  • Not fussy - Sub £2.5k Car for 12 months 19 Jun 2022 (Forum)
I'm countryside/market town based so there is little to no city driving and mostly its the school run (8 miles on country roads), 2 mile trips to the shop every couple of days and the occasional (a couple of times a month) drive of 30+ miles on the motorway. There seems to be loads of 'best car for under £x' web pages and not many overlap with what they recommend so hopefully someone can help with what I should look for.
  • Mini Cooper - Blue Smoke from exhaust 10 Mar 2022 (Forum)
Ive spoken to a friend (car salesman) who has said it may be difficult taking it back (only bought last week) as the car is running smoothly and isnt 'faulty'.  Its a 13 year old car so we should expect some smoke etc, but with it being blue its obvious what the fault is.   For £3k, the car is immaculate and finding something similar is difficult.
  • Vauxhall Insignia - Best way to dry car seats!? 13 Jan 2021 (Forum)
With lockdown, and a lack of time available for me to do it, I really can't take it on a 2-3 hour drive with all the heaters on. I also can't really leave it outside the house running - my house is set back from the main road, probably approx. 100 yards, it's at an angle too (i.e the car is to the far left of the house, not directly in front). Wondered if there were any other tips of advice on how I can dry the car?
  • Ford Galaxy mk2 - Over Voltage problem 28 Nov 2020 (Forum)
Recently the car has had a new clutch, new fuel injectors, new fan control module, and had the coolant system replaced on a Ford recall. I love the car it’s got low mileage but I can’t keep shelling out to keep it running. Does anyone have any idea ?
  • Vauxhall Astra elite - Valuation of my written off car in December 2019 28 Nov 2020 (Forum)
Hi. I’m really hoping someone can help me on here. My parked car was written off by a hit and run driver in December 2019 and the fault vehicles insurance company have only just decided to pay me for my car. My car wasn’t insured at the time because I was about to travel and wasn’t driving it.
  • Nissan Note 1.4 petrol 2009 - oil change? 9 Oct 2020 (Forum)
Our mileage is likely to be greater this year but not by a great amount, possibly 5,000 miles.  To keep it reasonably exercised I take it on 100 mile runs including mostly fast dual carriageways every two months  but the rest of its trips are 10 miles or so a couple of times a week at most. It is barely worth keeping the old wheels but it has its uses.
  • Hyundai i30 vs Astra - Looking for a late reg car. 10 Jun 2020 (Forum)
Looking to change it though for a 2018 or 2019 car. for around about 11k pounds. It is for mainly town driving and local runs. One to two adults plus occasionally 2 small dogs. Does a fortnightly 100 mile motorway trip to see relatives. We would likely keep it until it's dead - so probably for 10 years.  Have been looking at the 1.0 litre petrol on both the i30 and the Astra.
  • n/a - No more smart motorways - official. 16 Mar 2020 (Forum)
Chief Executive Jim O’Sullivan told the Commons' Transport Select Committee that "dynamic" smart motorways, where the hard shoulder is used as a live lane during peak times, are "too complicated for people to use" and that the system would not be rolled out further" No Jimbo - they are not "dynamic" - they are just b***** dangerous, it's also possible that you are confusing motorists being "confused" with being "terrified" if they suffer a breakdown and have to stop in the left hand running lane that used to be called a hard shoulder. And as for admitting not having investigated the dangers of removing the hard shoulder - that statement could leave Highways England open to some brisk court action from relatives of people who have been killed on these death trap motorways.
  • any - EV battery charging method 16 Mar 2020 (Forum)
It will be tempting when you go shopping or park somewhere even at home to 'top up' your batteries, but will doing so shorten the lifespan...ie do batteries have a finite number of recharges or time or use or what exactly governs the expected life? Will they require running almost flat every so many charges and then a long trickle charge or could you rapid charge them from only half charged permanently to no detriment. I'm not aware this is being spoken about, and it reminds me of the ludicrous situation with the barely fit for purpose regen of car DPF's, where you can end driving nowhere just to let the thing regen if and when it decides it, not you the driver, deem the journey suitable and if the driver happens to have spotted the clues.
  • In general - Diesels 12 Feb 2020 (Forum)
The one thing I'd like to ask is I have just read an article on the rac website about dpf and it mentions how long they should last and cost to fix and the way I see it a dpf 100k miles, replace at a cost of 1k on some cars 100k mile means a new cam belt and around that mileage ish a new clutch all on the ish ,but if all this comes in or around the ish you could end up with a lot of expensive repairs , so to my mind a diesel with around 100k on average 10 years old could end up costing alot to keep running beyond the 100k mark. I feel that I must be getting this wrong. Any advice would be great.
  • Ford Focus - Looking to buy a Ford Focus 28 Dec 2019 (Forum)
Basically, I want to hear anyone’s opinions on these cars good or bad and the same on the engine. It will only be used as a run about in town so max 5-10 miles a day. Many thanks
  • VW Polo 54 1.4L Petrol - Polo 1.4L Petrol 54 Shaking when Idle 21 Nov 2019 (Forum)
My mechanic has had it in on numerous occassions to try and get to the route of the problem but still the problem exists . What I have started to realise is that when the weather is cold the car runs 90% ok I only sence the mildest flutter, but as the warmers weather comes in the car starts to shake when idle, the warmer it is outside the worse the car is. Strange!  What can this be. My son thinks its a sticky cylinder.
  • MINI Cooper - Mini Cooper - blue smoke, engine burning oil. 8 Nov 2019 (Forum)
I am always wary of my cars being repaired at places that I do not know.  Is this a type of repair that someone can bodge up to make it run ok for a few weeks? If I get the car back and I don't see blue smoke and the engine oil isn't dropping, is it safe to assume that the car is fixed? Or will this just be a problem car from now on?    Thanks
  • Audi A4 Cabriolet - Strange smell through car vents 31 Oct 2019 (Forum)
I have spent a small fortune recently fixing an oil leak, changing rocker cover gasket, new front exhaust pipe , new timing belt and water pump (not to mention a new clutch) This problem of an interior smell through the vents has been there all along with none of the above work making any difference This morning the EML light came on and the code showing is PO171 engine running lean. My mechanic now wants to remove hoses and inspect and clean in case there is a leak somewhere ? Many thanks
  • Mazda 2 2011 - Battery light on, battery & alternator working 9 Oct 2019 (Forum)
I then took the Car to an auto electrician who advised that there was electrically nothing wrong with the car and it was likely a computer issue. He said I could take the car to a Mazda dealer to get diagnostics run but that this would likely be expensive so he didn't recommend it. I'd tend to agree with him but I thought it would be best to get a second opinion before resigning myself to having a little red light on my dash haunting me.
  • Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI - Blanking EGR valve and fault codes 24 Aug 2019 (Forum)
They are P0487 - Exhaust gas recirculation throttle position control circuit, P0488 - EGR throttle position sensor circuit out of range and P2142 - Exhaust gas recirculation throttle control circuit "A" high. The car is running fine, actually better than it did, and not going into limp mode. Can anyone tell me if these codes are linked to the blanking of the EGR valve, or something else, and whether they will eventually stop, and if not, what I can do to stop the fault codes coming up again?
  • Seat Leon FR - Offside Door/Sill repair 12 Aug 2019 (Forum)
The second garage said if it was on insurance they'd have to replace the door, and I'm minded to go for the full door replacement as first garage (while self-interested) said to get anywhere near the right finish both things would have to be replaced. Just wanted to run it past a forum I trust to see if this was reasonable. Thanks all (hopefully the link below works) https://i.imgur.com/pbvYBZX.jpg
  • Honda Civic ES 1.8 - Honda P2040 code 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
They reset so the symbol disappeared and mentioned I might need a new catalytic converter if the problem persisted.. The car is 6 years old and 90000 on clock. I run it well nearly every day. This morning I tried to accelerate and the car lost a little power and the check engine symbol started to blink. A few hours later when I drove the car, the symbol stopped blinking and the car had regained full power.
  • Ford Focus MK2 - Battery / starting issues 14 Jun 2019 (Forum)
Since then without going for a decent drive (20 miles either way) I can only use it 3/4 times before it won't start. I have had Green Flag out to check the battery and have said it runs fine (around 14.6V) so apparently that isn't the issue. At the same time they advised that the alternater is fine. I have spoken with someone who has a decent knowledge and advised to get my battery rechecked as it can still show a good output when all the cells might not be working properly.
  • Hyundai Tucson 2015 - Aircon Recharge 6 Jun 2019 (Forum)
