Toyota - Blown head gasket 2nd opinion? 29 Dec 2016 (Forum)
He said he had done a sniff test and it tested positive. Is it worth me getting a 2nd opinion? There was coolant all over the engine so would that cause a positive reading? Sorry I don't know much about cars so I guess I am clutching at straws. The garage quotes round £1500 to fix it. Is that the going rate? -

wife bought the car new in feb 2012 from arnold clark glasgow , got full service end jan 2013 at same garage - 5000 miles . engine temp light came on on way home from work , topped up coolant and light went off and ok for rest of week . went on motorway following week and light came on again , pulled in at services and topped up again an light went off , decided to drive home instead of carrying on , light came on again on motorway and pulled off at nearest exit , car broke down . got rac to tow it to same garage , got report later that there was a faulty coolant pipe and the engine had overheated to failure , vauxhall say they wont repair car under warranty because it was driven 59 miles from time light first came on till last time even tho it went off inbetween , they say she drove the car to destruction and want £4000 for replacement engine , where do we stand ? -
Rover 400, T reg - Rover water leak 5 Jun 2012 (Forum)
Just wondering, firstly would the absence of typical head gasket failure symptoms DEFINITELY rule that out, and secondly, does this model have any particular weaknesses in the coolant system to allow a starting point for diagnosis of the location of the leak? Cheers in advance. -
Rover 25 (1999 - 2005) - 03 1.6 --losing water 10 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Bit of advice please, guys. The coolant expansion tank of my son's Rover 25 regularly requires topping up--at the current rate of loss it would probably go totally dry in a matter of a couple of weeks. There are no other obvious signs of head gasket failure; no mayo under the oil filler cap nor on the dipstick, and the car drives just fine, usually starting first time. -
Golf 1.4 cooling system pressure 6 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Undoing the expansion bottle cap releases the pressure with a surge and then the hose is all soft again. Any ideas on this as I don't think it's normal. Head gasket looms to mind but the coolant has no signs of oil nor any water in oil. Nor mayonnaise round oil filler cap. Doesn't appear to lose coolant either. I thought I might get another expansion bottle cap from a breaker in case this wasn't releasing any pressure ------- believe me that top hose gets very hard so there must be alot of pressure building up. -
Fiesta 1.25 Zetec 12 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Car ten years old and 37,000 miles. What should I do other than obvious service items? 3. I want to change the coolant. Given this is a Japanese designed aluminium engine (I think Yamaha), is there a special coolant and anti-freeze I should use? 4. What oil grade? 5. Anything else. The radio code is lost. Is there a way to sort this out without removing the radio itself? -
citroen ax starting problems 2 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I also had to top up the coolant levels with about 1/2 litre, though they were all topped up and checked when the car was fixed - on 22nd May. I can't see any visible leaks coming from below the car. Has anyone had any similar problems to this? -
Loss of power in Rover Metro 998cc 20 Nov 2002 (Forum)
She did overheat on Friday night, and she has been getting worse since then. There is no mayo on the oil filler cap. She has always lost coolant (throught the heater fins), so its difficult to know whether she has lost more than usual, but I have a suspicion she HAS lost coolant. No bubbles in the radiator filler tank when running though. -
Kenlowe Hot-Start 7 Feb 2001 (Forum)
I have a year-old Focus tdi, which I hope to keep for a long time! I bought Hot-Start, on the basis of its manufacturer's claims that, by heating the coolant to 80C, it eliminates most cold-start wear & high fuel consumption. It has a built-in 3Kw heater & a pump, which is plumbed into the heater circuit. Fitting is claimed to be 'an easy DIY job'. Comments? -
Volvo XC60 - Really need some advice - faulty car from garage 3 Sep 2021 (Forum)
I purchased a 16 plate car from a local garage on 13th August. Went to collect the car and as soon as I drove it off the forecourt noticed an engine coolant warning. Walked straight back into the garage to raise this to be told it was due to new coolant being added and the system not registering etc etc - forgive me I have very basic car knowledge. Was assured after the manager drove it that it had plenty of coolant and the warning would disappear and if not, they would collect and fix this. -
Vauxhall Astra 2014 - Used car purchased-faults - dealership not refundi 14 Oct 2018 (Forum)
Hi I brought a Vauxhall Astra 4 weeks ago from a used car dealer. Within a 3/4 days I had a engine message saying the coolant was low. So I took it to my mechanic he said to just fill it up with coolant which I did. Within a few days the engine message came up again. So I emailed the dealer and explain to them what happened and also The fact that water was somehow getting into the door and I had a bucket load of water after one night of heavy rainfall. -
Citroen Berlingo 1.9D 54 plate - 'Unsolvable' over-heating problem! 27 Dec 2014 (Forum)
Once it gets there, it takes quite a while to come back down even coasting and blipping the throttle to maintain coolant flow. I managed to stabilise it at 65mph, bang on 90C. What I have tried so far: Numerous thermostats and coolant changes. Upper and lower radiator hoses New radiator fitted in January (It is a Nissens part - anyone in the trade care to comment if these are OEM quality?) -

Ford Ka - cooling system and overheating 29 Dec 2013 (Forum)
I've just had a bit of a saga with my 05 50k 1.3 duratec Ka cooling system and thought a few of my experiences might be useful to someone with this car. First problem was a split header tank which is a regular problem leading to lost coolant and overheating. Fixed it and thena few months later overheating again in a major way. system ran out of coolant and light came on. Found the plastic thermostat manifold on the right side was cooked and had broken letting rapid loss of coolant. -

Will Black Pepper fix leaking radiator? 5 Feb 2015 (Forum)
My radiator is leaking nearly all the coolant out after the engine is turned off. I've heard that putting some black pepper in can work as a temporary fix, does anyone know if this works? If so ,how much should go in,and should it be coarsely or finely ground? -

1999 4.6 LPG - Range Rover Head Gasket? 11 Nov 2010 (Forum)
My Rangie seems to have split the HG (or worse!) coolant boiled and blew out dramatically the other day. Is this a scrap job? From what I hear it is not going to be worth me repairing, due to having no skills/time/money. Any thoughts?
