  • American anger over BP oil leak 29 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I mean, It`s an accident isn`t it? It`s not as though BP has said `your mega trucks that you use as personal transport use so much fuel -- that we`ll just flood the Gulf of Mexico with oil and it should last you a week or so given your world leading consumption`. Best start filling up at BP stations to prop them up - I suppose ;-) Yawn..
  • Skoda Octavia II 2010 - VW group 1.6 turbo diesel engine and DPF etc 11 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Anyone know any links to explain how the DPF works, and any problems, as I know the Fiat version can have problems, as the "burning cycle" requires extra fuel, and if this does not turn off it has caused problems with sumps being filled with diesel. Nice to drive, apart from occasional minor power drop, hardly noticeable, as if glow plugs and air con kicked in together, and CD player does not illustrate the CD name and track name.
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 95 1.8 High exhaust emissions at high idle. 12 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I have also replaced the air filter and the coolant temperature sensor. A local mechanic has suggested that I put an injector cleaner into the fuel and let it do it's stuff before I take it in for a retest. He has also told me that there is no adjustment of the idle settings on the car. If anybody has any other suggestions / ideas please fire away.
  • How much have you spent on motoring over the years 4 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Over the 10 years I have been driving, it comes to; 7 cars - £3225 Repairs @ £500pa - £5000 Fuel 193,000miles @ ave £0.10/pile - £19,300 Totted up comes up around £2,800pa or £230ish a month. I read that drivers pay an average of 3k per year so again roughly avarage. The car figure is total expenditure out.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 97 1.25 Car losing power when accelerating esp. up 11 Dec 2009 (Forum)
As you can imagine this can be a bit dangerous when driving on the motorway/at junctions/roundabouts! As a result it also appears to be drinking much more fuel, presumably due to the uneven nature of my acceleration! This has only been happening in the last week or so (I drove through a Ford a week ago-will the water have had an effect?) although it has always been a bit dodgy in this respect- for example when I would put my foot flat on the accelerator (especialy in high gears) not much would happen, and it accelerated better when I released my foot from the pedal a little.

  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Which Mondeo Estate 4 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I'm loking to spend about 5k cash, and will be looking at private / auction / ebabay , rather than traders. So, I guess the fuel costs will be a few hundred less per year if I risk a diesel but what are the downsides ? What could I get for 5k ? I tend to use car as workhorse with all kinds of rubbish in the back , so don't fancy leather interiors etc, no ghia specs thanks.
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 99 1.2 engine light on & won't run properly 2 Nov 2009 (Forum)
hello ive recently changed a engine on a 1,2 16v corsa.i seen the new engine runnin before i changed it,whilst changing it i noticed a plastic connector was broken on the fuel injection system so i took the old one off the old engine and put it onto the new engine.included injectors, carb, other parts with it.all cos scrapyard were animals taken it out!!anyway i started the engine and its hard to start idles very low to start with n like its choking when u press throtle no respsonse n wonts to stall.if u let it warm for a minute it will tick over o.k but when reved it very splutery but will go through the revs.the engine light is on but havent had time yet or money to find out what for.ive changed the sparks and done full service on the car, tried changing the coil packs over from new engine from old and had no effect.anyone help????
  • Who thinks of these stupid routes on Motorways 26 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Why could'nt they divert the traffic onto the M48 from the M4 near Almondsbury, to go over the old Severn bridge to Chepstow then A48 saving wasted fuel. The M49 could be closed at the M5 Avonmouth and diverted to Almondsbury along the M5 to join the M4, as the M49 serves the new Severn bridge. It can't be that the old bridge can't cope as they divert to this bridge when the other is closed for such as falling ice as last winter.
  • Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 93 1.2 Won't start from cold 26 Aug 2009 (Forum)
When it eventually starts, it coughs and splutters (and is generally lumpy) for about 2 minutes and then runs fine. Once the engine has warmed up, it runs perfectly, although there may be a slight increase in fuel consumption. Following advice on this site, I have changed the CTS, but this has had no effect. The main problem is, that I can only test the fault when the car is stone cold, as even up to 4 hours after it has been running it will still start ok.
  • Hyundai Coupe (2002 - 2008) - Harleyman's suggestion ! 10 Jul 2009 (Forum)
If so, is it hard to do? (I do quite a lot of work on my 944 myself, but it's a bit of a beast to work on) What sort of fuel consumption do you get? Anyway, good suggestion, thanks. (Also went from the Coupe to looking at Toyota Celicas, but that's another story :s) Many thanks, Giles Drop down menus empowered and subject line tweaked
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 95 1.2 Engine wont start after engine swap 27 Jun 2009 (Forum)

  • Vauxhall Corsa D (2006 - ) - 06 1.3 Yellow engine 'spanner' and missing 17 Apr 2009 (Forum)
It's been fine for 4 months since then, but happened again this morning, exactly the same circumstances. First time I thought it might have been the fuel filter or something but that was replaced in the service. It's at 31K miles now. Any thoughts?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.8 Confusion over acceptable oil grade to use? 13 Mar 2009 (Forum)
However, further down the page below where it says engine oil top-up it says that 5w30, 10w40 or 5w40 oil can be used albeit with reduced fuel economy, performance etc. Does Ford mean that e.g. 10w40 can be used for a complete oil change (as it says "top-up" it doesn't say by what amount e.g. 1 litre or more) or only for topping up. Even more confusing, the Hayne's manual for this model says that 5w30, 10w40 or 5w40 can be used but higher viscosities e.g. 15w40 could cause damage.
  • Peugeot 806 MPV (1995 - 2003) - 01 2.0 Expert HDi Lack of Power 12 Feb 2009 (Forum)
The condition now appears to be there permanently. Over several weeks I have replaced MAF and diaphragm. I have also replaced return pipe in fuel line as all these required replacement. Each time these seemed to cure/help the problem for a limited period of time. I have had the fault codes read several times which helped with diagnosing the parts already replaced but yesterday the code displayed was: Diagnose Code ( 000246 Relay A Of Turbocompressor Exhaust Valve I have no idea what this means.
  • Ford C-MAX (2003 - 2010) - 04 1.6 tdci Total Excellium Diesel 11 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Whilst researching this problem I came across a Lexus Owners club website and they were reporting the same problem with their cars also associated with Excellium Diesel . Has anybody else experienced problems with this fuel ?
  • Volkswagen Passat (2005 - ) - 2007 170 PDi - Is my DPF blocking up? 17 Jan 2009 (Forum)
My understanding of the DPF is that if my driving style doesn't suit the DPF then it starts to block up. The response of the engine management system is to increase the fuel mix being burnt to increase exhaust temperatures. If this doesn't work my engine warning light comes on and I need a new filter! Ouch! Is there any way to find out how happy my DPF is with my regular commute to work?
  • New Lada - 43 years young 10 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Now us westerners will probably think so what, but the Lada 2107 in many ways is the worlds best selling car, some reports suggest they have sold more than the VW Beatle and the last version was sold unupdated from 1980 to 2008 with only some minor modifications such as fuel injection for western imports. My dad had a 1987 one and in many ways it was a good car, paid £850 for it at four years old, and it lasted another 6. In a world when every new car including Kias is perfect, it is refreshing to know that there is still some truly awful cars being made outside of America!
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 00 1.8 Escort Van poor starting 28 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I had something similar on an old BMW years ago and eventually sorted it by putting a non-return valve on the fuel pipe, on the engine side of the filter, but on the Escort its harder to see where this should go. Any ideas much appreciated! Cheers
  • Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - 08 2.0 auto stays in low gears too long 11 Oct 2008 (Forum)
When you drive the car it stays in low gears for too long making a lot of noise and using too much fuel. We have taken it back to our local Renault dealer - {generalised -DD} and they say that nothing is wrong they say it is behaving as designed. We are only getting 20-25 mpg. The car is noisy and is stressful to drive.
