, it consisted of Jason switching off the electronic traction devices. He then drove each car like Steve McQueen on steroids through aircraft hangars, a covered passageway and out onto the airfield in the usual opposite locking , tyre smoking manner that prospective purchasers of this type of limousine will obviously demand. -
ABS Awareness! 23 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Overheard by my work colleague's wife in school recently shortly after our first winter snows in Aberdeenshire. Three teachers (ladies) talking about ABS; they were aware that their car(s) were fitted with ABS, but one individual, describing what happened when she braked in the prevailing conditions, 'the pedal started banging and thumping so I took my foot off it straight away!' How many drivers (off both sexes) are not aware of how ABS manifests itself? -

Mondeo woes again 9 Oct 2001 (Forum)
At the time Kwick Fit (they were the only ones able to get one next day, the day we went on holiday) said its the main cat thats gone and that was what they fitted and all ok, but you have two more, one for each bank of cylinders (2.5V6). It would appear that one of these has now gone. I understand that the newer V6's have only one. Is it possible to fit some spool pieces in way of the smaller cats and remove them totally from the system but still have a car that will pass emissions on MOT? If I have to replace the cat I might as well have both done, how much will this cost me?? -
Price guides 21 Aug 2001 (Forum)
How accurate are price guides such as Parkers or What Car? According to the current issues a Fiat Ulysse 1.9 TD S 97 on a P plate from a dealers in good nick and mileage would go for about 6.8k to just over 7k depending on which guide you look at. A local dealer to me has one on at 8.5k - no air cond or sunroof - no other extras - the only selling point is it's only done 25k miles rather than 45k which you'd expect for the age. -
What Car? 19 Jun 2001 (Forum)
ve just returned from a meeting with a personal tax client who was wrestling with an interesting car choice dilemma. He?s resigned a senior management post that came with a company XJ8, to work on a self employed basis helping set up a new venture in financial services, so he needs to buy some suitable transport - these are the criteria: He is prepared to spend up to £10 - £12K, but would be happy to spend a lot less! -
Ford Focus brakes 16 Mar 2001 (Forum)
The noise can also be heard sometimes when getting into the car . The two local Ford dealers say there is nothing wrong and that lots of cars do it. My son' s doesn't nor does my sister- in -law's or the man to whom I sold my Sierra. Neither have any of the Fords I have owned over the past 35 years. I wrote to Mr McAllister the MD of Ford but of course have just been referred through the usual Customer relations circuit again.
