Technological `facilitators`and continental travel 7 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Some memories of navigating in and out of Barcelona by observing the position of the Sun. Then across France, Belgium and Germany on a bike, with a roadmap held against my back and a hand coming out from behind to point out the route. A lot of chance too. Finding that camp site or hotel by good luck at the end of an exhausting day. -
UK car market and tax changes 10 Aug 2007 (Forum)
(as someone else has remarked here about non-snobbish car attitudes in France). I wonder whether if the tax system moves ever more to penalise CO2 that cars like the Sirion or very tweaked economy models of mid sized cars might become the norm and a big engined small or medium car might be a thing of the past. -
Nissan Terrano Clutch Slipping 22 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Hi folks, Has anyone any suggestions for clutch slip on a Terrano II 2.7TDi. Car was bought online form UK company (found out it was built in France for sale in Cyprus). It's a 53 plate with 24K miles. Symptom is clutch slips (4th / 5th gear after around 2000 - 2200RPM with foot to the floor). Doesn't do it from cold (takes 1/2 an hour driving or more to show), no better/worse towing or 4WD. -
Benefits of Optimax... 28 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Anyway, fill up to the brim and off I went to the ferry. Arrive at my desitination about 400miles into France, (all motorway miles) tank in pratically empty - what a good job I used the Optimax I thought! Anyway, came home yesterday, filled up at the local Geant Casino (supermarket) and put in some of the Unleaded 98 fuel at about .98Euro/l. -
Une carte postale 1 Jun 2004 (Forum)
There is never any traffic, so despite the handicap of right-hand drive, drop a gear and you're past the tractor. Even if it is a 147. More vehicles overtaken in a week in France than in a year on British roads. What of the vehicles that are overtaken? It is very heartening to see Bangernomics taken to extremes in France. Renault 4, monseiur? Pas de probleme. I 'ave zees verrry nice Renault 4; une veritable museum vehicle; rust libre; dodgy respray, mais beaucoup de years old, and still running. -
SUVs Public enemy No 1? 31 Jul 2023 (Forum)
France has had the guts to crack down on SUV drivers. Why doesn’t Britain? (msn.com) A very good article from the sheer size of some of these to the extra resources used to build them and the extra weight and emissions they generate. -
n/a - Border crossings within the EU 30 Aug 2022 (Forum)
In these post-Brexit times, are there any restrictions/queues for UK cars criss-crossing borders between EU countries, unlike the unhindered pre-Brexit times? I'm shortly doing a driving holiday which will involve France as my point of entry to the EU (where I would expect a degree of queueing/interrogation/etc... now that we're non-EU), and I'd then like to visit Belgium, Luxembourg and possibly Germany - can I expect similar border hold-up's at each subsequent exit/entry? -
Old cars! - Do you know any alternatives to copper grease? 6 Jul 2015 (Forum)
Hi, I'm currently in the middle of nowhere in France, and I had to change my brake pads. The calipers are about 17 years old, and therefore pretty corroded. The new pads are binding, so normally I'd put a bit of Copaslip on the lugs to keep them moving, but this being The Sticks, I can't find any anywhere! -
Honda AccordCRV (2014) - Headlight adjustment 30 Mar 2015 (Forum)
The handbook says beam deflectors are not necessary for continental driving. I frequently drive in France and am often "flashed" by drivers of on-coming vehicles when they encounter my dipped headlight. I advised th main dealer of this and asked them to check the alignment. They said they are set correctly. -
Citroen C4 1.6 HDi92 (2008) - How do I get a certificate of conformity? 17 Sep 2014 (Forum)
I bought a Citroen C4 1.6 HDi92 in France in 2008 (new). I now live in England and it seems I need a certificate of conformity to register my car in the UK. The car has been inspected by VOSA and so I now have an IAC Certificate but it doesn't give the CO2 emissions which are needed to get road tax. -

Insurance for exporting car 2 Dec 2011 (Forum)
Hi, Thing is, I'm confused, I want to export a vehicle (haven't bought it yet) and register it in another country (drive it there trough france) so buying a full years insurance is pointless. But I've read the terms and conditions for the short term insurance companies and the ones that do apply cover in Europe only do so if the start and end of the journey is in the UK. -
Mercedes Benz S-Class W220 (1999 - 2005) - 01 320 Light adjustment for French registration 29 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I now live in France and need to re-register my RHD S class and have it comply to French specification. There is no information to show that the existing lights can be adjusted so I have been quoted £540 for new lights or £106 for new lenses but MB Technical Department, UK, will not commit that just changing the lenses would be sufficient.
