  • Golf brake failure 27 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Got an anguished call last Sunday night from my wife who had stopped the company Mk4 Golf in a pub car park 40 miles from home because a red light with an exclamation mark was blinking at her from the dash and chiming while it flashed. It was the car telling her that the brake fluid was low. This is obviously the car's revenge for us talking previously about a sporty coupe while it was listening!
  • BMW 420i X-drive - Advice on options at the end of a business lease 13 Mar 2023 (Forum)
It has been almost faultless, with none of the issues that annoyed me so much with the M4. In fact, it is a very popular car amongst us. Now, the preferred option was for an unrelated person to buy the car at the end of the lease and return it back to the business. But the purchase price asked by BCA is actaully higher than I expected, I would be able to buy an equivalent car from a main dealer for less (with the benefit of a warranty).
  • V5C showing keeper as me 'c/o another company' 18 Sep 2018 (Forum)
So I'm in the market to get a new car, and amongst the many brokers etc online I've found a very good price. I've done a fair bit of research and am aware of the V5C 'retention' that is used by brokers/dealers to get the big discount.
  • Volvo V70/XC70 (2000 - 2007) - Sanity check 22 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Huge, comfortable and something I've always quite liked after my dad's 760GLE way back in the day. I've read what I can on the interwebs about the car and it seems pretty solid (CBC checked too). The car I'm interested in is at a local independent which comes with a 90 full warranty that I can upgrade to two years RAC warranty - am tempted to do this, have got policy to read detail.
  • Ford KA, KA2, KA3 (1996 - 2008) - Rust at 3.75 years ? 12 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Are there any useful ( polite ) phrases I should use ? I know it "only" cost us £5k but it strikes me that this is a bit early to see this sort of problem ?
  • Peugeot 307 - Faulty car and court! 30 Mar 2016 (Forum)
It also had 3 months warranty. When we picked up the car we were told he would send us the service history as it had been misplaced.
  • Advice on buying a cheap used family car? 17 Feb 2020 (Forum)
    4) Ford at almost 10 years old will need Timing belt replacement, which I will budget for, but does that mean the Mercedes will be cheaper to run as a result as I presume all other maintenance will be same thing on both vehicles? (Tyres, service, clutch etc) 5) For any car I will want to get some kind of warranty, and family members have used the AA breakdown+garage warranty in the past (35 excess, repairs up to £500 covered) and it's in the 200-250 range for a year.
  • Land Rover Discovery Sport - New engine fitted, after a day engine light is on 24 Jan 2024 (Forum)
My husband drives the car there to have it checked, after a lot of back and forth over days they finally check the car and inform us that the timing chains need replacing, they are not completely happy with the compression in the engine so we would likely have to change that too with the turbo charger resulting in a £9300 cost as we are no longer in warranty.
  • honda frv - air con fault 3 months after purchase 28 Jul 2018 (Forum)
im trying to find out what my rights are under the consumer rights act 2015. ill try and bullet point rather than a huge storey. bought the car in march (snow on the ground then) everything was fine. I commented at the time i couldnt test the aircon because it was so cold independednt inspection dated 6 months previous says aircon was working (not including gassing) weather warms up and i start using the aircon. notice there was a whiring sound when its turned on and revs drop suggesting compressor kicks in. within a week or so this stops so i take it to dealer for regassing that lasted a couple of weeks so take it for diagnosing. condenser and receiever pipe is corroded the car has a 15 month warranty but not covering corrosion used car dealer says 'his legal team' this is classed as service parts so they are not liable.
  • BMW 3 Series Coupe - Getting specialist to check over car before I buy 27 Aug 2011 (Forum)
I've found a 2008 105k mileage in exactly the model/colour that I like and at a good price. It comes with a full service history and seems in good condition. It looks like the car has just done a lot of motorway miles. It is no longer under BMW warranty. The dealer is just a man with a yard selling cars. There's no garage attached to the business and he doesn't offer a warranty with the car.
  • N/A - overheating discs 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
I believe that most drivers are inclined to sit on the brakes so why is the problem not  widespread? HJ advises to use the cars hand brake or hold system as the rear brakes do not heat up as much as the fronts.  However the owner has also had the rears replaced under warranty! As the car is obviously a performance car surely the brakes should be up to the job and not be giving the owner grief.
  • Cheap Car Vs New Lease 22 Jun 2016 (Forum)
Hi, my friend reckons its cheaper to lease a new Dacia Logan 1.2 petrol mid spec for 4 years than to buy a 9 year old astra or focus petrol estate. His argument is while the deposit on the Logan is £1174, the cost of a decent used Focus/Astra estate is similar if not more (£1200-£1700) Unlike the Focus/Astra, the Logan comes with a free extended 5 year warranty, so other than running costs, shouldnt cost a penny more.
  • Ford C Max 1.8 TDCI - Turbocharger failure 9 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Our C max is a 58 reg and had done just under 24000 miles when the turbocharger failed. The car was out of warranty so we had to pay the £1300 + for repairs. We have contacted Ford and asked why this should have failed and the cause of the failure on a car with such low millage and and not very old.
  • Unreliable cars - why? 16 Mar 2007 (Forum)
This isn't intended to start an anything bashing thread but why is it that some car companies seem to have such great problems producing vehicles which are reliable? There are any number of basically good innovative cars out there which are badly let down by cheap trim and dodgy components.
  • C5 HDI - Turbo pressure too high! 11 Mar 2006 (Forum)
There has been a whining noise on over-run, best heard when stationary with the bonnet open, the noise has existed for a year and was queried twice while in warranty. The dealer has not yet asked Citroen about a goodwill payment (5 1/2 months out of warranty). If a turbo is producing too high a pressure, what is the outcome of long term use? Would a rubber hose pop off before the engine self destructs?
  • Jaguar XKR-S (2008 - ) - Warranty problem after service confusion. 11 Aug 2009 (Forum)
m pretty much okay there. Am I right in thinking that once a service is carried out then the warranty will always start again. I think, and correct me if I?m wrong, but the warranty wouldn?t have been available had the car blown up in the time leading up to the service. So within the first 24k miles.
  • Fiesta 1.25 Zetec oil pressure.... 17 Apr 2001 (Forum)
Worth knowing about since on this factory fitted alarm it is impossible to lock car using key with central locking without setting alarm. I was not popular with neighbours particularly since I was away.. Haynes manual has no info on alarm wiring!
  • 2013 (13 Plate) Nissan Qashqai+2 (J10E) Petrol CVT - Nissan Qashqai+2 Piston slap after < 20,000 mil 1 Dec 2017 (Forum)
Services The service & warranty book says the vehicle had 3 year / 60K miles warranty (whichever is sooner) i.e. to 28/05/2017 / 60,000 miles. [provided the car is maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommended service schedule].
  • Ford Focus 1.6 Powershift - Powershift Outstanding Field Service Action 25 Oct 2018 (Forum)
I was briefly told about the Powershift transmission, I mean they didn't mention the issues with it of course but afterwards I have seen that there are wide spread issues with this transmission. I am used to driving an automatic but I cannot say I notice any difference when driving the car but I put my registration into the Ford recall website and it said the following.  Outstanding Field Service Actions  14M02 - TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE  I believe this is just an extended warranty on the transmission but regardless, I am pretty worried about the car now.
  • Toyota Picnic value 15 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Windscreen has a few chips out of it, and there are a few stone chips on the body. It still runs well and has had one fault with the remote locking fixed under warranty. Leaseplan gave me a figure of £9,800 and said that include an early return penalty so it would be a bit cheaper. What Car used price guide suggests it would be £1500 - £2000 less than that because of the mileage.
