Speeding (mostly excl cameras) Vol 35 4 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I was caught speeding in France over the week-end (140 km/h instead of 90 km/h). I was not stopped by the police, just got caught by a flash camera. Does anyone know what could that lead to? I know that a new legilslation will be enforced by 2007 but until then, what should I expect? -
Euro breakdown cover 28 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Can anyone recommend a Euro break down cover policy ? I have a pretty straighforward Vectra and am planning 8 days in France in July , if the difference is not too great I would consider annual cover . I've done some looking on the web already and discovered that fro what appears to be the same level of cover the RAC charge £46.55 comapred to a not-known insurer who want £28! -
Foreigners 29 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Do the drivers of foreign registered cars caught speeding by the UK revenue cameras receive a ticket back home in France or wherever ? Or can they belt around sticking up two fingers...so to speak. (Actually most of them that hit the motorway at night in the rain only a minute after getting off the ferry at Portsmouth seem pretty intimidated judging by the way they try to keep out of everyone's way :) ) -
Alfa sportwagon - friend or foe? 23 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Now I'm too old for the f and g but I fancy a 156 sportwagon with the 5-cylinder diesel (I live in France). Anybody know anything, good or bad, on them? Don't hold back! -
Buying a car from Europe and shipping it 11 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I live in the US where any car of any worth drinks petrol like there's no tomorrow. I want to research buying a car from Europe, i.e. left hand drive, maybe Luxembourg, France or Germany, and shipping it to the USA. Does anyone know anything about this? I'm looking at a Diesel vehicle, primarily, probably a Mondeo. Thanks! Phil -
French Diesel Prices 28 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Just returned from 2 weeks in France and am totally confused as to their diesel pricing. Prices I saw ranged from 0.71 euro to o.89 euro per litre which is an amazing differance and what amazed me even more was seeing filling stations yards (sorry meters) apart selling diesel at widely differing prices. -
Galaxy Cambelt Change 17 Jul 2002 (Forum)
It has done 100k miles and he needs to know whether the cambelt should be changed before he goes to France on holiday. In a previous post HJ suggested that the cambelt is a chain - does this mean that a change is not required? If that is the case then should his Ford dealership have agreed to book it in for a change when there are no rattles and the car is running well? -
Bulk Diesel 23 Jun 2002 (Forum)
A colleague has just told me there are companies just the other side of the channel who will deliver a bowser of diesel at French prices (currently about 30p a litre less than UK prices) to your home. The only condition is you have to go to France to order and pay for it and there's obviously a rental charge for the bowser. Any of you helpful backroomers know anything about this? Sounds too good to be true, but if it is, count me in :o) Terry -
french garages 22 May 2002 (Forum)
Renault bits are expensive here as is labour - Is it be fair to assume that as every other car in france is a renault, then parts/labour would be cheaper. -
car import/export 4 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Does anyone have any experience of what is required to export a British registered car to mainland Europe (France)? I know that the V5 allows you to state that the vehicle has been exported and that seems a clear cut case as far as the DVLA are concerned. But what about on the Calais side of things? Getting a new French V5 and control technique (MOT) are another pot of fish. -
Diesel Prices 9 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Is this true nationally and is anyone aware of a public explanation from the oil companies?. Off to France next week, interesting to see if hypermarket prices there are still at the same 4.90 litre as in the summer. -
French buzz 2 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Go to France if you want a buzz in your fast car. According to this week's "Canard Enchaine", motorway police allow a leeway of 30 k.p.h. over the maximum speed (in good conditions) of 130 k.p.h. , plus another 10 k.p.h. to allow for radar inaccuracies. -
Why does charging an EV have to be such a complicated process? 1 Nov 2018 (Ask HJ)
I have just bought a 2017 Nissan Leaf with a 30kW battery. I have been looking at recharging points across the country and in France but am now very confused... -
£465 fine plus confiscation re radar detector in F 4 Apr 2002 (Forum)
from a letter to a British MEP: A British motorist driving in France was stopped on the A10 south of Poitiers, and told that he would be fined for possession of a radar detector, even though it was not switched on. If it had been, the fine would have been twice as great. -
Peugeot-Citroen - Stellantis PureTech Guarantee 20 Jan 2025 (Forum)
No doubt the guarantee will require that the servicing has been carried out at an approved dealer. At present only for customers in France and Spain but they promise to widen the customer base until the end of Feb. -

Ford Mercedes Vauxhall - Car Scrappage Scheme 15 Sep 2017 (Forum)
Interesteing article in the Sunday Times about a reader who has a 2002 Passat TDI with 180K miles which has taken him on holiday to France involving a 2000 mile trip, with no problems. Real trade in value £100 but the car has £76 of fuel in the tank. The reader has absolutely no interest in getting £2000 for his beloved car against a £22k Focus. -
VW polo V - Headlight converters - help ! 17 May 2011 (Forum)
I have a new polo with large plastic lensed h'lights which I want to take to France on holiday. With my old cars I just stuck some black tape on the lights over markings on the glass lenses. With this car there are no markings on the lenses and my vw garage advises fitting lense protectors first and then sticking their expensive stickers to those to avoid damaging the plastic ! -
Priorite a droite - what is the point? 19 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Just returned from a cracking trip to France on my motorbike. The roads/drivers were no problem , just could not get my head around 'priorite a droite' (hope I have spelt this correctly!) though, what is the point of this rule? I only ask as I cannot see why users of minor roads should have 'priority' over users of some main roads - just seems downright dangerous to me!
