Renault 5(1.4)-intermittent problem 2 May 2001 (Forum)
When the car returns to idle the car nearly stalls, then the revs pickup automatically and everything is fine. This only occurs when the engine has been run for a few miles. The car has covered 35,000 miles and is fully serviced. Can anybody offer any suggestions as to what may be causing this problem ? Thanks Richard Naylor -
7 seats but dont like MPVs 1 Apr 2001 (Forum)
I'm looking for a car with 7 seats for family running around and the occaisional longer trip, but dont like big MPVs as they seem a bit van like. I've got about £8-12k to spend and it has to be an automatic. My thoughts to date: Vauxhall Zafira, Peugeot 406 estate, maybe an old Mercedes E-class estate. -
Motorway fuel economy 27 Mar 2001 (Forum)
The 1.6L car is much more economical in "general driving" but about 5 mpg worse (35mpg against 40 mpg) on a steady 70-75 mph long run on the motorway. Am I going to have to stick to 55mph on the motorway, or is there something wrong with my new car? (Published figures Urban cold 28.5 mpg, Extra-urban 49.5 mpg, Combined 39.2 mpg) -

Jaguar S-Type (1999 - 2007) - Long term running report on an 04 diesel auto. 1 Aug 2008 (Forum)
ve had it has always hovered around the 35MPG mark, although if you fill it when hot & do a reasonable run up say the A1M then you?ll see 43MPG or so on the trip. It?s been run 95% on Shell V Power although it makes zero difference to the consumption it does make it run a little smoother & since I also get fuel vouchers every 2-3 months it? -
Why do you run so many cars? 5 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Fitting all of us in it is not that much of an issue, though it is handy. Give her something the size of the Discovery and she will run a mile - one mile further than she would drive it! Then there's me - work - needs to fit and store all my stuff in so that I effectively have a mobile tool shed, plus space for materials etc I need to collect and carry. -
Hyundai Tucson - Start/Stop MHEV 12V battery recommendation 11 May 2025 (Forum)
It looks like mine is nearing its end of life and start/stop not often engages. My previous fiesta was running just fine with the cheapest battery, but some advice on future battery would be very much appreciated, given that it's start/stop system + 48V MHEV vehicle. Thank you. -

Any - EV’s and vegetable oil. 2 Jul 2023 (Forum)
But instead of potentially waiting months for a suitable electrical feed to the site, drivers will charge from second life EV batteries that are, in turn, charged by generators running on vegetable oil. The generation process is 90% lower carbon emitting than diesel and the requisite number of trees will be planted to hit net zero. It’s a temporary solution until the chargers are permanently hooked up to the mains. -
MG4 - Driving school EV 11 Jun 2023 (Forum)
The majority of new cars are now automatic and many young drivers will never drive a manual and may even be looking at an EV as their first car. Also cheap running costs for the school as driving school cars don't do huge daily mileages and a lot of it is in towns so ideal EV territory. -
Vw golf gte - Hybrid car 7 Feb 2023 (Forum)
I’m looking for a car that’s a self charging and plug in hybrid along the lines of a golf gte, where it can either be plugged in or charge when driving. During the week it would be used for short journeys so hopefully would run on battery, then at the weekends longer motorway journeys. Other than the golf what other makes and models could I look at with similar capabilities, obviously not all would have the golf gte performance and my budget is around £18000 -
Any - Dashcams 5 Jan 2023 (Forum)
So, following on from being driven into yesterday, sitting waiting at a give way this morning a pedestrian runs along the pavement to my left and straight into the busy major road trying to catch a bus. Apart from seemingly setting an altitude record off the top of the windscreen of the car that hit her, she’s a bit battered and bruised but largely unscathed. -
to be decided - electric cars for the elderly 5 Oct 2022 (Forum)
I am in my 80’s and run an ageing Honda Jazz iShift. Goes very well, but is now 14 years old. My wife drives the car mainly to visit nearby friends all within five mike radius. I use it for getting to a couple of social clubs I belong to. -
Any - First ever NIP 24 Sep 2022 (Forum)
Got my first ever NIP in the post today after 18 years of driving, bit miffed but have to good my hands up. Was doing 50 in a 40 on a duel carriage way I was in a rush as running late but still my fault none the less, I've filled it all in going to send it off first thing Monday. Whats the chance of getting a speed awareness course over the points and a fine as I'm usually very careful as my license is my job. -
Vauxhall Corsa - Cracking in between the treads (long ways) - is it 2 Aug 2022 (Forum)
Hi My wife recently inherited a Corsa and I noticed some cracking on the tyres this morning. It's in the long in between threads section. It runs around the whole tyre and is the same as in the photo for two of them. A third has it but not so bad. And the fourth is ok. Do they need replacing asap? Are they dangerous? -
Best reliable economical used car for £6-7k 15 Mar 2022 (Forum)
Hi all, looking for some advice on the best used car for a relative. Needs to be reliable, economical to run but still decent to drive and not too much of an ‘older person car’! Budget is £6-7k but that doesn’t seem to get you much at the moment. Car will be mostly used for shortish journeys around town and some short motorway trips. -
The cat that gets the cream - Ora Cat BEV 2 Nov 2021 (Forum)
Interior fabulous, with lots of kit, and makes the MG ZS very, very dull. If this is as good as it looks, they'll hit the ground running. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BvevMKcXmc -
Land Rover Range Rover P38 (1994 - 2002) - 1999 2.5TD lumpy tickover 8 May 2021 (Forum)
My Local independent ,has not managed to isolate this problem. The BMW diesel looses its tickover when hot, i.e. on a fairly long run ,you might stop for traffic lights and the engine looses its smooth tickover when your foot comes off the accelerator ,it needs a blip on the throttle to recover the rhythm, itdoesnt always happen , any thoughts welcome. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 51 reg 2.0 petrol - value & fuel consumption. 2 Feb 2021 (Forum)
Glad to see the website and forum is still doing well in its new restful blueish look! Anyone run a Mondeo Estate 2.0 petrol to know their real life fuel consumption? Also I wonder what a trade sale (not p/x) value would be for a clean 51 plate Ghia with 86K and history up to 70K? Thanks, David -
Nissan Note 2006 - Oil sump corroded and porous 20 Dec 2020 (Forum)
I've not seen any evidence of oil leaking onto the ground and for the record, I'm not intending to keep the car for much longer but still need to keep it running and would like to get a couple of quid for it when the time comes. Cheers
