How important is the image of a company vehicle? 30 Nov 2021 (Forum)
Parked just along the road from my house was a quite young but very, very dirty van. This van also had an enormous dent which stretched along the N/S from the passenger door, right along the sliding door to the rear wheel arch. Now you are probably thinking, well what is noteworthy about this?. I won't say the company name, but the lettering revealed the company to be, "Purveyors of superior automobiles for the discerning motorist". -
Genesis 25 Aug 2021 (Forum)
Apologies for the rum induced nostalgia moment, but what was the car which instigated your lifelong interest in cars? For me, after a childhood of dozing in the back of a series of Volvo 340’s my dad suddenly went a bit mad and turned up one night in a 1985 C plate (2 years old at the time) Saab 900 16v Turbo 4dr in metallic burgundy with tan interior and all of 175bhp which was a huge number for 1988. -
Ford Transit Custom - Bought via auction without V5 unable to Tax & MOT 7 Jun 2021 (Forum)
Bought via auction without V5 as a CAT S write off. I have insured the van however have just realised that I cannot Tax and MOT it as I do not have the V5 or the previous sellers details. So my questions are - 1 - do I need to wait 6 weeks (or longer during covid) for the V62 postal application to DVLA for a log book to run it course or is there a more efficient way for this to happen. -
Decisions decisions - what motorbike? 24 May 2021 (Forum)
I know four-strokes are generally more reliable but are they less fun? I have also noticed that VFR400's are quite pricey (even G and H reg ones) and for the same money I could buy a 600. Any suggestions? Mike -
Is this car clocked? 18 May 2021 (Forum)
However, when I checked MOT history, things don't add up: 2018 - mileage 14,000 2019 - mileage 18,000 2020 mileage 22,0000 - Pass Advisories: Front Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (5.2.3 (e)) Front Brake pad(s) wearing thin (1.1.13 (a) (ii)) 2021 - mileage - 28,000 It has two previous owners. How can a car with factory fitted brake pads need replacing at 22,000 miles? On the RAC website. -
Buying advice please - used, large family 8k 6 Mar 2021 (Forum)
Preferably petrol as making lots of short trips. Mileage up to 60k. Usual prerequisites, frugal, reliable, and safe as will have 2 under 10's in the back. Ideally have a large boot and roomy in the back so have been looking at estates. You seem to be able to get 3/4 year old Astra Sports Tourer and Peugeot 308sw at this price but I'm worried about the reliability of these brands, I don't how well they are received nowadays? -
First EV servive station 13 Dec 2020 (Forum)
Presumably they are selling electric to the grid and then buying back electric for its service station(s). I expect the company and its customers are laughing at the moment with the price of electric with no fuel duty or VAT How long can this be sustainable and what disadvantages to the tax payer and ICE motorists. -
Suzuki Vitara - Does a ‘15 Vitara roll more than an ‘03 Fabia? 19 Sep 2020 (Forum)
The Vitara seems like great value and I was pretty sold on it after watching the Carwow review on YouTube. Then I realised that he’s driving the S version with stiffer suspension which is probably out of my budget. I’m also interested in the Ignis but with no steering reach adjust I doubt I’d be as comfortable as in the Vitara. The Kadjar and Peugeot 2008 might be other options. -

Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 31-08-2019 21 Sep 2019 (Forum)
Which Car "expert" answered a query form someone about an HRV - he dismissed the HRV as under powered. This was probably based on their "expert review" of the 2015 1,5's. He recommended a CRV!! - the query was from a driver of a 12 year old Jazz - even the slow HRV would be OK for a driver of an asthmatic Jazz. Obviously they had not done their homework on the 1.5 Sport than can do 0-60 in roughly 8 seconds. -
Unknown Part Name 13 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Hi, I know nothing about cars but the other day had to put in a new battery into my S Type Jaguar after googling how to do it. However there was a tube connected to a plastic part that went into the old battery that I now know was needed to release gasses. I still have the tube but the plastic part that was in the battery that the tube connected to I no longer have because I disposed of the old battery.. -
Nissan X-Trail - x-Trail models 22 Mar 2019 (Forum)
I have been looking for an ideal 4x4, by that I mean it has to have the right seat height for a disabled person to get in & out. These have proven to be the ideal height after comparing other 4x4's, but there is a problem and thats which model and how do you work out the difference between them all to narrow down your searches. I am not looking at the new style and much prefer an 8-10 year old automatic diesel that has been looked after and wont need lots of work to keep going. -
Honda Jazz 1.4 CVT - acceleration noise 12 Feb 2019 (Forum)
Maybe a bit like the sound of hot water going through a radiator at home, a sort of tinkling shhing sound. It does not make this sound in N, only D and I can't hear it in S, possibly as the engine is noisier? This is with all aircon / fans etc off, and it doesn't go away once the engine warms up. It sounds as though it's coming from towards the left of the engine bay. -
Mazda 3 - Poor (dangerous?) dealer advice 27 Nov 2018 (Forum)
When servicing and Mot'ing his Mazda 3 in September the main dealer reported a crack in the clutch cylinder. They tooped up the reservoir and said it would be OK for s few months. There were no Mot advisories. Last night the dash brake light came on and the reservoir needed topped up. The fault cleared. The thing is the Mazda only has one reservoir shared by brake and clutch systems. -
1986 Daihatsu Skywing (flat tappet OHC) - CG-4 Oil OK in an old Petrol Engine? 3 Jul 2018 (Forum)
I've acquired about 15 litres of CPC 15W40 China Petroleum Corporation (Taiwan's state-owned, I think, oil company) Superfleet CG-4 oil. Seems a pity to waste it, but the drum doesn't appear to carry any corresponding API "S" classification. What, if any, are the likely issues in using a diesel-only oil in a petrol engine? For about the past 5-years I've been using a 50-50 mix of CPC SAE 40 and Mobil Delvac MX 15W40, both of which are primarily diesel oils but also show SJ. -
Premium estate advice 5 Jan 2018 (Forum)
I currently have a 63 plate 320d m sport which I love and have narrowed down to the following. Merc c class 220 and sport estate Audi (facelift) A6 tdi s line/black edition estate BMW 520d m sport estate Concerns are Audi and BMW are a bit dated inside and the Audi is due for replacement next year. Merc is very nice but maybe a tad small? Don’t need to go through all requirements, budget is circa £20000 Any views or other suggestions of similar cars welcome
