  • Car theft 1 Aug 2002 (Forum)
25 cds were nicked Over 200 quid worth of damage to the steering column and both front door locks trashed. Plus use of near on a full tank of fuel and other minor bits. Forget the small claims court as i wont get anything out of a car thief! thats the whole reason they nicked it in the first place. the police muttered something about criminal compensation something or other if they get conficted?
  • Volkswagen Golf TDI 115 PD - Juddering 2 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Volkswagen repalced a 'temperature management something or other' which came up a a fault on the engine diagnostics test. They had then replaced the seals on the fuel injectors/injection system?, however the juddering fault continues. I am not particulalry clued up on cars and therefore have no idea really, as to what could be wrong. Has this happened on other Golfs?
  • Vauxhall Ecotec 12 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Its the latest type with drive-by-wire and chain driven cams (it looks like a 4-cylinder version of the wheezy 1.0 12v) and it goes very well considering its low output - its also great on fuel. The car has done 23k miles and has recently been serviced by the local vauxhall dealer using vauxhalls own fully synythetic oil (as specified in the manual) which is 5w-40. Imagine my shock to discover major amounts of 'mayonaise' sludge under the oil filler cap!
  • VAG Diesels 11 Feb 2002 (Forum)
And before the DERV brigade start writing abuse..... just try the new TDCI Focus, performs just like a petrol and doesn't even sound like a diesel except if you are outside. You can buy a lot of fuel for the £1200 premium though. Until I drove the 130Tdi I was on the point of buying an A4 Avant, the experience has so soured my view of the car that I probably won't buy now.

In congestion, no matter how small and efficient ythe engine, it still burns fuel whilst idling and going nowhere, increasing local pollution levels. So the mandated test regime for determining CO2 output includes a simulated drive cycle which in turn includes a period of idling.
  • Jensen Interceptor - A day with an Interceptor 23 Aug 2014 (Forum)
Of course it had its niggles:  an oil leak left a stain on my drive (it was marking its territory, I’m sure), the clock didn't work, nor the fuel flap release switch – it had to be opened manually from within the boot.  Speaking of fuel, it used 20 gallons in those 270 miles, which is 13.5mpg.  But what a car.
  • Vauxhall Vectra C - Halfords Auto centre 17 May 2012 (Forum)
The guy (Alan) then recommended a friend of his who could remove the petrol and replace it with diesel fuel as Halfords couldn't do this. I took the phone number from him and thanked him for his time. The guy also never charged me and said not to mention !Halfords to anyone as he would get in trouble for recommending his friend, unknowing what was to follow I agreed.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 98 1.3 engine management fusing (F28) 8 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Once the towtruck dropped me and the car off at the layby after the bridge, I toiled and toiled serching all the visible wiring and unplugging the ascosiated sensors (camshaft pos. sensor, throttle pos. sensor, mass air flow sensor, EGR solenoid, the fuel pump and both the 'power on' and 'fuel pump' relays, having not had any luck with any of these, and also the fuel injectors were working correctly also. I had deduced that it had to be an short circuit somewhere shorting against the body of the car somewhere, but this could be anywhere on the car at all. after I got towed home to burntisland, I had almost used up all my spare fuses, and all that I had left was a 30A fuse, double the correct rating, so I plugged it in and switched the ignition on, testing the m.a.f sensor and I noticed a small wisp of smoke and the unmistakable smell of burning pvc, coming from just under the air intake and m.a.f sensor.
  • Need your help please.... 21 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Again it came out after just 2 hours, we felt confident... 19th October, it happened again!! The dealer changed the ECU and asked what fuel we were using, we told them it was a good make, but they said NO, dont use that....use this brand! I thought that can not be right for them to dictate a fuel brand but nether the less told my member of staff to use what they said.
  • Hyundai Tucson Diesel 2019 Plate. - DPF ISSUE 12 Aug 2025 (Forum)
Hi All I bought my 2019 Tuscon when it was 6 months old, despite doing on average 10 miles a day during the week and longer runs at the weekend and on holidays etc, it had zero issues, I broke my ankle last September, the Car  was stationary for 2 months and has been a nightmare since, essentially around 15-20 miles the dpf light comes on, and then the Engine warning light, a few months ago the Engine light went out and obviously the dpf light goes out/resets when the car is turned off, i use nothing but Esso premium fuel and have tried a lot of different dpf cleaners, a friend who's a mechanic has looked at the car and he cannot see why there's a problem, and that the dpf maybe faulty, I suspect that the 2 months the car was sat still caused a soot build up, can anyone recommend a solution please.
  • Mazda 3 - £12-15k reliable and comfortable daily 11 Sep 2024 (Forum)
Considerations Ive made so far Mazda 3 (2019+): seems to get very frequently suggested on other sites; I really like its looks as well as interior with physical controls.  Toyota Corolla: sounds like it gets better fuel economy, and obviously has the bulletproof reliability Toyota are known for. My main concern is whether any sort of driving enjoyment for the times I'm not commuting are too far removed Lexus CT200h, IS300h: unfortunately these cost more to insure, plus I personally don't like how dated the interiors or the infotainment systems are Volvo V60: unsure how likely to find anything worthwhile in budget, also unsure how reliability compares What are your thoughts on these options?
  • Volkswagen Sharan - Buying used car - sufficient power? 16 Aug 2024 (Forum)
One we've seen, and most seem similar, says it's 148bhp, 185.00 lbs/ft engine torque and 34 mpg combined fuel consumption.   As you can probably tell, I'm a bit at sea so any advice would be appreciated!    thanks
  • Anyone bought a used tesla? 31 Dec 2023 (Forum)
My biggest concern would be the risk of the battery going kaput but apart from that, is it worth the risk? I'd save a lot on fuel but not nearly enough to justify the car. I kind of just want a Tesla after driving a friend's and being blown away.  I'm a single man and don't care about practical / boot space / rear seat space etc.
  • Big SUV-type cars - - not dead yet 1 Oct 2023 (Forum)
The 'stop oil' brigade would be horrified, although perhaps pleased to see all grades of fuel here are now above $6 a gallon (3.8 litres).   Nearly forgot to mention a VW Atlas!
  • Volkswagen Golf - Loss of power and engine shake missing? 29 Jun 2023 (Forum)
Could the current VW diesel problem be missing, then further affecting runnng because of the incorrect fuel in the exhaust etc confusing the computer??? Or EGR .... OR???? Could the low oil affect something with knock on effects?
  • Any - V888 form - time for DVLA to respond? 27 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Some of you might recall that I permanently live in Austria. We were visiting family at Christmas and we needed fuel at Dover on arrival on 23rd Dec. While I was literally finishing filling up, another car tried to squeeze past ours (we were parked at the front pump of two), took some chunks out of the rear wing/bumper/wheel arch trim of our CR-V because the gap wasn't big enough, and drove off without stopping.

  • Mazda 6 Tourer - 2.2d Auto - Cold Start Problem 6 Jan 2022 (Forum)
I thought is might be battery related, but I changed it about 2 weeks ago and I still have the issue. Any thoughts? I was thinking glow plugs or fuel pump. I was thinking injectors, but the car starts fine when warm which is the opposite of what I have read. Some other bits.... Car has done 86k miles. It was built in 2016. No engine warning lights Car has a full service history and had a major service about 4 months ago.
  • Torn between a Passat and an A4 Avant- HELP!? 9 Oct 2021 (Forum)
As it has a list price of over 40k it qualifies for the extra tax, however I think I could offset that by saving on fuel during most of its use. I have also spotted a 2016 2L petrol A4 Avant with 25k miles which I love - but for some reason I feel it is not the sensible choice. If we keep the car for 3 or 4 years, I feel it will be easier to sell the Audi and it will hold its value better but then again, PHEVs seem to be getting more popular so I have just been going round in circles.
  • Any - Time to sell privately 13 Jun 2021 (Forum)
It is a 1.8 ES 2012 with nearly 90000 miles on the clock, but it ahead on its servicing and has been maintained carefully fir the 6 years we have had it (extra oil changes/premium fuel etc). It is advertised bang on the autotrader estimate of £4250, trade examples are a good £1000 or more. Thinking we would be happy to see it go around the £3.8-4K mark. The car buying group are offering £3090, if that is helpful.
