  • Help me choose my next car 4 Aug 2025 (Forum)
Budget up to £30K Happy to buy used with mileage up to 20K Half decent fuel economy (I know I will have to kiss goodbye the the Golf 8's amazing frugality). Have a good reputation for reliability. Musn't be a massive 'tank' (Input from spouse) I have been looking at the Volvo XC40 which seems like a good fit.
  • Honda CR-V - Advice needed regarding underbody rust treatment 26 Sep 2024 (Forum)
I would like make sure what elements should I mask on to avoid any problems with future MOT test caused by applied black stuff to the elements which shouldn’t be covered. I already masked brakes pipes, ABS sensor cables, calipers, brake discs, fuel pipes, exhaust. Can I apply the stuff to these elements: - all steel suspension elements - steel support brackets like from gas tank, hoses and pipes brackets - front and rear sub-frames - brake dust shields (from external side) - all nuts, hose brackets, Should I be very careful with specific elements and don’t cover them with anything.
  • Toyota MR2 - Vecta immobiliser 15 Jun 2023 (Forum)
We (my trusted local garage actually) have just completed a recommissioning, with all fluids changed, new plugs, HT leads, coil, distributor cap, etc. The fuel pump has also been replaced and tank flushed out. All was well until it has suddenly started cutting out and the engine stops slowly (in other words as though a fuelling problem rather than electrical).
  • Renault scenic 01 plate - Renault scenic 1.9 dti mass air flow sensor fail 19 Jul 2021 (Forum)
since then I have changed all glow plugs, removed and cleaned egr valve (which was stuck) and removed and cleaned the air flow sensor (was clean anyhow, used correct non contact spray etc) However, problem is still there, I read that the fault can clear if you pull the electrics from the maf, which I did, warning light still on. I think it is a lack of air/fuel consumption. Is my best bet to buy a new maf? I have heard this needs to be genuine part also? Or by pulling the electrics out and the fauls still occurring show that it’s not the maf? thanks in advance.
  • Ford Galaxy mk2 - Over Voltage problem 28 Nov 2020 (Forum)
They suggested replacing the battery which they did however less than 24 hours after they did this I get the same problems again. Recently the car has had a new clutch, new fuel injectors, new fan control module, and had the coolant system replaced on a Ford recall. I love the car it’s got low mileage but I can’t keep shelling out to keep it running. Does anyone have any idea ?

For some oil production it can actually be 3x as much as this! And this also doesn’t include the CO2 created by shipping the final fuel by lorry or the CO2 generated by operating the petrol station. Hence, you need to add this on to the official C02 figures for each car to get a fair comparison – which has the effect of making EVs even more attractive than you’re suggesting.
  • Car ownership trends after lockdown 27 Jun 2020 (Forum)
I am wondering what long term changes/trends are coming re car ownership following lockdown. Many vehicles have done little or no mileage in three months and apart from fuel savings, owners have still been exposed to the usual maintenance/tax/insurance/depreciation costs. Not to mention the dreaded monthly repayments if the car was not bought with cash. A complete waste of money staring car owners in the face With people working from home much more, budgeting for double or triple vehicle ownership makes absolutely no sense.
  • 2004 Honda Jazz CVT 1.4 - Glitch under load 7 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Owned from 6 months old. 100k miles. Has been stone reliable, except when a main dealership damaged the fuel pressure sensor on a major service. I do annual oil and filter changes etc. I renewed both banks of spark plugs two years ago (Back 4 looked like they had never been changed !). Runs well. Indicated average 45+MPG on short run normal use.
  • BMW X3 (G01) Xline 69 Plate 2 litre Diesel - Dashboard Dimming 21 Dec 2019 (Forum)
In bright sunlight the dash including Sat Nav is bright and clear travelling into shade the whole dash and Sat Nav gets dimmer and dimmer to such an extent that the Clock/OutsideTemp/Fuel Range cannot be read it virtually disappears, the car has been returned to the dealers twice with no success. What peeves me is that the dealer received an email from BMW Technical saying that they know of this problem and have no plans for a fix.
  • Renault Megane - Check injection fault 1.5 dci 20 Jun 2019 (Forum)
Hi, I have a Renault Mégane 1.5 dci 2007/57 The check injection keeps showing up, I have had the 4 injectors changed, changed all the glow plugs, changed the fuel filter and the air filter. The code was wiped. Happy that the problem was now sorted. I took my car, drove down the street.. and the check injection warning came back on. I have noticed that the engine sounds louder than before (the only way I can describe it is like a tractor) also when I put my foot on the accelerator the turbo seems to may a wooshing noise.
  • Any - To those who helped a biker yesterday near Beeston 20 Feb 2019 (Forum)
My riding gear did its job, just a broken little finger and scuffed/chafed knees to show for a 35mph-ish get-off.  The bike unfortunately stopped sliding by hitting the kerb, damaging the frame and fuel tank beyond repair. But while waiting for the recovery truck, I was humbled by the number of people who stopped and offered to help.  My thanks especially to Luke, in a white Peugeot van, who gave me some wipes and plasters from his first aid kit;  and to Steve in a silver Focus who first checked if I was OK, then 20 minutes later came back with a bottle of water and chocolate bar, completely unbidden.
  • Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV - Pence per KW reimbursement rates 6 Dec 2018 (Forum)
Hi All, I'm in the fortunate position of having a company car with a fuel card. I've recently had a chargemaster home installation for my Outlander PHEV. I'm currently in discussions with my employer to have the KW cost of recharging my company car via expenses. The ChargeVision dashboard provides a very clear dashboard of KW consumed for each charge.

  • U turn or round the block? 12 Aug 2018 (Forum)
I just think trying to do a three point turn in busy traffic is frankly asking for trouble - eg other traffic not realising what you’re doing or cyclists nipping along behind you or in front as you’re looking the other way. Are people just trying to save fuel or do they think it’s better than using a normal junction or side road? I just think it’s too risky. What do you do?
  • Ford Focus Estate / Fabia Estate / Peugeot 206SW - High miler turbo diesel estates? Or petrol? 30 Dec 2017 (Forum)
Is it better to go with a petrol, or a turbo diesel? I read lots of threads discussing problems with the latter. Never owned a diesel, the fuel economy appeals but I read a lot of threads discussing expensive issues with the turbo diesels, e.g. the Ford Focus Estate TDCI1.6 problems, concern me. Would it be better to go with the Focus in the 1.6 petrol unit?
  • Ford Focus Estate 2008 1.6tdci 109ps to 133ps - Converting from DMF to RIGID flywheel 8 May 2017 (Forum)
I want to know what could be the pros and cons of using this type of clutch asembley on long term use. I mean will it stress out the gearbox, does it have a impact on fuel consumption and will I lose torque or power (DMF working somehow as a torque converter as it offers a constant flux of energy to the gearbox) Car was recently remaped to 133ps  Thank you !
  • SEAT Altea - A few queries about my car 13 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Hi Peeps, I have recently bought a SEAT Altea 1.6 Sport Reference (Petrol) privately after having my polo 1.2 reduced to a cube due to an incompentent driver. Just a few queries if people can give me some tips / advice. 1. SEAT Altea and Fuel - Is it me or does this car drink? I feel like I am filling up every 2 weeks £45.00 a pop for a full tank.  2. When on A roads or Motorways, going up to the National Speed Limit of 70mph, between 60 and 70 mph the SEAT starts to vibrate, but not the steering wheel it is more in the seats, and I am pretty sure they do not have a massage function.
  • VW and others - Euro Ncap Safety Cheating 4 Aug 2016 (Forum)
VW were criticised for failing to NCAP test the latest Polo. Jeep for allowing a model to continue to be sold wih a fuel tank exposed to rear end shunts. But above all the failure of euro ncap to simulate what happens in real accidents where drivers attempt to avoid collisions and end up hitting just one side of the car.
  • BMW E46 316TI - Car Hesitation Issue 11 Jun 2016 (Forum)
Hi All, First time posting here so hi! I have a BMW 316TI 2003 which has a hesitation issue. I have just had plugs, fuel & air filter & oil cange done which has helped slightly. The car bogs down & hesitates under 2000RPM. It has been on a diganostic machine at my local garage and came up with "VVT Sensor, Knock sensor and Lambda sensor rear cat bank 1 aging".
  • Dream car? 4 Jan 2016 (Forum)
There are faster cars out there, but it would be a waste for what I do. If I got a 'better' car it would: use more fuel cost more to insure and service take longer to wash due to its size be harder to get in and out of (in car parks) due to its size have more things to go wrong My car's a Citroen C1 (1.0) and I think I'll stick with it.
