Airmatic Dual Control 31 Jul 2002 (Forum)
Does anyone drive or have been driven in a mercedes fitted with Airmatic Dual control suspension? I have decided on a New E-Class Merc and want the sports suspension but I am a little worried that it may be too harsh. -
Renualt Clio 1.5 dCi 80 6 Jul 2002 (Forum)
Is the mpg quoted realistic, does the new 80 bhp engine do the business? Finally, how do you differentiate between the 60bhp and 80bhp models without driving them? Thanks, -

VW 12 spline driveshaft bolts size 13 May 2002 (Forum)
Would anyone know the size of the 12 point spline drive for the driveshaft to g'box flange bolts on a Mk2 Golf? Hopefully this will save me guessing, followed by crawling under the car in a car park, getting it wrong and feeling like a bit of a plonker as I ask to exchange a brand new tool I've just covered in grease and detritus! -
Golf 1.4E develops quirks 3 May 2002 (Forum)
Went to fill it up tonight and pressed the button beside the handbrake to open fuel filler cap and nothing happens. I can't get it open! Then driving home at a steady 56 in order to conserve fuel I noticed the gauges dip (rev counter and speedo) momentarily. (I had not changed gear or speed). It's going to get looked at at the garage tomorrow. -
Coolant leak onto alternator 26 Apr 2002 (Forum)
I got caught in a traffic jam on the A19 this morning. After an hour or so of stop start driving I noticed steam coming from under the bonnet. Pulled over and discovered one of my hoses has a pin hole leak. The leak was spraying onto the engine causing the steam. The coolant was also spraying over the alternator. -
Leaky Radiator 18 Apr 2002 (Forum)
After driving on the motorway last weekend, I have noticed a small blue bead of coolant on the centre of my radiator. I wipe it off but it returns though not immediately and there has been no noticeable drop in coolant levels. -
530d/E300td/A6 2.5TDI 3 Apr 2002 (Forum)
I am looking to purchase a Merc E300TD, an Audi A6 2.5 TDI or the BMW 530d. I have already been told that the E300TD is boring and thirsty. The 530d is a great drive but blows turbo's (BMW mechanic information) and build quality not up to the Merc. Can anyone give me some advice to assist my choice. Many thanks. -
Holiday Reading 29 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Bought an excellent second hand book - Cape Cold to Cape Hot by Richard Pape. Its 1956 and Pape recounts a drive from Norway to South Africa in an Austin A90; great reading worth a fiver of anyone's money. In the pub tonight thoughts turned to replicating the journey under C21 conditions in a Rover 45 perhaps...?!.... -
Vauxhall Dealer selling imported Opels 25 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Why would a Vauxhall franchised dealer be selling an brand new right-hand drive un-registered Opel Astra? Could this be a car imported from Ireland which was destined to be re-badged as a Vauxhall but can't now because of the recent publicity given to this illegal practice? I'm referring to the illegal practice of re-badging, not the legal practice of importing. -
Car Tax: A weeks Grace? 14 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Also, what is the deal if you need to take the car for it's MOT prior to getting Tax disc? Can you drive to the garage, or do they expect you to get towed? cheers -
ABS Warning Light/VW Corrado 12 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I have had a recurring problem with the ABS light coming on while driving. The ABS has been checked, the monitoring system has been checked and all is OK. The latest suggestion from my VW dealer is a new ABS control box - £500.00 plus labour! Any cheaper suggestions greatly appreciated. ( I can't ignore this light, in the Corrado it's fairly prominent. ) -
Windscreen chips 22 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I knew I should not have put a post slagging insurance companies, Driving home today I got a stone chip in my windscreen!! : photos of chip (Hope this works Lee H) It is very small howver it is in my field of vision, does anybody have experience of the glass welding companies as adverytised in yellow pages, could they do anything for me? -
Uninsured drivers - Tax evasion? 16 Dec 2001 (Forum)
You have to pay insurance premium tax when you get insurance. Therefore if you don't have insurance and drive a car you are not only breaking the law, but evading the payment of the tax. As the police don't seem too interested in uninsured drivers - 'they are a "problem" is what I was helpfully informed' - isn't it about time Customs and Excise cracked down on them? -
I was seduced by the Dark Side.. 4 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I've bought a Citroen for my sister. although she doesn't actually know it yet.. It wasn't my fault, it was the salesman's kids which did it........ Seriously though, I was driving, and subsequently bought, a Xantia Diesel Estate today. They're really quite surprisingly good and quite amazing value. So, from here on in, I agree with that nice Mr. Woollard about Citroens. M. -
'Dog' clutches 26 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Fairly ordinary except for the clutch, which I believe was called a 'dog' clutch, and consisted of two castellated discs which just slotted in(fairly noisily!)to transmit the drive. Can anybody think of any other car which had this type of clutch? P. -
Golf mkIV SEAT COMFORT 11 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I am 6ft tall with long legs. My short test drive does not satisfy me that the short squabs front and back are comfortable on long jouneys. No test driver has ever commented on the fact that VW has obviously shortened the seats to give the impression of space when there is not any. -
police radios 24 Oct 2001 (Forum)
heard a rumour that the new police radios being issued cause allsorts of interference - one such example is the breath test machine (nowadays an electric box) often give false readings with the new police radio's nearby... so if you get knicked for drunk driving make sure you get a proper blood test done... it would be interesting to run some tests and see if they also interfere with speed entrapment kit... -
cat converters are rubbish 10 Oct 2001 (Forum)
is there a way, indeed, is there a kind of underground movement, of bypassing the scourge of modern driving that is the cat converter, then reconnecting it for the MOT... when they need replacing half the time it is uneconomical and the car is thrown away... welll ok not half the time, rarely in fact, but still, most people when you look at the true facts without a lot of bleating emotionalism will realise that cats are a total waste of time and money, n'est pas gentlemen? -
Spark plugs 27 Sep 2001 (Forum)
I drive a Triumph 1500TC 1975 model (essentially a Dolomite). I've had the engine overhauled, a replacement distributor fitted and new carburretor parts. There seems to be a slight dead spot on pick up - overcome by pulling out the choke - but the engine then soon chokes up.
