Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV - Pence per KW reimbursement rates - Iain Cottingham

Hi All,

I'm in the fortunate position of having a company car with a fuel card. I've recently had a chargemaster home installation for my Outlander PHEV.

I'm currently in discussions with my employer to have the KW cost of recharging my company car via expenses. The ChargeVision dashboard provides a very clear dashboard of KW consumed for each charge. From my analysing my electricity bill i've calculated the current cost charged by my electricity provider to be 14.4p per KW.

I've spoken to both HMRC and a Mitsubishi dealership and neither has any guidance on the recharge rate per KW. I had the impression from both phone calls that this is the first time this type of question has been asked, which i find somewhat surprising.

So is anyone else having the cost of recharging their company vehicle reimbursed by their company, if so what rate per KW?

Many thanks.

Iain

Your electricity supplier will provide exact details of your tariff, in terms of daily standing charge and actual cost per kwh.

Provided it doesn't contravene any HMRC rules, it's a matter of negotiation between you and your employer.

That maybe explains the reason behind the recent news story.

Company PHEVs never being plugged in. Just being run on petrol.

Good luck with your quest to run a greener car.

Why does absolutely nothing in that statement surprise me?

Some of them would struggle to answer to their own name, (particularly in the dealership).

I'd suggest putting the question to HMRC in writing and specifying your scenario.

One would expect reimbursement to be on same basis as liquid fuel ie at same price per Kw/h as your supplier sells electricity. Including apportioned standing charge would be pushing your luck.

Let us know how you get on.

My previous company gave me a Mitsubishi Outlander phev as a company car.
All the petrol for the car was on a company provided fuel card, we paid for our private mileage at 15p per mile.
The company paid us £62.50 into our salaries monthly, taxable, to reimburse us for charging the cars at home, I think higher rate taxpayers were paid £85 per month for charging the cars at home.

In my experience, the Outlander as a repmobile is far from a green car, when I didn't plug it in, I averaged 30 mpg.
I have changed jobs and now drive a Hyundai Ioniq plug in hybrid. The home charging plug for the outlander will not fit the Ioniq but that's another story. When I didn't plug the Ioniq in, it averaged just over 60mpg, I plug it in on average once a week on the free of charge pod point network where the charging points are located in supermarket car parks, this gives me about 65mpg.

The problem is that plug in hybrids are intended for charging at hone, a 10 mile journey to work, charging at work, a 10 mile journey home etc.
They are not really intended as mile munching rep mobiles but government tax policy has made it very attractive for company car drivers to drive plug in hybrids.
When I test drove the Ioniq plug in hybrid, another man was test driving the Ioniq hybrid (non plug in), I asked him why he didn't choose the plug in and he replied that the extra purchase price for the plug in would not be recouped. Says it all doesn't it?

I have a 225xs company car, but I pay for my own fuel. As a full charge costs 65 pence on our electricity tariff, I don't think it's worth claiming for charging costs. 65p equates to roughly half a litre of petrol.

As soon as you do any journey that's greater than the electric range of the car, the electricity cost is dwarfed by the petrol cost anyway.

Herein lies the problem.
The Mitsubishi Outlander is a popular company car and the absence of replies from company car drivers about how their home electricity is reimbursed looks like the drivers of company phev do not plug them in at home and are not reimbursed.
As I said in my previous post, my last company had a scheme for reimbursing employees via a monthly salary payment.
One method may be calculate the cost of a charge from the smart meter or from your tariff not forgetting to factor in any standing charge.
I remember on the Mitsubishi website, there was a cost of charge calculator where you put your unit cost in the calculation and it worked out the cost of a home charge.

I don't think that's the case. I believe most people don't bother claiming because the amounts are tiny, and not worth the bother.

As mentioned above, a full charge on my BMW is 65 pence. On an average commute (7 mile round trip) I will use max 50% of the battery's capacity, i.e. 32.5 pence per day, or 1.63 per week. Doesn't even buy a single espresso in Costa.

Even if I was using the full capacity of the battery every day of the working week, that's £3.26 per week. Again, just not worth it.

I should point out that I am Yorkshire born and bred, too.

Unsurprisingly since I recharge my hybrid car I've experienced a significant reduction in the fuel cost, approximately a net benefit £20pw! I would imagine the majority of this saving is lost tax revenue to the Treasury, I wonder if they have a plan to recover this lost tax revenue when we are all driving electric?

My employer has agreed to reimburse the cost of recharging (KW x rate charged by my electricity provider), the recharge cable and I'm negotiating whether they should pay the net cost of the installation £200 after the £500 government grant.

Interestingly I phoned HMRC to ask whether the £200 installation cost would be a BiK. Their response was, it is up to your company to decide if it is a BiK, we have NO POLICY!!
