  Its plug-in petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain propels it to 62mph in 4.3 seconds and on to 174mph, by combining a 299PS 1.6-litre turbo engine with twin 115PS electric motors, for a total 400PS output and four-wheel drive. Despite that it returns 117.6mpg on average, says Volkswagen, and it can drive around 30 miles on battery power alone.   Jaguar today issued the first official pictures of the new X Type to go on sale in the UK in Summer 2001. This four-wheel-drive four-door saloon car will have 2.5 litre and 3.0 litre V6 engines derived from the 24 valve Ford V6 and will compete against the new Audi A4, the BMW 3 Series, the Mercedes Benz C Class, the Volvo S60 and the Lexus IS200.
