  • VW Golf MK2 losing water 14 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I have checked the oil filler cap for mayo or white residue but it looks fine, although the engine bay has a steamy sort of smell after a run which leads me to think that maybe one of the hoses is letting go? Any ideas anyone? Thanks, Barg.
  • Why are some cars dogs? 3 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Can't be a Friday afternoon car as the various sub assemblies are made and bolted together on different days. What is about certain makes that leads to some samples being complete dogs? Ever heard of a Micra or a Yaris with a series of faults. No? Thought not.

  • refreshing change, 89 polo stalling 2 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Well loved but sick 89 1050cc polo, Has been taking noticeable longer than usual to start recently, and currently dies after about 20 sec of idling, runs ok with a bit of right foot, suspect the in line fuel filter, any other ideas? Spark plugs ok, rotor arm and distributor carp ok, leads ok, coolant and oil look ok. Has had a habit of getting a strong vacuum in the fuel tank making fuel cap difficult to remove. Recently replaced fuel pump,
  • VW Passat-poor radio reception 22 Oct 2001 (Forum)
I have tried a replacement roof mounted aeriel from VW but this did not help. I have also substituted the lead from the radio to the aeriel, but still no good. If I connect another aeriel to the radio I get perfect reception. I could fit another aeriel somewhere on the vehicle but there must be something else I can do.
  • Car accident insurance advice 29 Jan 2018 (Forum)
The Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal and upheld the conclusion of the trial judge that the plaintiff, who was the driver of the vehicle that rear ended the lead vehicle, was not at all responsible for the accident. The above case confirms that if a driver of a lead vehicle unexpectedly stops the driver of the following vehicle may not be at all at fault for running into the back of the stopping vehicle.
  • Ford Focus - Car starts then starts, then doesn't... 14 Sep 2018 (Forum)
My wife was driving the car for a few miles two days ago, stopped the car then after 5 minutes it wouldn't start, she left it, came back a few hours later and it started right away, drove it home about 5 miles no problem and the next morning, same problem, wouldn't start, called out the breakdown and they said it was the battery, (still original battery),took car to chemix garage and the guy tested the battery under load and said it had plenty of life left in it and said he didn't want to change it as wasting money  and said no point changing battery,  he said probably a sticking starter, I was convinced until last night, tried the car and it tried to start engine, but could see the panel lights dimming, decided to put the lights on and it got worse and worse, left it, got jumper leads and connected it up, still same thing, took them off and was going to give up, connected them directly to battery this time (previously I had connect the negative to the body earth), It started, left it for a minute, switched it off, put lights on again and it started, took the jumper leads off and tried it again with lights on, started easily!
  • 2002 VW Passat 2.0L 130bhp AZM Engine (petrol), Cylinder 3 Misfire, out of ideas 4 Jul 2012 (Forum)
I have completed the following checks and run out of ideas: 1) Cleared the codes and restarted engine. 2) Replaced the spark plugs with new ones. 3) Old spark plugs were in good condition with no oil, no deposits and the electrodes in good condition. 4) Checked HT lead condition and found no corrosion, a tight fitting cap and no damage to cable. 5) Earthed the HT lead and have strong spark when engine turns over. 6) Checked the injector electrical connections with a bulb tester and all is fine. 7) Removed the fuel rail and extracted cylinder 3 injector. 8) Performed a visual inspection of injector with all looking good and no blockages at the jets. 9) Tested the injector on the bench using a 12V battery to ensure it opens and closes correctly. 10) Replaced the injector in the rail and turned the engine over to check for blockages, with all injectors operating. 11) Swapped cylinder 3 and 4 injectors (misfire still on cylinder 3, no change) 12) Inspected fuel and air connections and ensured no leaks. 13) Checked the engine oil condition with no evidence of water contamination (head gasket) Any ideas would be most welcome
  • Peugeot 106 - Coil Pack Problem 17 May 2012 (Forum)
I tested the power feed going into the coil pack with a multimtre and there is no power..  This is where I get a bit stuck really.  I know the power lead must eventually go to the battery but it's not a straight connection.  The power lead goes into another bunch of wires which are all bound together and dissappear round the engine.  Does anyone have any ideas of what might be the cause of my problem and how to fix it.
  • Renault Clio II Petrol - 16 V Extreme 53 - Renault Clio - loss of power, exhaust popping 31 Aug 2011 (Forum)
which he said could be fraying wires but wasn't at the moment. My second mechanic changed-: - all spark plugs - coil pack and leads - one of the fuel injectors The emissions warning light then intermittently appeared (flashing) and tended to come on with high revs and/or over 20/30mph. The third mechanic read the fault codes which gave the fault as on spakr plug/lead number 4 (apologies for the non-technical language).
  • Daewoo Matiz 800cc 2001 - Daewoo Matiz no power!? Engine check flashing 26 Aug 2011 (Forum)
They said it would most lightly be the coil pack or the head gasket. They suggested changing the plugs, leads and coil pack and a cost of £200!! And they also said they'd carry out a compression test to rule out it being the head gasket. Simply don't have the money to get it done, so I changed the leads but still no joy, is my next step to buy a used coil pack and try that or should I go down a diff avenue (i don't want to waste money i haven't got) My brother who sadly lives in austrailia so isn't here to help, said the spark plugs should be fine as they were only changed in march and to check the oil tank for 'mayo' which indicates it being the head gasket, I've done this and it looks fine.
  • Mazda 121 - 1.3 - 1996 - Draining Battery 25 Feb 2011 (Forum)
I have also crawled thro the fuse boxes, nothing blown I am not a mechanic, or an electrician, but I was always pretty sure that a lead connected to the positive should not also be somehow connecting to the earth system.  Any pointers or Help would be much appreciated. Thanks
  • Reanualt Clio 2 - Clio 2 2004 1.2 16v - Rough Running 15 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Started thinking Lambda, ECU, Crank Sensor, Loom , you know all those lovely things Renault would charge an arm and a leg for but stopped and went right back to basics, car starts fine with no engine light on, runs like a lumpy pig so going back the days before ECU's and Laptops I would have said H.T lead or maybe coil so checked out a part number with Europarts as the coil pack and leads are one unit and priced at £28.00 thought its worth a go before we get into Diagnostics mumbo jumbo where you pay and don't always get the correct answer !
  • Renault Clio 1 Petrol RT 1.4 - Misfire and general roughness 18 Apr 2010 (Forum)
For a few weeks now its been misfiring badly. It was misfiring a while ago, but was solved with new plug leads, distributor cap and rotor arm. About 3 weeks ago, the misfire returned. Its not consistent though, which is confusing. Sometimes it will run fine, but then others it will bog down when accelerating, mostly when in 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear.

  • Fitting a parrot handsfree 2 Mar 2008 (Forum)
My only problem was trying to get the radio out - couldn't get the keys anywhere and eventually had to ask a friendly car audio installer for a loan of his keys for 2 mins. Apart from that the Parrot comes with leads that are all shaped so that they can only fit one other fiting so there is no doubt where any of them go. If your radio is not ISO then you need to get a separate lead - Halfords will charge £20 for this but available for about half that on the net.
  • Mondeo Diesel run dry 17 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Then we had one more go and found that it would not even turn over, then it turned over but grudgingly (not like before) the leads were warm but my battery was still good and I had my engine revving so it should have been ok. I don't understand why it suddenly stopped turning over and then only grudgingly? But I was not the one starting the car so it could have been incompetence on the part of the guy who was trying to start it.

It's done 117,000 miles, and i don't really want to start buying parts to guess what the problem may be. Does anyone know if replacing any of the following might cure the problem? Plug leads Idle speed sensor on gearbox Oxygen (Lamda) Sensor (The exhaust does pop a bit too) If you can help in any way, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Qashqai - Qashqai 1st Gen---faults and reliability? 14 Dec 2021 (Forum)
For example, batteries dying prematurely, apparently having the highest breakdown rate of all vehicles in the UK (thisismoney article), suspension problems, premature timing belt failure, windscreen leak---leading to water ingress, front suspension lower ball joints not seating correctly, power steering and rack/pinion problems, etc. Can any users verify this? What have you experienced and do you regret your decision to buy?
