  • Renault Captur 2016 - Driver Window Issues 24 Nov 2023 (Forum)
Dealer is playing funny about having it back as "they don't know what is causing it" and Renault UK say that it needs to go to run further diagnostics. Has anyone seen or heard of this problem?
  • Any - How long does an exhaust pipe last? 7 Oct 2023 (Forum)
Have had both petrol and diesel cars (pre DPF, with a nice lining of soot in the exhaust and with DPFs) and in perhaps 350,000 miles over that 30 odd years, aside from one exhaust for the Figaro, I’ve never replaced any exhaust components, even on cars that I’ve run for longer than 10 years. Are exhausts just made from more durable metal now, or do more stringent emissions regulations and the phasing out of leaded petrol mean that the gases passing through the exhaust are less corrosive?
  • Infiniti Q30 but Mercedes parts - Front vibration cause - Diagnostic help 14 Sep 2023 (Forum)
Have done wheel bearing, new tire, new brake, wheel alignment and wheel balancing but couldn't resolve the issue. Engine and gearbox are running smoothly. No strange noise can be heard but suspect inner CV joint, control arm or bushing. What could be the possible cause? Any thoughts? Many thanks, Joe
  • Audi A4/BMW 3 - Seeking for a new long-term car 7 Aug 2023 (Forum)
It seems to me like the best options on the market are: 1. Audi A4 2.0TDI (2014-2016). 2. BMW 3 2.0d (2014-2016). I'm amazed by the low running costs and road tax for these cars. Along with decent reliability on WhatCar? Can you please advice me if I'm correct with my assertions, or perhaps there are other models you would recommend?
  • Honda Civic - Honda civic 2012-2017 Engine choice. 25 May 2023 (Forum)
Has anyone here driven the 1.4 for comparison?  I would consider the 1.6D as I do long runs at least once a week but I've not heard much about reliability. Going by some very high milers on the used market I assume it's very good. Thanks for reading.
  • 2000 Mazda B2500 - New alternator but battery still not charging 9 Apr 2023 (Forum)
Got in it the other morning battery was too flat to turn the engine to start it. Charged the battery up and got it running but the battery light was on all the time. Put a meter on the battery with engine runnning and it stayed at about 11.9 volts even when I revved it up hard. Alternator gone, yes? Fitted a new alternator, started her up, battery light no longer on, happy days!

  • Any SI - Damaged Spark plug hole thread 2 Apr 2023 (Forum)
    (a) Fancy expanding "bottom up" thread chaser (b) conventional solid "top down" thread chaser (c) Put some axial hacksaw cuts in a spark plug and run that down. (a) Seems theoretically superior but I probably wont be able to find it in Taiwan and don't really want to wait for shipping. https://www.amazon.com/Sealey-MS003-Reverse-Action-Thread/dp/B0086306NO https://www.amazon.com/Powerbuilt-640811-Back-Tap-Thread-Repair/dp/B0014FGVVW Anyone used one?
  • New car advice - downsizing 6 Feb 2023 (Forum)
Here's the brief:  Looking to downsize from the current Audi A4, to something 2 sizes down, i.e. Clio, 208 etc. Doing a lot less miles these days, no need for the bi-annual run down to the South of France, and public transport where we live is both cheap and good quality. Has to be automatic, hybrid not necessary, but would consider one. Needs to be a bit pokey - recognising that this is somewhat open to interpretation, but for arguments sake, let's say sub 9 secs on the 0-60 dash.
  • Peugeot 207 - braking system faulty 4 Dec 2022 (Forum)
Can anyone shed any light on what this problem might be and what I should do next?  Beginning to think that buying a newer car in order to save money on running cost was not such a good idea and I should have stuck to my trusty T reg Fiesta :(  Thanks in advance
  • Volkswagen T-Roc - T-Roc R-Line, Keep Golf GT, or something different 2 Oct 2022 (Forum)
I have been saving so it is doable though I had planned to go for a high reliability hybrid such as a RAV4 for my next car. I currently have a Golf GT Edition. It runs great and other than an expensive clutch change 1 month after purchase, it's never skipped a beat.  I expect to get £9-10K + for the Golf.  My work commute is 12 miles each way.
  • Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 ecoFLEX 12V S Euro 5 - Intermittent starting issues 15 Sep 2022 (Forum)
Fast forward a few weeks & now at intermittent periods it wont start it will either a) attempt to start, makes the trying to start noise then the engine kicks in OR b) Tries to start and fails then in starting again it starts 2nd time no problem This happens at intermittent periods for example I may be at work for 8 hours comes out and either a) or b) happens In checking it on a ramp leaving it running etc there is nothing visible as the issue Any advice, experience or fixes would me much appreciated.
  • 1986 Daihatsu Skywing - Progressive wiring loom failure? 14 Sep 2022 (Forum)
Bulbs and bulb holder contacts seem OK. Maybe just age/heat/ozone/humidity causing perished insulation and corrosion. I could run some more bypasses, but I should probably open up the wiring loom. Groan! If I un-tape it, which I don't fancy much, I'm thinking I should put it into that corrugated conduit stuff (if I can find it here) or some split tubing, to maybe make tracing easier in the future, if there is a future.
  • Tiny turbo pops! 8 Sep 2022 (Forum)
Had they opted for a basic old school 1.4 Corsa instead of the revvy wee 1.0 3cyl turbo it would more than likely still be running for many years to come despite the neglect.
  • Seat Toledo - Buying a car 26 Aug 2022 (Forum)
Alloy wheels have been replaced with steels and plastic wheel trims, as expected, seats in poor condition... high mileage, 82,000 miles in 3 years, then 41 in 14 months, together with 3 mot tests after the 1st which passed ok.. But, it was very cheap for a 2018/18 car. My advice, Don't walk away, Run fast as you can. I can't put the location as per good/bad rules.
  • Mitsubishi Colt 1.5 D - Automatic Gearbox Fault reving up for it to engage 2 Aug 2022 (Forum)
If he leaves the car for just a few days, when he gets in it, he selects the gear he wants, Auto, reverse etc, but he has to rev the car up to about 2000 revs before the actual gearbox bits which at this point the car shoots forward or reverse. Obviosuly, this could cause a problem if he was parked between to cars. Once the car has run for a bit, the gearbox is fine and no issues. I am quite concerned as he is 70 years old so his reaction is not as got as it used to be. The car is booked into the garage next week from where he got it, but I woud like to know if anyone had any suggestions as to what it might be so that he does not get ripped off at the garage.
  • Used Car Selection - Input Welcome 15 Nov 2021 (Forum)
After running an old Ford for two decades have finally agreed with the family to purchase a much newer vehicle. Going from a late 90's Ford to a fairly modern car will be a welcome change. Currently looking at approved used Lexus GS\IS models that are within the current budget which is ideally no more than £26k.
  • Old cars' - MoT history 5 May 2021 (Forum)
One thing I have noticed - occasionally I get 'there is a problem - check the reg no you entered is correct'.  I do wonder how many cars there are running around with plausible looking but false plates?
  • Kia 9 months on - And what a year it has been! 20 Dec 2020 (Forum)
Stress free motoring, if not quite as light on fuel as the Zs. locally seemps to be 30-33 mpg which is entirely local short runs. So quite happy to have a large portion of humble pie to eat. I think that it (the Zs) has finally sold, showing as "delivered"! I would also like to thank everyone fot their kind support at the time I had "The Bug" and have made a 99.99% recovery.
  • Mazda 3 1.6 petrol 2012 - Whirring noise from alternator 28 Sep 2020 (Forum)
Checking a second time there was also a second noise that sounded more “electronic” also from the alternator. Again this prior to the engine starting. There a lot of stuff online about noisy running alternators but  nothing very clear about noises before start. I will book it into the garage next week but it may be a few days before they can look at it as I know they have a lot on. We will try to avoid using it meantime but am I worrying unnecessarily, do all ageing alternators make noises and it’s just that I have never noticed before?
