  • 93 VW Golf 1.4 starting problem 18 Nov 2005 (Forum)
My daughter has a VW Golf with 97k on the clock, in pretty good condition and appears tight and solid. Not too fast, but well built and I think a good type of car for her to run around in. One problem that has emerged after 3 months of ownership is an occasional starting problem. Turn the key - nothing. Come back later - starts on the button. On one occasion it died soon after starting but then restarted shortly afterwards.
  • A4 windows open on their own...and rain 10 Nov 2005 (Forum)
'Twas a very soggy journey to work this morning - my pants have not felt like this since I was a very small boy. 3 questions I hope you guys can help with: - Any ideas on how to rectify the phantom windows? - How should I dry the inside of the car out? I was think of running the air con at full tilt and hot with the engine on for a while. Windows up or down? - Anything special I should do with the leather seats? Thanks for reading - any ideas you have would be very welcome indeed.
  • 1995 1.3SPi Mini won't start! 12 Oct 2005 (Forum)
For some reason, there are no sparks coming from the HT lead from the coil into the distributor cap. I have tried a new HT lead that has not made any difference. The coil has a good earth, so I'm running out of ideas?! The coil was only replaced 2 years ago. Any suggestions would be great, or does it sound like the coil has failed again? If so, is there a way to test the existing one, I don't really want to buy a new one for no reason!
  • Golf MkIV - Cuts out when engine is hot 6 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Now initially it was misfiring, so I replaced the plugs, HT leads and this weekend the ignition coil. It now runs a lot cleaner but this problem still exists... I am reluctant to go to the VW dealer (wanted 90 quid to change the leads!) - so I am wondering if anyone else has come across this problem - and if you did what you did to fix it?
  • Ford New Car Warranties 16 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Having read the warranty I have to say that I'm confused, as it seems to say that the first year is a 'base' warranty with unlimited mileage, with free of charge 2 year extension to 'Classic' cover. The wording is ambiguous, but it seems that running adjustments are not covered in the warranty, but subsequent replacements of defective parts are. So I would have to pay the labour costs to find out if any parts needed replacing. I must admit this is a first for me as I always thought that aside from wear and tear issues, any other anomaly such as this is usually looked at without question in the first 3 years .
  • Best price performance reliability??? 13 Sep 2005 (Forum)
It must perform but also carry the family in comfort (three boys who will all be teens by the time the lease 2 or 3 years runs out). I had sort of half looked at a Scooby or Evo 8 but maybe those are flights of fancy. Looking for your input guys! Thanks in advance. Bill
  • 30k + miles per yr recommendations. 406? 7 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I'm just starting a new job and need to buy a 2nd car (current employment has allowed me to share car with my wife). The run to work means I will be doing probably just over 30,000 miles per annum, so straight off I'm thinking diesel would make sense. I'm also leaning towards an auto - usually drive manual but for this high mileage change in my driving I'm thinking of minimising the hassle factor a bit.
  • VW Polo saloon (2001) tdi 90 misfire 25 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I've only posted a couple of times so please forgive me if I miss anything out. I've got a slight problem with my Polo saloon tdi 90 (non-pump duse). The engine runs fine, but seems to seriously lose power above 4000rpm, struggling to hit the redline, even in 2nd. I haven't noticed this before, but was giving the car a bit of a workout since I normally never need to rev it above 3500 and it's been lying for 2 weeks whilst we've been on holiday.
  • Vauxhall astra electronics light 23 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Ladies and Gentlemen, I wonder if you might help me with a small problem. I run a V/hall Astra 1.8 petrol on a T plate, 69000 miles. 18000 since I got it in Sept. I drive mainly on motorways and therefore at speed. I have often had the electrics light on but it goes out after a minute or so.
  • Basic Service - Skoda Favorit GLXie 3 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I want to do a "basics" service on my Skoda Favorit (1995 GLXie), hopefully so it runs a bit better (is not too bad) and better fuel economy etc. I'm planning to do: (1) Oil and filter (hasn't been done for a year/10000miles) (2) Spark plugs, Ignition leads, distributor cap and rotor arm (never done in three years I have had it but I can see sparks in dark garage on leads) (3) Fuel filter and air filter (did air filter 18months ago, never done fuel) Is there anything else should be done?
  • Porsche 944 Opinions 29 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Don't know the year but guessing at early / mid eighties (It has a dateless plate - IBZ****) Would I be wasting money on something like this or could I reasonably run it for a year or two (hundred or so miles every other weekend) and get a chunk of my money back. Just like the idea it is being sold by a large dealer and hopefully warranty. Probaly just looking for you to tell me not to go near it.
  • spark plug electrode 13 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I took the car to nearest Fiat agent who diagnosed a faulty spark plug.Apparently the central electrode had dropped out of it and had been rattling about inside the cylinder. After replacing this plug, the car was running as well as ever.It has since covered over 500mls.with no apparent ill effects.Does anyone know if this happy state of affairs is likley to continue,or are the long term risk of scoring etc.too great and i should flog the car before damage becomes apparent?
  • Renault 5 - Engine problem 10 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I have a problem with my Renault 5 from 1993 (Injection model) Failure: The engine runs fine when it is cold, but when it has reached its normal temperature the engine has a funny idea about stopping/stalling when the clutch is pressed. Sometimes it is really jumpy under light to medium load conditions as well (When it is warm).
  • 95 Golf VR6 Misfire 30 May 2005 (Forum)
This does not happen all the time and there is no pattern to when, it just randomly does it under 2000 revs. It seems like the car is running on 5 cylinders for no more than 10 secs and then clears. A month or so ago, when looking under the bonnet, I noticed that one of the plugs was arcing against the cylinder head. (It had new plugs and leads 12 months ago.)
  • Pierburg 2E2 help needed 24 May 2005 (Forum)
I have a 1990 golf driver (63,000 miles), which has the following problems that I think are stemming from the carburettor. 1. Car fires fine but after a few seconds starts to run like a bag of hammers for anything up to a couple of minutes, this problem is almost unnoticeable on a hot day 2. On longish drives at a constant speed of about 80mph the car will start to misfire, getting worse until I stop and let it magically fix it?
  • Chinese on the autobahns 19 Apr 2005 (Forum)
A representative of one of the car hire firms, when asked if he thought it was dangerous said; and I paraphrase; some of them stop on rounabouts and ignore red lights and on the autobahns a few stop on the hard shoulder to make tea and let the kids run around, but nothing serious. I think that last remark may have been a bit of Teutonic sense of humour. I rang one of my mates in Bremen, a German and he fell about laughing. He has seen nothing to worry him on his travels.
  • Another waterworks problem - Maestro TD 4 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Opening the rad cap and the air blows out. I replaced the radiator cap with no improvement. The engine is running perfectly including the heater. No loss of coolant or oil, No sign of oil in the radiator header tank and no sign of water in the oil. Temperature gauge as normal. Googling indicates a failed or failing head gasket.
  • Handbrake? What handbrake? Ford Focus 25 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Morning all, The car is running fine except for a slight handbrake problem. The handbrake won't hold the car on anything but the gentlest gradient and even then I don't trust it. It's not as bad when parked as I always have and always will leave it in gear but I negotiate a lot of traffic lights on hills and I hate leaving the brakes on.
  • M25 Jct 5 to Jct 9 Whats going on??? 22 Mar 2005 (Forum)
What is going on with the M25 Jct 9 to 5 anticlockwise this week. Every day at 3:00PM some idiot has run into the back of someone else and the reulting choas has resulted in a 2.5 hour drive home instead of the usual 1 hour. Why do people drive so frigging close to the car in front...It drives me mad.
  • mondeo mk3 tddi high fuel consumption 2 Mar 2005 (Forum)
i have just purchased a 2001 mondeo tddi 2.0l zetec(60,000miles) and am getting really bad fuel consumption, ie, 26 mpg around town, this has been consistant for 4 weeks and i have been driving like a sunday driver (im not a boy racer) the garage have done a diognostic test which did not show any engine faults, but the oil level was 1/2l above max, the mechanic said this could be the problem so he drained it out, also the air flow sensor was unplugged (i noticed this about three weeks ago) so i plugged it back in but there was no noticable difference to the engine running when i did so, have i bought a pig in a sack??? has anyone got any ideas???,
