  • Has the dealer breached the law and what can I do? 3 Apr 2024 (Forum)
The repair was paid for by the previous owner's insurance, which proves that the vehicle had a front-end collision before and was repaired (perhaps poorly). After doing some research, I believe I'm covered by consumer protection legislation. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires vehicles to be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. Otherwise, I have the right to reject the vehicle within 30 days.
  • I bought a Mazda 3 four months ago - a fault has now occurred, can I claim the cost of repairs from the garage? 29 Oct 2017 (Ask HJ)
I bought a Mazda 3 2.2d in June this year. Four months later, the oil pressure light is on. The dealership warranty was only for 60 days. Who do I set...
  • What do you think of the new car buying services where the vehicles are delivered to your door? 9 Dec 2020 (Ask HJ)
Every car I've bought in the past from a dealer has been taken for a test drive, to get used to the size of the vehicle or simply to make sure it sounded...
  • VW Touareg - 8 month old car new/used parts for warranty repair 28 Jun 2016 (Forum)
At such a young age, do I have to accept a re-manufactured replacement or can I insist on a new component? The car was bought after 1st October 2015 so the new Consumer Rights Act applies and I'm aware I can demand a refund if this fault occurs again after repair.
  • Merc Vito 108cdi - Serpentine belt 26 Oct 2012 (Forum)
In the meantime they suggest I buy another from them and await the result of the tests. Is this the correct way to go? Do I have any rights under consumer law to demand a replacement immediately? I was willing to go with a straight replacement, but now I feel as though I should request the costs associated with a replacement, ie: new belt and additional costs for a mechanic to fit it once again.
  • Some questions about wheel bearings 5 Mar 2008 (Forum)
(car has 70,000 on the clock) 2) What factors would cause a wheel bearing to wear out faster? 3) Would a Berlingo wheel bearing be a time-consuming item to fit? 4) Would a Berlingo wheel bearing be a fairly unique part, or would it be the same as other Citroen wheel bearings? 5) MOT was done by a Citroen dealer. Should I have expected them to tell me that the only problem was a wheel bearing, and offer to put the problem right there and then?

  • Volvo V90 - Repairs on new (to me) car 23 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Need some advice on where I stand with my consumer rights, if anybody has the knowledge. Earlier this month I picked up a Volvo V90 from an independent dealer. The day after delivery it threw an error code for the left tail light. Dealer I bought from said if I got them a price they’d “see what they can do” about paying for it...
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - recently bought car has had previous crash repair? 15 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I am feeling a little foolish now for not noticing some tell tale signs. My question is what consumer rights do I have here. I have read some of the Scottish Law in relation to purchasing second hand cars but nothing is that specific. After giving £9k I am annoyed I am the proud owner of a crashed car.
  • My 8-year-old Kia has a long list of issues despite being lightly used. Do you agree this is unacceptable? 26 Jul 2021 (Ask HJ)
I own an 8-year-old Kia Sportage that I bought from my local Kia dealer 7.5 years ago with 2500 miles on the clock. Since then, the car has been serviced...
  • What's the legal definition of a new car? 2 May 2014 (Ask HJ)
We have just purchased a new Vauxhall Meriva. Prior to purchasing it we asked about it being the new facelift model (since Oct 2013) rather than the pre-facelift...
  • Car blew up & and was stolen the same day I bought 13 Jul 2024 (Forum)
I have some assumptions about what's transpired here (pretty easy to jump to conclusions) but I'm going to let the police do their job (or not). I thought I understood my consumer rights pretty well, but I'm confused about whether I have any legal recourse without the vehicle. Could I still take them to small claims court? I have a trail of evidence with regard to the fault.
