216 cutting out 25 Apr 2002 (Forum)
I only had about 15 minutes on it yesterday, and established by putting our timing lamp on the HT leads, it is losing sparks, but of course it could be losing fuel too if the main relay is dicky. We have not got a Rover pod for our scanner, and whilst my first thoughts are either ignition amplifier or relay, if anyone (Andrew?) can point me in the right direction to save time I would be very grateful. -
Diesels in the US 14 Mar 2002 (Forum)
(except in California where they don't want to know apparently). Why does Europe have such a high proportion of diesels? Is it all to do with fuel costs do you think? (A conference note: The (ex-Jaguar MD) new top Ford guy Nick Scheele was an excellent speaker and comes across as very credible. He certainly wowed the audience. Doubt he's so popular in Dagenham) One questioner asked if it was the smell of diesel at the pumps (where available) that could be putting the US consumer off. -
Audi 80 stopped! 11 Mar 2002 (Forum)
The engine turns over beautifully and (paranoia in charge) I even prised over the cam belt cover and *yes!* it's still there! Fuel seems to be there (singed hair). This car has a distributor on cam 1 and a rotor arm, from a mini coil (I've never seen one so small - perhaps they should contact family planning). I'll have to go out in the morning and fix it roadsides.... -
Peugeot 406 2.1 TD, engine cutting out. 28 Feb 2002 (Forum)
The problem is I am due to go to Spain on Sunday 3 April, towing a caravan, for six weeks and I am worried about what may happen. My garage suggested a new fuel filter and this has been done, even though accordind toinvoices the filter had only been in use since 37,000. Has anyone any suggestions, please? -
Audi 80 lumpy idling 19 Feb 2002 (Forum)
A few points to note: I ran out of petrol a couple of weeks ago. I changed the disposable in line fuel filter. The timing is correct. The rotor arm and distribtor cap are new. What shall I do? Clean the idle jet with something? Any ideas gratefully received. Steve -
Ventilation problems - MONDEO 9 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I've been noticing for a while that when ever I switch on the cabin fan in my diesel mondeo (95N LX TD) the smell of unburnt/burnt diesel fumes enters the cabin. I've checked the engine bay for any obvious fuel leaks with the engine running, couldn't find any obvious leaks. I was also told at a recent MOT that the front exhaust downpipe was leaking (not a failure point) so I had it changed even though the mechanic who replaced it said there wasn't anything wrong with it. -
MB reliability 28 Jan 2002 (Forum)
MB rescue came out (within 35 mins). Ah yes the mechanic said, we have had a few of these - some fuel pipe was coming lose on a number of new C classes. It took the mechanic an hour and a half to fix - stripping down a part of the car to get to the fiddly pipe. Is is my imagination or is it always a Jap car when people say "I had this [ ] car for 10 years I loved it it was totally reliable it never broke down etc"? -
Alfa 166 3.0 Auto 15 Jan 2002 (Forum)
It can be overcome by driving it around in tiptronic mode which keeps the car in third to well above 60kms per hour, however it tends to burn fuel and keeps the speed cameras happy. Any comments or suggestions would be gratefully received. Alan Boys Perth Western Australia -
Xantia - Purchase in mind 16 Oct 2001 (Forum)
I want to get a TDi, as the main reason for buying another car would be to make substantial savings on fuel which would hopefully pay for the car in a year. (I commute 70 miles a day round trip). So - which spec should I look to buy? Is it worth spending the extra on an estate? What is the best time of year to get one, I would like it now, but can wait until the new year. -
New Shell Petrol 28 Aug 2001 (Forum)
One of the main claims was that it would help you accelerate out of danger faster in "a typical family car". It also keeps your engine cleaner and reduces fuel consumption. It sounds like some of the wild claims made in the past for petrol additives / economy devices, surely they can back up some of these claims? Of course it's about the same price that Super Unleaded was but as it claims to cure most ills they obviously think we will buy enough of it Robin -
range rover lack of popwer 30 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Could the valve timing be so far out to reduce compression to 60 psi and yet car still start and run okay. fuel economy is 15mpg on lpg which is about right. runs runs equally well on petrol or gas Your comments would be appreciated David -
Citroen Xantia 1.9 TD (Bosch pump) - Simple glow plug change gone wrong! Wont idle now! 11 Feb 2014 (Forum)
When I returned we fitted the last plug, the wiring for the plugs and all the extras removed for access - including that fiddly fast-idle lever on the back of the pump. I used the 'grenade' in the corner of the engine bay to prime the fuel system and tried to start it. It didn't sound quite right and never jumped into life. I then tried disconnecting the fuel return union on the side of the pump, inserting the key in the ignition and turning it to activate the stop solenoid (but not crank it over) and manually primed the system with the grenade again. -
Porsche Cayenne e-Hybrid - Porsche Hybrid 9 Feb 2021 (Forum)
They agreed to have a look at the car and later that day told me that the oil level was too high because fuel had entered the oil because of the way I had been driving the car on short journeys, not using the engine enough and not therefore not getting the oil up to a temperature high enough to eliminate the fuel from the oil. -
MG 6 - Honda Civic - Honda Civic vs MG 6 - better value used car? 31 Oct 2017 (Forum)
However I don't see any rust issues reported online, except for some related to wiring and earthing points. 5) Poor fuel economy when compared to more modern cars. But similar to a mark 2 focus, with around 35 mpg. 6) 5 gear as opposed to 6 speed gear box. Hence reduced fuel efficiency So on balance, is this car a good buy? -
My new Tesla Model 3 11 Feb 2023 (Forum)
I chose a full electric car for a few reasons; firstly the very low current BIK, secondly saving money on fuel, thirdly I fancied something different. Tesla don't have the best reputation when it comes to build quality. There was one issue with mine on delivery - a slight misalignment of the bootlid when closed. -
Honda CR-V CDTi - Crank, No Start 25 Jun 2020 (Forum)
I was hoping someone might know more about the electronics surrounding the ignition system. my current suspicion is the main relay, but I’m just guessing. the culprit seems to be not switching on All the PGM-FI, glow plugs, Fuel Filter, ABS lights, etc. Which are all part of the initial pre ignition checks. It’s not just one light that’s causing a no start, it’s all of them, so I’m currently ruling out things like a battery, fuel pump etc. the issue seems to be more of a “core” component. -
Ford Focus Zetec - ECU failure not covered by warranty 21 Mar 2018 (Forum)
At the beginning of February 2018, the car again showed signs of rough running and was taken to Liss Garage Services. Stewart checked the wiring to the fuel injectors, which was fine and so he suggested having the ECU tested and if necessary replaced. This was done at a cost of £760.20. My son finally sold the car at the end of February for £5,600. -
DPF Filters - Just how bad are they? 14 Feb 2017 (Forum)
This has obviously reduced my options by quite a lot and I'm now going to have to pay the price in fuel costs. I was just wondering whether I'm being too paranoid about having a 4WD with a DPF or are they actually as bad as they appear to be? My annual mileage will be around 11K and a good 90% of it will be short trips of maybe 20 miles or so. -
Chevrolet Epica - Chevrolet Epica diesel 1 year on 12 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Aug 2010, searching for a fairly economical to buy new-newish car, looked at brand new kia ceed, then saw hyundai i30 classics a lot cheaper and went to look at a car supermarket (Ron Skinners) where i had previously bought a chevrolet aveo for an old friend. saw the epica in stock, all ex-chevrolet cars in lovely condition and a very attractive price. went home and researched a bit, and found my car for £6745 at Pentagon, Sheffield, 7021 miles on clock when i bought car over the phone, bit disappointed at the time about the condition the car was delivered in, but faults fixed under warranty and dealer service in swansea (FRF) excellent. (PS, Pentagon, you ARE forgiven) Fuel economy has averaged around 40mpg (big heavy car) and better than 45mpg motorways to london, which we do once a month. 2nd year service cost at vauxhall network Q here in carmarthen extremely well carried out, and cost just £99 inc vat + parts +oil total was about £217 oil. air and fuel filters all changed, and brake fluid changed too. car left spotlessly clean too! -
ford focus - Particles, Catalitic converters, DPF's, Diesel??? 9 Jul 2011 (Forum)
If manufacturers are so comitted to low emissions how is it that I cannot buy a Ford Focus without air con ( uses 8% more fuel) and told by most enonomy drivers to turn off and it adds £500 to car. I have managed since 03 with a non air con fiesta if I get hot I open the window. The DPF's have an effect on fuel consumption so does Catalytic converters.
